“Você acha que é o único super-herói no mundo?” Esta fala emitida por Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) foi responsável por transformar o filme “Homem de Ferro”, de 2008, para além de um filme solo de super-herói. Como é de conhecimento geral, o longa é o ponto de partida do Universo Cinematográfico da Marvel, que já lançou 32 filmes e nove séries de televisão até o momento. O personagem de Jackson fará seu retorno em duas obras do estúdio previstas para este ano: a minissérie “Invasão Secreta”, que teve seu primeiro episódio lançado na última quarta-feira (21) no Disney+, e o filme “As Marvels”, que irá estrear nos cinemas em novembro.

A fala de Fury também acaba sendo significativa de um modo simbólico, já que 2008 foi palco de várias outras obras envolvendo super-heróis, entre elas “Batman: O Cavaleiro das Trevas” e a série animada “O Espetacular Homem-Aranha”. Porém, “Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog” (O Blog Musical do Dr. Horrível, em tradução livre), musical dividido em três partes feito para a Internet disponível inteiramente no YouTube, também merece um lugar ao sol neste ano repleto de heroísmo, graças à praticidade do projeto, ao roteiro inteligente, ao compromisso do elenco e à criatividade das canções.

( “You think you're the only superhero in the world?” This line spoken by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) was responsible for transforming the 2008 film “Iron Man”, beyond from being a solo superhero film. As it's common knowledge, the feature is the starting point of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which already released 32 feature films and nine television series to date. Jackson's character will make his return in two works by the studio which are slated to release this year: the limited series “Secret Invasion”, which had its first episode released last Wednesday (21^st) on Disney+, and the film “The Marvels”, which will premiere in theaters this November.

Fury's line also ends up being significant in a symbolic way, as 2008 was a stage for several other works of fiction involving superheros, with “The Dark Knight” and the animated series “The Spectacular Spider-Man” amongst them. However, “Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog”, a three-part musical made for the Internet which is entirely available on YouTube, also deserves a place in the sun in this year filled with heroism, thanks to the project's practical approach, to its clever writing, to the cast's commitment, and to the creativity of its songs.)

História

Dirigido por Joss Whedon (que, 4 anos depois, faria sua primeira contribuição para a Marvel com “Os Vingadores”), “Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog” conta a história de Billy, um tímido aspirante a super-vilão que é apaixonado por Penny, uma ativista de causas sociais que deseja encontrar um abrigo para os sem-teto da cidade. Como o auto-intitulado Dr. Horrível (que, de acordo com um mesmo, “tem um PhD em horribilidade”), Billy frequentemente documenta suas tentativas falhas de façanhas em um blog na internet. Durante um destes atos de vilania, ele acidentalmente apresenta o amor de sua vida para seu arqui-inimigo, o herói Capitão Martelo. A partir daí, uma série de circunstâncias força Billy a descobrir quem ele realmente deseja ser.

Directed by Joss Whedon (who, four years later, would make his first contribution to Marvel with 2012's “The Avengers”), “Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog” tells the story of Billy, a shy aspiring supervillain who is in love with Penny, a social activist who wishes to find a shelter for the city's homeless people. As the self-intitled Dr. Horrible (who, according to himself, “has a PhD in horribleness”), Billy frequently documents his failed attempts at villainous feats in an internet blog. During one of these acts of villainy, he accidentally introduces the love of his life to his arch-nemesis, the hero Captain Hammer. From that point, a series of circumstances forces Billy to find out who he really wants to be.)

Antes de falar sobre o porquê de “Dr. Horrible” ainda funcionar 15 anos depois, vale a pena discorrer um pouco sobre o contexto no qual ele foi produzido, que acaba criando uma conexão surpreendente com os dias de hoje. O projeto foi financiado com dinheiro do próprio bolso de Whedon (um orçamento baixíssimo de US$200 mil), e executado durante a greve do Sindicato dos Roteiristas dos EUA de 2007 e 2008, a mesma associação responsável pela greve que está ocorrendo atualmente. Assim como na deste ano, a greve de 2007-2008 afetou várias produções no meio audiovisual. Então, o desejo do diretor era criar uma coisa pequena e prática, feita de modo profissional, de maneira que pudesse contornar os problemas que eram alvos de protesto pelo sindicato.

Before talking about why “Dr. Horrible” still works 15 years later, it's worth discussing a little about the context in which it was produced, which ends up creating a surprising connection with our present day. The project was funded with money from Whedon's own pocket (a very low budget of US$200,000), and executed during the 2007-2008 Writers Guild of America strike, the same association responsible for the strike that's ongoing nowadays. Just like the one this year, the 2007-2008 strike affected several productions in the audiovisual medium. So, the director's wish was to create something small and practical, done professionally, in a way it could circumvent the issues that were being protested by the union.)

Roteiro

O roteiro ainda funciona 15 anos depois porque, ao mesmo tempo em que lida com a dupla personalidade de Billy, Whedon subverte os padrões recorrentes no gênero na época do lançamento; uma subversão que, agora, virou o padrão. O personagem-título é visto mais como um anti-herói do que propriamente um vilão, de modo que o espectador toma simpatia por ele, não muito diferente do que acontece com “Coringa”, de 2019, onde a versão do antagonista interpretado por Joaquin Phoenix passa por várias dificuldades e preconceitos, persuadindo quem vê a “ficar do lado dele”. O antagonista de “Dr. Horrible”, um super-herói, é dominado pela arrogância, expondo uma corruptibilidade no heroísmo que só teria um maior destaque em séries como “The Boys”, da Prime Video. Além disso, o diretor faz um equilíbrio perfeito entre comédia e drama ao longo da duração sucinta de 50 minutos, começando como algo leve e descontraído e lentamente desenvolvendo um caráter mais sério no desenrolar da trama, culminando em um final chocante repleto de simbolismo.

The writing still works 15 years later because, at the same time it deals with Billy's double personality, Whedon subverts the recurring patterns in the genre at the time of its release; a subversion that, now, became the standard. The title character is seen more like an anti-hero than properly a villain, in a way the viewer has some sympathy for him, not much different than what happened with 2019's “Joker”, where the antagonist's version portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix goes through several difficulties and prejudices, persuading those who watch to “take his side”. The antagonist of “Dr. Horrible”, a superhero, is dominated by arrogance, exposing a corruptibility to heroism that would only have a bigger stage to be explored on shows like Prime Video's “The Boys”. Besides, the director makes a perfect balance between comedy and drama throughout its succint 50-minute runtime, starting off as something light and funny and slowly developing a more serious tone as the plot unfolds, culminating in a shocking conclusion filled with symbolism.)

Mas o talento não fica somente atrás da câmera. O personagem-título é interpretado por ninguém menos que Neil Patrick Harris ('How I Met Your Mother'), que, além de conseguir equilibrar as duas personalidades de Billy muito bem, utiliza seus talentos de ator no teatro musical completamente a seu favor. Seu interesse amoroso é interpretado pela talentosa Felicia Day ('Supernatural'), que ganhou sua fama na internet através da criação da websérie “The Guild” (que também está inteiramente disponível no YouTube), e traz uma doçura e inocência necessários para a personagem, enquanto seu desenvolvimento vai a humanizando cada vez mais. But the talent doesn't stay only behind the camera. The title character is portrayed by none other than Neil Patrick Harris ('How I Met Your Mother'), who, besides managing to balance Billy's two personalities really well, uses his talents as a musical theater actor entirely to his own advantage. His love interest is played by the talented Felicia Day ('Supernatural'), who won her Internet fame through the creation of the webseries “The Guild” (which is also entirely available on YouTube), and brings a sweetness and innocence that are necessary to the character, while her development humanizes her more and more. The superhero Captain Hammer, the plot's antagonist, is played by Nathan Fillion ('Castle'), who's responsible for some of the script's best dialogue, and what is probably the work's best musical number. The trio carries Whedon's project on their back, thanks to each actor's onscreen charisma and the appeal they already had with the audience before “Dr. Horrible” was released.)

Na cerimônia inaugural dos Streamy Awards, destinados a obras feitas exclusivamente para a Internet, “Dr. Horrible” foi a obra mais premiada, vencendo em 7 categorias, incluindo o Prêmio do Público de Melhor Websérie. (Aftermath

“Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog” was an absolute success, winning several awards and being included in a list by Time magazine with the 50 best inventions of 2008. Whedon's work won the Emmy for Outstanding Special Class – Short-format Live-Action Entertainment Programs, the Hugo Award (for works in sci-fi and fantasy) for Best Dramatic Presentation – Short Form and the People's Choice Award for Favorite Online Sensation in 2009. In the inaugural ceremony of the Streamy Awards, destined to works exclusively made for the Internet, “Dr. Horrible” won the largest amount of awards, winning in 7 categories, including the Audience Award for Best Web Series. Just like all of Whedon's previous work, such as the shows “Buffy: The Vampire Slayer” and “Firefly”, the musical became a contemporary cult classic.

In the DVD release in 2008, Whedon got the cast together again to make an audio commentary to be heard alongside the film itself. His endeavor resulted in “Commentary! The Musical”, a brand-new musical that complements the original work, at the same time it offers a creative point-of-view on the production of “Dr. Horrible”. Besides that, five comic books released by Dark Horse Comics expanded its universe ans characters, with one of them being written by the director himself, titled “Dr. Horrible: Best Friends Forever”. At last, Whedon temporarily licensed the musical to be executed in a play format by amateur and student theatre companies, with equally creative results, which are also available on YouTube.)
