cinéfilos! Estou de volta, dessa vez com a resenha do primeiro filme
com atores de carne e osso de uma franquia primordialmente animada.
Felizmente, não é cartunesco como é nos quadrinhos, no lugar,
recebemos uma história realista, tocante, e muito, muito
emocionante. Pois bem, vamos falar sobre “Turma da Mônica –
Laços”. Vamos lá!
(What's up, film buffs!
I'm back, this time, with the review of something less known if
you're not from Brazil. You see, when the United States had DC and
Marvel, we, in Brazil, had a group of characters known as Monica's
Gang (Turma da Mônica in Portuguese), which is a group of children
who recurringly go on adventures together. They fight, struggle, and
split up, sometimes, but always end up making amends by the end of
the comic book, and that just feels like a very warm hug, a hug that
travels through several generations of Brazilian comic book readers.
Now, a live-action movie based on those characters just premiered
here in Brazil, and even though people from other countries may feel
somewhat confused, it's something really important for me, so I
thought I should translate this review as well. Without further ado,
let's talk about “Turma da Mônica – Laços” (Monica's Gang –
Bonds). Let's go!)
Baseado na graphic
novel de mesmo nome escrita por
Vitor e Lu Cafaggi, o filme segue Mônica (Giulia Benite), Cebolinha
(Kevin Vechiatto), Magali (Laura Rauseo), e Cascão (Gabriel Moreira)
em busca de Floquinho, o cachorro de Cebolinha.
(Based
on the graphic novel of the same name written by Vitor and Lu
Cafaggi, the film follows Monica (Giulia Benite), a bucktoothed,
sweet girl who gets very angry when people criticize her weight,
height or facial features; Jimmy Five (Cebolinha in Portuguese,
played by Kevin Vechiatto), a boy who has speaking issues and has 5
characteristic tufts of hair; Maggy (Magali in Portuguese, played by
Laura Rauseo), a girl who is always very hungry; and Smudge (Cascão
in Portuguese, played by Gabriel Moreira), a boy who is terrified of
water, in the search for Fluffy (Floquinho in Portuguese), Jimmy
Five's dog.)
Assim
como todos os brasileiros, eu mesmo fiquei me perguntando se um
live-action da Turma da Mônica daria certo. Os quadrinhos eram muito
cartunescos para agradar os fãs mais velhos. Mas quando soube que o
filme seria baseado não nas historinhas normais da Turma, mas sim em
uma graphic novel com um ponto de vista completamente diferente, aí
coloquei mais fé e expectativa no projeto. Para preparação, li a
HQ “Laços” 3 vezes, do anúncio do filme para a estreia, e revi
todos os filmes da Turma que eu tinha, de todos os Cine Gibis até o
fantástico “Uma Aventura no Tempo”. Me acomodei à estrutura e
fui ao cinema, com as expectativas à mil. E fico muito, muito feliz
em dizer que “Turma da Mônica – Laços” é o melhor filme
brasileiro que eu já vi nos últimos tempos. Claro, ainda assim, é
um filme da Turma da Mônica, tem uma estrutura mais de filme
infantil mesmo, mas aqueles que cresceram com esses personagens, como
eu, vão se emocionar (e muito) com esse filme. Quanto à história,
não há nada de novo aos padrões da Turma da Mônica. Como é um
filme feito para, além de causar nostalgia aos fãs veteranos,
agradar um público mais novo, é uma história previsível. Mas,
como eu já tinha me preparado antes, eu só aproveitei. E que
jornada maravilhosa! Há momentos tocantes, momentos emocionantes,
momentos fofos, e um momento em especial que me impressionou
bastante, mas sem spoilers aqui. É um filme feito para as crianças?
Sim. Mas há momentos e easter-eggs durante esse filme que só
aqueles que possuem um olho de Capitão América vão perceber.
Alguns são rápidos, outros são prolongados, então dá pra
perceber mais. O roteiro mantém uma parcial fidelidade com a HQ que
o inspirou; alguns momentos são literalmente transferidos do
material fonte para a tela, e algumas partes são modificadas, mas
são boas modificações, e elas colaboram bastante para o progresso
da história.
Resumindo,
o roteiro de “Turma da Mônica – Laços” não oferece nada de
novo, mas é o suficiente para agradar vários nichos de seu
público-alvo, incluindo os mais velhos.
(Just
like every Brazilian, I kept asking myself if a live-action Monica's
Gang movie would actually work. The comics were too cartoonish to
please older fans. But, when I learned that the film would not be
based on the original comics, but on a graphic novel with a
completely different point of view, I put a lot more of faith and
expectation on the project. Preparing myself for it, I read the
graphic novel “Laços” 3 times, from the announcement of the film
to the premiere, and rewatched every one of the Gang's movies I
owned, from all the Cine Gibis (a collection of animated stories from
the Gang) to the fantastic “Uma Aventura no Tempo” (An Adventure
through Time, a movie where the Gang travels through time to recover
crucial elements in order to fix time itself). I settled to the
structure, and went to the movies, with my expectations up in the
sky. And I am so, so glad to say that “Turma da Mônica – Laços”
is the best Brazilian movie I've seen in recent times. Sure, still,
it's a Monica's Gang movie, it has a more childish movie structure,
but those who grew up with these characters, like myself, will get
(very) emotional watching this movie. As to the story, there is
nothing new, in the Gang's standards. As it's a movie that, along
with triggering a sense of nostalgia in its older viewers, is
directed towards a younger audience, it's a predictable story. But,
as I was already prepared for it, I just enjoyed it. And what a
wonderful journey! There are touching, emotional, sweet moments in
it, along with one specific moment I was not expecting, and I got
pretty impressed with it, but no spoilers here. Is it a movie made
for children? Yes. But there are moments and easter-eggs inside this
film that only those who have a true Captain America eye will notice
and enjoy. Some of them are quick, some are longer, so they are
pretty noticeable. The script maintains a partial fidelity to the
graphic novel that inspired it, some moments are literally transfered
from book to screen, and some parts are modified, but they are good
modifications, and they help with the story's progression.
In
a nutshell, the script for “Turma da Mônica – Laços” doesn't
offer anything new, but it is enough to please several groups of its
target audience, including the older ones.)
Agora,
vamos à parte que quase todo mundo reclamou quando os primeiros
visuais do filme saíram: o elenco. Surgiram reclamações como “Ah,
o Cebolinha não tem só 5 fios de cabelo”, “o Cascão não é
visivelmente sujo”, e “a Mônica, a Magali e o Cascão estão
usando sapato”. Claramente, essas pessoas não sabiam a intenção
do diretor, Daniel Rezende, que, além de ser montador dos clássicos
modernos “Cidade de Deus” e os dois “Tropa de Elite”, também
dirigiu o excelente “Bingo: O Rei das Manhãs”. Sua intenção
era trazer um grupo de crianças que seria a Turma da Mônica, se ela
realmente existisse no mundo real. E, atuando por completo improviso,
de acordo com o diretor, que sempre questionava o que seus
personagens fariam na situação encenada, as 4 crianças dão um
show! A Giulia Benite está sensacional como a Mônica. Ela é
raivosa, com seus momentos de violência ocorrendo fora da tela, e
sentidos apenas por efeitos sonoros e reações das pessoas ao redor,
mas ela também é surpreendentemente vulnerável em alguns momentos,
algo que não é visto nem nas historinhas, nem em “Laços”, e eu
adorei isso. O Kevin Vechiatto, o único dos 4 a ter um pouco de
experiência com atuação, traduz muito bem os trejeitos do
Cebolinha. Ele é travesso, engraçado, mas também machucado
emocionalmente, pela falta de seu cachorro, e nós, como
espectadores, sentimos isso. Os momentos que ele compartilha tanto
com a Mônica quanto com o Floquinho são muito emocionantes. Eu
queria ver muito mais da Laura Rauseo e do Gabriel Moreira como
Magali e Cascão, que são muito engraçados, com piadas curtas, mas
eficientes, até para os mais crescidos. Temos um impressionante
elenco adulto aqui: Mônica Iozzi, Paulo Vilhena, Fafá Rennó,
Adriano Bolshi, e muito mais, e mesmo com nenhum deles alcançando o
mesmo nível de desenvolvimento das crianças, são atuações muito
competentes. Uma ressalva especial fica com o Rodrigo Santoro, como o
Louco. É um personagem completamente diferente do que estamos
acostumados a ver do ator, mas ele é engraçado, divertido, com a
aparição dele sendo, ao mesmo tempo, significativa para o
desenvolvimento do Cebolinha no filme, e um reforço de uma teoria
que vem intrigando os fãs da Turma.
(Now,
let's go to the part most fans were concerned about when they first
saw the film's visuals: the cast. Complaints like “Oh, Jimmy Five
doesn't have only 5 tufts of hair”, “Smudge isn't visibly dirty”
and “Monica, Maggy and Smudge are wearing shoes” came to the
surface. Clearly, those people did not understand the intentions of
the director, Daniel Rezende, who, besides working as an editor in
the modern classics “City of God” and the two “Elite Squad”
films, also directed the excellent “Bingo: O Rei das Manhãs”
(Bingo: The King of the Mornings). His intention was to bring a group
of children who would be Monica's Gang, if it existed in real life.
And, acting based on complete improvisation, with the director always
questioning what their characters would do in the situation set, the
4 children rock the stage! Giulia Benite is sensational as Monica.
She's angry, with her moments of violence set offscreen, and only
felt through sound effects and people's reactions, but also
surprisingly vulnerable in some moments, something that is not seen
in the original comics or in “Laços”, and I loved that. Kevin
Vechiatto, the only one of the 4 who had an experience with acting,
can replicate Jimmy Five's characteristics very well. He's wicked,
funny, but also emotionally hurt, because of his dog missing, and we,
as viewers, feel that with him. The moments he shares with Monica and
with Fluffy are really, really emotional. I wish I could've seen more
of Laura Rauseo and Gabriel Moreira as Maggy and Smudge, who are
really funny, with short, but effective jokes, even for the ones that
have already grown up. We have an impressive adult cast here: Monica
Iozzi, Paulo Vilhena, Fafá Rennó, Adriano Bolshi, and so much more,
and even if they don't reach the same level of development as the
children, they are very competent actors. A special exception stays
with Rodrigo Santoro, who plays Nutty Ned (Louco in Portuguese, a
character who is crazy, as his Brazilian name states [Louco =
crazy]). He's a completely different character from what we are used
to see from him, but he's funny and fun to see, with his appearance
being, at the same time, significant for Jimmy Five's development in
the film, and a reinforcement of a theory that's been intriguing the
Gang's fans.)
Tecnicamente,
o filme é impecável. Ele possui uma direção competente do Daniel
Rezende, que, se as sequências já planejadas virem a luz do dia,
será o Kevin Feige do Universo Cinematográfico de Maurício de
Sousa. Ele é muito, muito bom aqui, mesmo com o filme sendo
totalmente diferente da sua obra anterior mencionada acima, “Bingo:
O Rei das Manhãs”. Ele conhece o universo da Turma de perto e ele
transfere esse universo para a tela da forma mais fiel e realista
possível, com a ajuda de uma equipe maravilhosa. A fotografia é
simplesmente magnífica, eu fiquei completamente encantado com o
visual de “Laços”, é um filme colorido, vistoso e muito bem
produzido. A direção de arte, em especial com o cabelo e o figurino
dos personagens, é sensacional. Ao vermos os personagens na tela
sendo tão similares aos dos quadrinhos, não sentimos nada além de
alegria e prazer ao notarmos a fidelidade extrema que essa equipe deu
a eles. A trilha sonora instrumental, com a presença ilustre do
“Tema da Mônica”, é magistral, ditando o tom do filme. Teve uma
música do Tiago Iorc perto da conclusão, e mesmo não sendo muito
fã, adorei a cena em que ela é posta. Há um uso em CGI em algumas
cenas, principalmente as com o Floquinho, que é um cachorro verde.
Muitas pessoas viram como uma falha do filme, mas eu reconheço como
uma evolução de como o cinema pipoca brasileiro esteja chegando aos
pés do americano, mesmo que aos poucos, e isso é sempre bom.
(Technically,
the movie is flawless. It has a competent direction by Daniel
Rezende, who, if the already planned sequels see the light of day,
will be the Kevin Feige of the Mauricio de Sousa Cinematic Universe.
(Mauricio de Sousa is the creator of the Gang, he's basically our
Stan Lee (LOL).) He's really, really good here, even with this film
being completely different from his previous work in “Bingo: The
King of the Mornings”. He knows the Gang's universe closely and he
manages to transfer this universe to the screen in the most faithful,
realistic way possible, with the help of a wonderful crew. The
cinematography is just magnificent, I was fascinated by its visuals,
with it being a very colorful, gorgeous and very well produced film.
The art direction, specially concerning the hair and costumes of the
characters, is sensational. As we see the characters on the screen
being so similar to the ones in the comics, we don't feel anything
but joy and pleasure as we notice the extreme faithfulness that this
crew gave them. The instrumental score, with the rightful presence of
“Monica's Theme” (Tema da Mônica), is masterful, dictating the
tone of the film. There is a song by Tiago Iorc near the conclusion
of it, and even though I'm not a fan, I loved the scene in which it
is played. There is an use of CGI in some scenes, mainly those
involving Fluffy, which is a green dog. Many people saw it as a flaw,
but I recognize it as an evolution of how Brazilian blockbuster
cinema is getting closer to the American one, even if it's one step
at a time, and that's always a good thing.)
Resumindo,
“Turma da Mônica – Laços” é um presente. É, ao mesmo tempo,
um ponto de partida para novas gerações de fãs e uma jornada
emocionante cheia de nostalgia para aqueles que cresceram lendo as
historinhas da Turma. Além de ser o melhor filme brasileiro que eu
assisti nos últimos tempos, também é o melhor filme do ano.

Gang's stories. Along with being the best Brazilian film I've seen in
recent times, it is also the best movie of the year.
