E aí, meus cinéfilos queridos! Tudo bem com vocês? Estou de volta, e vim aqui falar de um filme que está sendo apontado como um dos principais indicados à várias categorias do Oscar ano que vem. É a primeira produção de um dos diretores mais renomados de todos os tempos para a Netflix, e traz um elenco inacreditavelmente talentoso para contar uma incrível história real. Então, sem mais delongas, vamos falar sobre “O Irlandês”. Vamos lá!

(What's up, my dear film buffs! How are you doing? I'm back, and I'm here to talk about a film that's being pointed as one of the main nominees to several categories in the Oscars next year. It's the first Netflix production from one of the most acclaimed directors of all time, and reunites an unbelievably talented cast to tell an incredible true story. So, without further ado, let's talk about “The Irishman”. Let's go!)

O filme é narrado por Frank “O Irlandês” Sheeran (Robert De Niro), um veterano da Segunda Guerra Mundial condecorado que se envolve com uma família de mafiosos, a família Bufalino, encabeçada por Russell (Joe Pesci). Agora velho, ele começa a refletir sobre os eventos definitivos de sua carreira no mundo do crime organizado, que tiveram um papel crucial no desaparecimento de seu amigo, o sindicalista Jimmy Hoffa (Al Pacino).

(The film is narrated by Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran (Robert De Niro), a decorated veteran from WWII who gets himself involved with a crime family, the Bufalinos, whose boss is Russell (Joe Pesci). Now, as an old man, he begins to reflect on the definitive events of his career in the crime world, which played an essential part in the disappearance of his friend, trade union leader Jimmy Hoffa (Al Pacino).)

Ok, antes de falar sobre o filme em si, vou dedicar algumas linhas falando sobre minhas expectativas para o filme. Antes de “O Irlandês” ser anunciado, eu não tinha assistido à nenhum dos filmes de máfia que o Martin Scorsese tinha feito. Há algum tempo atrás, finalmente tive a chance de assistir a “Os Bons Companheiros” e adorei. Pra acrescentar, tinha visto algumas críticas falando que esse filme estava na mesma veia do que “Os Bons Companheiros”, então coloquei minhas expectativas lá no alto. E além do mais, temos Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, Al Pacino e Harvey Keitel em um só filme. Só por causa dessa reunião de dar inveja, “O Irlandês” é um filme que vale a pena assistir. Pode-se dizer que esse filme representa dois extremos máximos na carreira de Scorsese: é o filme mais longo e o filme mais caro que ele já fez. Se brincar, é a produção mais ambiciosa que a Netflix fez até agora. E essa ambição realmente valeu a pena, porque o filme é muito bom, apesar que, na minha opinião, outros filmes do Scorsese são um pouquinho melhores. Ok, vamos ao roteiro. Bom, para aqueles que nunca viram um filme de máfia na vida, saibam que não é pancadaria, tiro e porrada o tempo inteiro. Filmes do gênero tendem a possuir muito diálogo, o que colabora para uma maior compreensão do que está acontecendo. E é exatamente isso que acontece aqui: o filme tem cenas de ação muito violentas e realistas, mas ele também é repleto de diálogos explicativos e, como é baseado em fatos reais, eles tornam o filme muito mais interessante. O roteiro transita entre 3 linhas temporais diferentes de forma bem orgânica, principalmente por conta da edição. O artifício da narração em voice-over colabora para que o espectador não fique perdido nas 3h30min de duração (agora, “O Irlandês” é oficialmente o filme mais longo que eu já vi na vida). O filme tem personagens muito bem construídos, eles têm muita personalidade e incentivam o espectador a pesquisar mais sobre eles quando os créditos começarem a ser exibidos. O roteiro consegue muito bem transitar entre dois estados de espírito: ao mesmo tempo que o filme é muito engraçado, ele também consegue ser muito triste, pois é um filme que, essencialmente, lida com os conceitos de pertencimento e culpa. E essa culpa é muito bem abordada, especialmente nos momentos finais do filme, que são de cortar o coração.

(Ok, before I start talking about the film itself, I'm going to dedicate some time to talk about my expectations for it. Before “The Irishman” was announced, I had never seen any of the mafia films that Martin Scorsese had directed before. Some months ago, I finally got the chance to see “Goodfellas” and I loved it. And to make it even better, I had read in some reviews that this movie followed the same vibe as “Goodfellas”, so my expectations were sky high. And besides, we have Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, Al Pacino and Harvey Keitel working together in one film. Just because of this reunion to die for, “The Irishman” is a film worth watching. It can be said that this movie represents two maximum extremes in Scorsese's career: it is both his longest-running and most expensive film he's ever made. This is probably the most ambitious production Netflix has ever been involved in, for that matter. And that ambition really paid off, because it is a great movie, although, in my opinion, some other Scorsese movies are a little bit better. Ok, let's talk about the script. Well, for those who haven't seen a mafia movie ever, know that it's not just endless violence, with punches, blood, and guns galore. Films in this genre tend to have a lot of dialogue, which collaborates for a higher comprehension to what's going on. And that's exactly what happens here: it does have violent and realistic action scenes, but it is also filled with explanatory dialogue, which, because of the fact that it is based on a true story, makes it a whole lot more interesting to watch. The script follows 3 different timelines, and the transition between them is made in a way that is very organic, thanks to the editing. The voice-over narration really helps the viewer in knowing what's going on, so that they don't get lost in the extensive running time of 3 hours and 30 minutes (which makes “The Irishman”, officially, the longest-running movie I've ever seen in my life). It also has really well-developed characters, filled with personality and they motivate the viewer in researching for their story after the credits start rolling. One thing that the script does wonderfully is transitioning between two moods: while it is really funny, it can also be very sad, as it essentially deals with themes of belonging and guilt. And that guilt is very well dealt with, especially in the film's final moments, which are truly heart-wrenching.)

Além de ter um roteiro muito ambicioso, o elenco é de dar inveja a qualquer outro cineasta. A começar pela trindade composta por Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci e Al Pacino: ao meu ver, o Robert De Niro pode dificultar (e muito) a corrida de Joaquin Phoenix ao Oscar de Melhor Ator, porque ele está MUITO bom. A crise de identidade que o personagem dele tem ao longo da trama é um dos pontos principais do filme, e o ator consegue lidar com essa crise de modo estupendo. O Joe Pesci e o Al Pacino são tão relevantes para a trama do que o De Niro, mas acho que no Oscar, eles serão indicados a Melhor Ator Coadjuvante, porque as performances deles estão inacreditavelmente boas. O Joe Pesci não chega a ser tão sádico quanto o seu personagem em “Os Bons Companheiros”, mas ele dá outra performance digna de prêmios e extremamente convincente. Mas quem rouba o holofote é o Al Pacino. Esse é um que tenho certeza que não vai sair do Oscar de mãos vazias, pois ele interpreta um homem bem misterioso e muito sarcástico, o que faz do Jimmy Hoffa de Al Pacino o meu personagem favorito do filme. Em papéis coadjuvantes, mas que valem a pena mencionar, temos Bobby Canavale, Ray Romano, Anna Paquin, Stephen Graham, Harvey Keitel, Jesse Plemons e Jack Huston, e todos trabalham muito bem com o material que é dado a cada um.

(Besides having a very ambitious script, the cast of “The Irishman” can cause envy to every other filmmaker. Starting with the trinity composed by Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci and Al Pacino: in my opinion, Robert De Niro can make Joaquin Phoenix's race for the Oscar for Best Actor (a lot) harder, because he's REALLY good. The identity crisis his character suffers with throughout the plot is one of the movie's main points, and he manages to deal with this crisis in a stupendous way. Joe Pesci and Al Pacino are just as relevant to the plot as De Niro is, but I think that, in the Oscars, they will be nominated for Best Supporting Actor, because their performances are unbelievably good. Joe Pesci's character here is not as sadistic as his character in “Goodfellas”, yet he delivers another award-worthy, extremely convincing performance. But the showstopper here is Al Pacino. I'm sure this one won't leave the Oscars empty-handed, as he plays a very mysterious and really sarcastic man, which makes Al Pacino's Jimmy Hoffa my favorite character in the film. In supporting, yet worth mentioning roles, we have Bobby Canavale, Ray Romano, Anna Paquin, Stephen Graham, Harvey Keitel, Jesse Plemons and Jack Huston, and all of them work really well with the material that's given to each one of them.)

Os aspectos técnicos aqui são impecáveis, o que pode ser uma consequência do altíssimo orçamento. A direção de fotografia é bem fluida, a câmera se movimenta de maneira bem natural, o que é ótimo. A direção de arte recria muito bem todas as épocas que o filme retrata, dos figurinos aos cenários. Mas se alguns dos aspectos técnicos aqui fossem 100% irretocáveis, esses seriam a edição, os efeitos especiais e a maquiagem. A edição porque, como dito anteriormente, o filme transita entre 3 linhas temporais diferentes, e de um modo que não perde a atenção do espectador. Os efeitos especiais porque há um raro caso de rejuvenescimento digital que realmente é convincente e quase invisível aqui, exceto em um flashback da Segunda Guerra Mundial, onde o rosto do Robert De Niro pareceu algo que saiu de um videogame bem atualizado. E a maquiagem porque é um dos principais modos pelo qual o espectador percebe a passagem de tempo, o que é muito criativo. Na minha opinião, esse filme corre na frente na disputa para alguns dos prêmios técnicos ano que vem, em especial Melhor Montagem, Maquiagem e Penteado e Efeitos Visuais.

(The technical aspects here are flawless, which may be a consequence of its really high budget. The cinematography is really fluid, the camera moves in a very natural way, which is great. The art direction manages to recreate, in a very believable way, all the times the movie is set in, from the costumes to the sets. But if some of the technical aspects here were 100% perfect, those would be the editing, the visual effects and the make-up. The editing because, as I said before, the film transitions between 3 different timelines, and in a way that doesn't lose the viewer's attention. The visual effects because, here, we have a rare case of really convincing, almost invisible digital de-aging, except in a WWII flashback, where Robert De Niro's face looked like something out of a really recent videogame. And the make-up because it's one of the main ways in which the viewer can notice the passage of time, which is really creative. In my opinion, this film is a frontrunner in the race for some of the technical categories in the Oscars, especially Best Film Editing, Makeup and Hairstyling and Visual Effects.)

Resumindo, “O Irlandês” é um excelente filme. Com uma história real impressionante como base, e fazendo uso de um elenco muito talentoso e aspectos técnicos incríveis, Martin Scorsese retorna ao gênero de máfia com grande estilo e ambição, o que pode ajudar o filme a se tornar um destaque nas premiações do ano que vem!

With an astounding true story as its basis, and making use of a very talented cast and incredible technical aspects, Martin Scorsese returns to the mafia genre with great style and ambition, which may really help the film in becoming a highlight in next year's award season!
