queridos! Tudo bem com vocês? Estou de volta, com a resenha de um
filme que prova que ambição não é sinônimo de qualidade. Ao
contrário de “O Irlandês”, de Martin Scorsese, essa produção
da Netflix foi feita em uma escala menor, mais intimista, e consegue
ser tão emocionante quanto o épico de máfia de Scorsese. Então,
sem mais delongas, vamos falar sobre “História de um Casamento”.
Vamos lá!
(What's up, my dear
film buffs! How are you doing? I'm back, with the review of a film
that proves ambition doesn't always mean quality. Unlike Martin
Scorsese's “The Irishman”, this Netflix production was made on a
smaller, more intimate scale, and it manages to be just as emotional
as Scorsese's mafia epic. So, without further ado, let's talk about
“Marriage Story”. Let's go!)
O filme conta a
história de um casal, Nicole (Scarlett Johansson) e Charlie (Adam
Driver), que está passando por muitos problemas, e os dois, então,
decidem se divorciar. Eles tinham concordado em não contratar
advogados para tratar do divórcio, mas Nicole muda de ideia após
receber a indicação de Nora Fanshaw (Laura Dern), especialista no
assunto. Surpreso com a decisão da ex-esposa, Charlie agora precisa
de um advogado para tratar da custódia do filho deles, Henry (Azhy
Robertson).
(The film tells the
story of a couple, Nicole (Scarlett Johansson) and Charlie (Adam
Driver), that's been going through a lot of struggles, so the two
decide to get divorced. They had agreed on not hiring any lawyers to
discuss the divorce, but Nicole changes her mind after discovering
Nora Fanshaw (Laura Dern), who's an expert on the subject. Surprised
with his ex-wife's decision, Charlie now needs a lawyer to discuss
the custody of their son, Henry (Azhy Robertson).)
Bom, pra começar, eu
não sabia direito o que esperar desse filme. Tendo apenas visto um
filme do Noah Baumbach (“Os Meyerowitz: Família Não se Escolhe”,
que também é da Netflix), eu não tinha certeza se o estilo
implantado em “Os Meyerowitz” era já o estilo característico do
diretor. Pelo fato de “História de um Casamento” ter tido uma
corrida impressionante em vários festivais de cinema ao redor do
mundo, como o prestigiado Festival de Veneza, o Festival de Toronto e
o Festival de Cinema de Nova York, fui ficando cada vez mais
interessado no filme, que, à primeira vista, era conhecido por
juntar dois atores muito conhecidos: Scarlett Johansson (que
interpreta Natasha Romanoff, mais conhecida como Viúva Negra, nos
filmes da Marvel) e Adam Driver (que interpreta o vilão Kylo Ren na
nova trilogia de Star Wars). E, junto com “Parasita”, foi o filme
que mais me surpreendeu o ano inteiro. Eu não tinha lido nenhuma
crítica, só alguns elogios aqui e ali, e eu realmente gostei do
filme. O roteiro do Noah Baumbach se movimenta muito bem, funcionando
como um drama familiar com alguns toques de comédia. O mais
interessante é que, pra mim, “História de um Casamento” é mais
um daqueles filmes que possuem uma veia teatral, como se fosse uma
peça, porque é um filme que não possui locações tão difíceis
de construir, no caso de uma peça, e é um roteiro quase
inteiramente apoiado na capacidade de seus atores de transmitir
emoções. E essas emoções são transmitidas aqui do modo mais
honesto e humano possível, fugindo do melodrama que quase domina
filmes que seguem a mesma trama. Outra coisa que o roteiro faz muito
bem é o fato de que nenhum dos dois protagonistas é colocado em um
pedestal, nenhum deles é taxado como perfeito, como o pai/marido ou
a mãe/esposa ideal. Todas as falhas, egoísmos, vícios, resumindo,
todas as coisas que fazem da Nicole e do Charlie seres humanos são
expostos da maneira mais emocionante e realista possível, e nós,
como espectadores, conseguimos sentir essas falhas e emoções de uma
forma muito íntima, devido ao roteiro e às atuações de Johansson
e Driver. E é justamente essa intimidade e o tom honesto, humano e
realista da trama que fazem desse roteiro um dos principais
concorrentes ao Oscar de Melhor Roteiro Original no ano que vem,
junto com “Parasita”.
Resumindo, o roteiro de
“História de um Casamento” aposta mais no drama do que na
comédia, e entrega uma história honesta, humana e realista,
consolidando Noah Baumbach como um dos principais concorrentes ao
Oscar ano que vem.
(Well, for starters, I
didn't know what to expect from this movie. Having only seen one Noah
Baumbach film (“The Meyerowitz Stories”, also a Netflix
production), I wasn't sure if the style shown in “Meyerowitz” was
already the director's characteristic cinematic style. Because of the
fact that “Marriage Story” had an impressive run in film
festivals around the world, like the prestigious Venice Film
Festival, the Toronto International Film Festival, and the New York
Film Festival, I was getting more and more interested in checking out
the film, which, at first, was known for starring two very well-known
actors nowadays: Scarlett Johansson (who portrays Natasha Romanoff,
aka Black Widow, in the Marvel movies) and Adam Driver (who portrays
villain Kylo Ren in the new Star Wars trilogy). And, along with
“Parasite”, this was the most surprising film I've seen all year.
I hadn't read any review, I had just seen some compliments here and
there, and I really liked it. Noah Baumbach's script moves really
well, working as a family drama with a few sprinkles of comedy in one
scene or the other. The most interesting thing is that, for me,
“Marriage Story” is another of those movies that possess a more
theatrical vein, like it was a play, because the sets wouldn't be
that hard to portray, in case of a theatrical production, and the
script depends almost entirely on its actors's capacity of conveying
emotion. And those emotions are transmitted here in the most honest,
human way possible, running away from the melodrama that, almost
always, dominates films that have a similar plot. Another thing the
script does really well is that it doesn't put any of the two
protagonists in a pedestal, none of them is characterized as perfect,
as if they were the ideal dad/husband or mom/wife. Every flaw,
selfishness, vice, actually, everything that makes Nicole and Charlie
human beings is exposed in the most emotional and realistic way
possible, and we, as viewers, are able to feel these flaws and
emotions in a very intimate way, due to the script and Johansson and
Driver's performances. And it's that exact intimacy and the honest,
human, realistic tone of the story that make me believe this will be
one of the main contenders for the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay
next year, along with “Parasite”.
In a nutshell, the
script of “Marriage Story” bets more on drama than comedy, and
delivers an honest, human, realistic story, consolidating Noah
Baumbach as one of the main Oscar contenders next year.)
Como todo bom filme que
parece ser uma peça, “História de um Casamento” tem um ótimo
elenco. O Adam Driver e a Scarlett Johansson estão absolutamente
maravilhosos. Acredito que os papéis deles nesse filme podem ser
capazes de desvinculá-los de seus personagens na cultura pop atual,
porque eles são totalmente diferentes da Viúva Negra e do Kylo Ren.
Eu juro que nunca tinha visto esses dois transmitirem emoções tão
fortes e passionais do jeito que eles transmitiram nesse filme. O
Adam Driver vai dificultar ainda mais a corrida de Joaquin Phoenix ao
Oscar de Melhor Ator, ele se dedica completamente ao papel, se
entrega de corpo e alma às emoções que o personagem dele precisa
transmitir, e funciona perfeitamente. Acho que nunca tinha visto a
Scarlett Johansson em um papel tão emocionante desde “Ela”, de
Spike Jonze. Ela está simplesmente incrível, e nós sentimos, nas
cenas onde os dois contracenam, as emoções que eles querem
expressar e a culpa que eles sentem ao se separar, o que é muito
cativante. Nos coadjuvantes, se destacam Laura Dern, Ray Liotta e
Alan Alda, que interpretam os advogados dos protagonistas; e Julie
Hagerty, Merritt Wever e Wallace Shawn como eficientes alívios
cômicos, e todos trabalham muito bem com o material que lhes é dado.
(Just like every good
movie that feels like a play, “Marriage Story” has a great cast.
Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson are absolutely amazing. I believe
that their roles in this film could be capable of fully untangle them
from their characters in the current pop culture, because they are so
different from Black Widow and Kylo Ren. I swear I had never seen
these two convey such strong, passionate emotions like they did in
this movie. Adam Driver will make Joaquin Phoenix's race to the Oscar
for Best Actor even harder, as he fully dedicates to his role, he
gives his body and soul to the emotions his character needs to
transmit, and it works perfectly. I think I'd never seen Scarlett
Johansson in such an emotional role since “Her”, directed by
Spike Jonze. She is simply incredible, and we feel, in the scenes
where the two are together, the emotions they want to express and the
guilt they feel as they go their separate ways, which is really
captivating. In the supporting roles, the spotlight shines on Laura
Dern, Ray Liotta and Alan Alda, who play the protagonists's lawyers;
and Julie Hagerty, Merritt Wever and Wallace Shawn as efficient comic
reliefs, and all of them work really well with what's given to them.)
Os aspectos técnicos
também são muito bons, mesmo não sendo tão ambiciosos quanto os
de “O Irlandês”. A fotografia é muito boa, sendo bem mais
fechada e focada em algo específico do que aberta e dando atenção
para tudo ao seu alcance, para realçar essa intimidade que o roteiro
propõe. A montagem também é muito bem feita, especialmente nos
flashbacks e em uma cena específica onde o recurso trabalha junto
com os atores para fazer com que a expressão de suas emoções seja
mais explícita. A trilha sonora original do Randy Newman é muito
gostosa de ouvir, possuindo um ar de filme da Pixar, o que serve como
o contraste perfeito para a seriedade e o tom agridoce da história.
A direção de arte é bem menos extravagante e grandiosa do que
produções anteriores da Netflix, mas novamente, o filme não propõe
que esses recursos sejam grandiosos, eles são realistas o suficiente
para nos fazer acreditar que estamos vendo uma história verdadeira
acontecendo na tela, o que encaixa direitinho na proposta do roteiro
de ser algo honesto e humano.
(The technical aspects
are also really good, even if they're not as ambitious as the ones
from “The Irishman”. The cinematography is very good, with the
camera focused on being more closed and centered on something
specific than being open and giving attention to everything on its
reach, in order to enhance this intimacy the script proposes. The
editing is really well done, especially in the flashbacks and in a
specific scene where it works together with the actors to make their
emotion-expressing more explicit. Randy Newman's original score is a
delight to hear, possessing some sort of Pixar vein to it, which is
the perfect thing to contrast with the seriousness and bittersweet
tone of the story. The art direction is way less extravagant and
large-scaled than Netflix's previous productions, but again, the film
doesn't demand that these resources should be big, they are realistic
enough to make us believe we're watching a real-life story on screen,
which fits like a glove in the script's proposal of being something
honest and human.)
Resumindo, “História
de um Casamento” é um filme incrível. Ele possui uma trama
honesta, humana, e dolorosamente realista, o que reflete a
originalidade do roteiro. Fazendo uso de um elenco extremamente
talentoso, Noah Baumbach cria uma história sobre relacionamentos
que, devido à carga emocional embutida no roteiro, será bem difícil
de esquecer.

painfully realistic plot, which reflects the originality of the
script. Making use of an extremely talented cast, Noah Baumbach
creates a story about relationships that, due to the emotional tone
of the script, will be pretty hard to forget.
