E aí, galerinha de cinéfilos! Aqui quem fala é o João Pedro, e estou aqui para falar de uma série maravilhosa. Ela é curta, possuindo apenas duas temporadas, é uma animação, mas subverte completamente as expectativas do espectador, que não esquecerá dela tão cedo. Então, sem mais delongas, vamos falar do mundo extraordinariamente estranho de “Gravity Falls”. Vamos lá!

(What's up, film buffs! It's João Pedro, and I'm here to talk about a wonderful TV series. It is short, only being 2 seasons long, it's an animated show, but it completely subverts the expectations of the viewer, who will not forget about it too soon. So, without further ado, let's talk about the extraordinarily weird world of “Gravity Falls”. Let's go!)

A série toma o curso de um período de férias de verão e acompanha Dipper (voz de Jason Ritter) e Mabel Pines (voz de Kristen Schaal), irmãos gêmeos que são forçados a passar suas férias de verão numa armadilha de turistas comandada pelo seu tio-avô Stan (voz de Alex Hirsch), numa cidadezinha pacata no interior do Oregon chamada Gravity Falls. Certo dia, Dipper encontra um diário no meio da floresta, e munido dele, ele começa a entender as estranhezas que percorrem aquela cidade.

(The series takes course over a summer vacation period and follows Dipper (voiced by Jason Ritter) and Mabel Pines (voiced by Kristen Schaal), twins who are forced to spend their summer vacation in a tourist trap owned by their great-uncle Stan (voiced by Alex Hirsch), in a quiet little town inside Oregon, named Gravity Falls. One day, Dipper finds a journal in the middle of the woods, and, with it in his hands, he begins to understand the weirdnesses that run through that town.)

Ok, pra começar, já falo que Alex Hirsch, criador da série, é um gênio, por fazer de “Gravity Falls” uma série atraente tanto para o público infantil quanto para o público adulto. (Meu pai e meu irmão acompanharam toda a série comigo, e eles também acharam ela maravilhosa.) A primeira concepção que vem às nossas cabeças é que será “apenas um desenho”, com personagens bobinhos, tramas previsíveis e piadinhas infantis. Mas não, vai muito além disso. Vamos começar pela primeira temporada. Com 20 episódios, ela estabelece os personagens, decide de qual lado cada personagem está e dá personalidade a eles. Nenhum episódio é completamente desperdiçado, ou reduzido à um “filler” (episódio feito para “encher linguiça”), já que todos contribuem para a trama principal. A segunda (e última) temporada é uma das melhores coisas que eu já vi na história da televisão. Com os sub-mistérios da primeira temporada resolvidos, novos antagonistas e mistérios primitivos emergem à superfície, para culminar em um dos melhores episódios finais da televisão moderna. Cada um dos 40 episódios de “Gravity Falls” é uma tremenda obra-prima, subvertendo os estereótipos infantis do Disney Channel e Disney XD, e entregando algo universal, que todos podem aproveitar, independente de idade ou gênero. E é bem divertido, porque os episódios percorrem vários gêneros: tem alguns que possuem uma veia de fantasia, outros de ficção-científica, e outros tem até elementos de terror, e todos esses episódios funcionam. Os personagens são uma maravilha à parte: Dipper é um dos melhores protagonistas de série que eu já vi, ele possui uma determinação e personalidade cativantes; Mabel dá a primeira impressão que será uma personagem irritante, mas acaba sendo uma das mais importantes peças que fazem a série funcionar; Stan começa como um personagem que não tem nada a esconder, e nós nos surpreendemos completamente com seu desenvolvimento ao longo da série, e por aí vai. Cada um dos personagens tem camadas, e é muito interessante quando passamos a explorar além da superfície das personalidades deles. Outra coisa que faz essa série cair como uma luva no público adulto é o sentimento de nostalgia que ela traz, seja pelo enredo, ou seja pelas várias referências que ela põe ao longo dos episódios. Há várias referências à “Arquivo X”, “Twin Peaks”, “Free Willy”, “A Morte do Demônio”, “Jurassic Park”, “Tron”, “Street Fighter”, e várias outras propriedades da cultura pop, e pra mim, não foi fácil sentir essa nostalgia, por não ter vivido nessa época dos anos 80-90, mas como já tinha conhecido essas franquias, entender essas referências foi um tremendo deleite. Pra não dar spoilers, só digo que “Gravity Falls” é maravilhosa. Ela subverte todo e qualquer estereótipo de séries infantis da Disney, e entrega algo que qualquer pessoa pode aproveitar.

(Okay, for starters, I'm just gonna say that Alex Hirsch, creator of the show, is a genius, for making “Gravity Falls” attractive for both kids and adults. (My dad and my brother watched it with me, and they both think it's wonderful.) The first conception that comes to our minds is that it will be “just a cartoon”, with silly characters, predictable plots and childish jokes. But no, it goes way beyond that. Let's start with season one. With 20 episodes, it establishes the characters, decides which side they are in, and gives them personality. None of these episodes are wasted or reduced to a “filler” (an episode that “fills things up” before returning to the main plot), as they all contribute to the main plotline. The second (and final) season is probably one of the best things I've seen on TV. With all the minor mysteries from season 1 solved, new antagonists and ancient mysteries rise to the surface, in order to culminate in one of the greatest final episodes in modern television. Each one of the 40 episodes in “Gravity Falls” is a flat-out masterpiece, subverting every childish stereotype that Disney Channel or Disney XD may have, and delivering something universal, that anyone can enjoy, no matter what age or gender. And it is really fun, because the episodes run through different genres: some episodes rely on fantasy, others, on science-fiction, and others have some elements of horror, believe it, and all of those episodes work. The characters are an individual wonder: Dipper is one of the best protagonists in a TV show, his determination and personality are captivating; Mabel makes us think that she will be very annoying, and then ends up being one of the most important characters for the show to work; Stan starts off as a character who has nothing to hide, and we are completely surprised by his character development throughout the show, and it goes further. Each one of these characters have layers, and it is really interesting when we explore what's beyond the surfaces of their personalities. Another thing that makes this show enjoyable for adults is the feeling of nostalgia it brings, because of the main plot, or because of the several references it drops in each episode. There are references to “The X-Files”, “Twin Peaks”, “Free Willy”, “Evil Dead”, “Jurassic Park”, “Tron”, “Street Fighter”, and to many other properties in pop culture, and to me, it wasn't easy to feel this nostalgia, as I didn't live in the 80s or 90s, but understanding these references was a true delight. So, in order to not give any spoilers, I'm just gonna say that “Gravity Falls” is wonderful. It subverts every childish stereotype that Disney shows may have, and delivers something anyone can enjoy.)

O elenco de vozes dessa série é uma das razões de seu sucesso. Jason Ritter, filho do falecido ator John Ritter, cai como uma luva no papel de Dipper, que é inspirado no criador da série, Alex Hirsch. Ele dá personalidade ao personagem, ele é carismático, engraçado, inocente, e muito corajoso. Eu não consigo encontrar ninguém melhor do que a Kristen Schaal para interpretar a Mabel. A voz dela já é o suficiente para estabelecer a personalidade da irmã gêmea de Dipper, inspirada em Ariel, irmã gêmea de Alex Hirsch. Além dos dois principais, vários atores famosos, tanto pelo cinema quanto pela TV, fazem participações aqui, entre eles Linda Cardellini (Freaks and Geeks), J.K. Simmons (Whiplash), T.J. Miller (Deadpool), Justin Roiland (Rick and Morty), Neil deGrasse Tyson, Kyle MacLachlan (Twin Peaks), Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation), Will Forte (The Last Man on Earth), Chelsea Peretti (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Nathan Fillion (Castle), e Louis CK (Louie), e todos esses atores trabalham muito bem, independente da importância de seus personagens para a trama principal. Mas quem rouba a cena no elenco, somente para reforçar sua genialidade, é o criador da série, Alex Hirsch, que interpreta mais de 10 personagens significativos aqui, com 4 desses personagens sendo cruciais para o desfecho de “Gravity Falls”, e, assim como o trabalho de Seth MacFarlane, que dubla Peter, Brian e Stewie em “Uma Família da Pesada”, a flexibilidade de Hirsch ao fazer as vozes de seus personagens aqui é impressionante.

(The voice cast of this show is one of the reasons of its success. Jason Ritter, son of late actor John Ritter, fits like a glove in the role of Dipper, who is inspired on the show's creator, Alex Hirsch. He gives personality to the character, he is charismatic, funny, naive, and really brave. I couldn't find anyone better to play Mabel than Kristen Schaal. Her voice is already enough to establish the personality of Dipper's twin sister, who is inspired on Ariel, Alex Hirsch's twin sister. Besides the main two, several famous actors, from movies or TV, make some appearances here, like Linda Cardellini (Freaks and Geeks), J.K. Simmons (Whiplash), T.J. Miller (Deadpool), Justin Roiland (Rick and Morty), Neil deGrasse Tyson, Kyle MacLachlan (Twin Peaks), Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation), Will Forte (The Last Man on Earth), Chelsea Peretti (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Nathan Fillion (Castle), and Louis CK (Louie), and all of those actors work really well, no matter the importance of their characters to the main plotline. But the scene stealer in the cast, only to reinforce his genius, is series creator Alex Hirsch, who portrays more than 10 significant characters here, with 4 of those characters being crucial to the ending of “Gravity Falls”, and, just like Seth MacFarlane, who voices Peter, Brian and Stewie in “Family Guy”, Hirsch's flexibility in voicing his characters here is impressive.)

Uma das melhores coisas sobre “Gravity Falls” é o mistério. Há vários deles ao longo da série: “Quem é o Autor dos diários?”, “Qual é a origem de Bill Cipher?”, “Qual o significado dos suéteres da Mabel?”, e por aí vai. Todos esses mistérios principais são resolvidos até o final da série, graças aos excelentes roteiros e às explicações de Hirsch no especial “Between the Pines”, onde ele discute curiosidades e teorias sobre a série. Mas há mistérios que a equipe do programa deixa para o espectador resolver. Por exemplo, em cada episódio, no final dos créditos, há uma cifra, um código, com letras embaralhadas. Isso tem a capacidade de despertar o interesse do espectador em decifrar aquele código. Outro exemplo disso é como, no final de cada episódio da segunda temporada, há uma parte de uma imagem composta por 21 partes de um todo. Esse tipo de coisa, sabem? Além desses mistérios, tem também os easter eggs, aqueles segredos bem escondidos que as pessoas só prestam atenção neles ao ver pela segunda vez. Existem participações secretas de Alex Hirsch em alguns dos episódios, aparições-relâmpago de personagens importantes antes de sua introdução oficial, há várias alusões ao número 618 (6/18 – 18 de Junho, aniversário de Hirsch), e por aí vai. Essa é a magia de assistir a “Gravity Falls” mais de uma vez, você descobre coisas novas e vai enriquecendo seu conhecimento sobre a mitologia da série, o que somente te faz achá-la mais brilhante ainda.

(One of the best things about “Gravity Falls” is the mystery. There are several of them throughout the show: “Who is the Author of the Journals?”, “What's the origin of Bill Cipher?”, “What's the meaning of Mabel's sweaters?”, and so it goes. All of these main mysteries are solved by the end of the series, thanks to excellent scripts and Hirsch's explanations in the special “Between the Pines”, where he discusses curiosities and theories about it. But there are mysteries that the show's team leaves for the viewer to solve. For example, in each episode, by the end of the credits, there's a cipher, a code, with shuffled letters. That has the capacity of raising the interest of the viewer on deciphering that code. Another example of this is like, in the end of each episode in season 2, there's a part of an image composed by 21 parts of a whole. This kind of thing, you know? Besides these mysteries, there are also easter eggs, those well-hidden secrets that people only pay attention to when watching it for the second time. There are secret Alex Hirsch cameos in some of the episodes, quick appearances of important characters before their official introduction, there are several allusions to the number 618 (6/18 – June 18, Hirsch's birthday), and it goes further. That is the magic of watching “Gravity Falls” more than one time, you get to find out new things and you grow on your knowledge of the show's mythology, which will only make you think it's even more brilliant than it already is.)

Então, para resumir essa verdadeira carta de amor que fiz a uma das minhas séries favoritas de todos os tempos, irei modificar a narração de Dipper nos momentos finais da série, o que encaixa perfeitamente com o que quero dizer:
