cinéfilos! Estou de volta, e venho aqui trazer para vocês a resenha
de um dos filmes que eu estava mais esperando para ver esse ano.
Dirigido por Danny Boyle, e roteirizado por Richard Curtis, é uma
simples, mas singela homenagem à melhor banda de todos os tempos.
Então, sem mais delongas, vamos falar sobre “Yesterday”. Vamos
lá!
(What's up, film buffs!
I'm back, and I come here to bring to you the review of one of the
movies I was most excited to see this year. Directed by Danny Boyle,
with a screenplay written by Richard Curtis, it's a simple, yet
sincere homage to the greatest band of all times. So, without further
ado, let's talk about “Yesterday”. Let's go!)
Jack (Himesh Patel) é
um aspirante a músico que vem enfrentando problemas com sua música,
junto com sua empresária e melhor amiga, Ellie (Lily James). Um dia,
Jack sofre um acidente, e acorda em uma realidade onde ele é a única
pessoa que se lembra dos Beatles. Com isso em mente, ele começa a
construir uma carreira musical baseada nas músicas de seus ídolos.
(Jack (Himesh Patel) is
an aspiring musician who has been facing problems with his music,
along with his manager and best friend, Ellie (Lily James). One day,
Jack gets involved in an accident, and wakes up in a reality where
he's the only one who remembers the Beatles. With that in mind, he
begins to build a musical career based on his idols's songs.)
Ok, aqui está o
problema com expectativa: como deu pra perceber, o enredo do filme é
bem simples, e o próprio filme reflete a simplicidade do enredo.
Realmente, é um filme que não tenta ser grandioso, ou entrar para a
lista de melhores musicais de todos os tempos. Algo que reforça isso
é o fato do roteiro ter sido escrito pelo Richard Curtis, que é um
especialista em fazer comédias românticas, um gênero onde um dos
principais ingredientes para ele funcionar é o clichê. A notícia
boa sobre o Richard Curtis é que ele pega esses clichês e dá um
toque a mais a eles, permitindo assim, que esses sejam mais
originais, como aconteceu em “Quatro Casamentos e um Funeral”,
“Simplesmente Amor” e “Questão de Tempo”, todos escritos por
Curtis. Com isso em mente, vamos ao roteiro de “Yesterday”. Desde
o anúncio do filme, eu gostei do enredo, dessa ideia onde só uma
pessoa lembra das músicas dos Beatles e tenta construir uma carreira
musical com elas, parcialmente pelo fato dos Beatles serem minha
banda favorita, e também pelo fato de ser escrito pelo Richard
Curtis. É um roteiro simples? Sim. Eu achei até um pouquinho curto,
se comparado às durações de “Simplesmente Amor” e “Questão
de Tempo”, que têm mais de 2 horas cada. Mas é divertido? Com
certeza. Os personagens são bem desenvolvidos o bastante para fazer
o espectador se importar com eles; há o uso de várias músicas dos
Beatles aqui, desde as mais conhecidas, como “Yesterday”, “Let
it Be” e “I Wanna Hold Your Hand”, até as mais obscuras, como
“Maxwell's Silver Hammer”; e a história se movimenta bem o
suficiente para o espectador conseguir acompanhar o passo. Pode-se
dizer que “Yesterday” é um filme destinado a dois tipos de
pessoas: os Beatlemaníacos ao extremo, que sabem a maioria das
músicas de cor; e aqueles que ainda não conhecem, ou conhecem
pouco, o trabalho do Quarteto de Liverpool, o que justifica o fato da
maioria das músicas colocadas aqui serem as mais famosas do grupo.
Assim como todos os filmes que o Richard Curtis escreveu, tem um
romance inserido aqui, mas ele é bem desenvolvido, possuindo um bom
pano de fundo para influenciar o espectador a torcer por esse casal.
Lembra quando eu falei que o roterista de “Yesterday” é
conhecido por pegar clichês e dar uma mexida neles? Pois é, nesse
filme, tem dois momentos que eu não esperava que acontecessem, e um
foi uma grata surpresa, e eu quase chorei no outro. Tem uma piadinha
recorrente envolvendo o Google, que não fica cansativa, na verdade,
é muito divertida, e o filme tem um tom bem otimista em toda a sua
duração, garantindo um sorriso do espectador ao final da sessão.
(Ok, here's the deal
with expectation: as you could notice, the plot is quite simple, and
the movie reflects the simplicity of its plot. Really, it's a film
that doesn't want to be one of the greatest musicals of all time.
Something that reinforces this is the fact that it's written by
Richard Curtis, who is an expert in making romantic comedies, a genre
known for its extensive use of clichés. The good thing about Richard
Curtis is that he takes these clichés, and he gives them a little
twist, making them more original, as it happened in “Four Weddings
and A Funeral”, “Love Actually” and “About Time”, all
written by Curtis. With that in mind, let's go to the script of
“Yesterday”. Ever since this movie was announced, I really liked
the plot, this idea where only one person remembers the Beatles'
songs and tries to build a musical career based on their songs,
partially because they are my favorite band, and also because it was
written by Richard Curtis. Is it a simple script? Yes. I personally
thought it was a bit short, if compared to “Love Actually” and
“About Time”, as those movies run longer than 2 hours. But is it
fun? Absolutely. The characters are well-developed enough to make the
viewers care about them; there are a lot of Beatles songs here, which
go from the most-known ones, like “Yesterday”, “Let it Be”
and “I Wanna Hold Your Hand”, to the most obscure ones, like
“Maxwell's Silver Hammer”; and the story moves itself well enough
for the viewer to keep up with the movie's pace. It can be said that
“Yesterday” is a film for two kinds of people: the hardcore
Beatlemaniacs, who know most of the songs by heart; and those who
still don't know, or know very little, the work by the Fab Four,
which justifies why most of the songs here are the well-known ones.
As it happened with every movie Richard Curtis has written, there is
a romance here, but it is well developed, possessing a good
background in order to influence the viewer to root for them to be
together. Remember when I said that the screenwriter for this film is
known for using clichés and giving them a little twist? Right, there
are two moments here which I wasn't expecting, one of them was a nice
surprise, and I almost cried in the other. There's a recurring joke
involving Google that doesn't run out of steam, it's actually quite
fun, and the movie has a feel-good tone during all of its running
time, making the viewer smile all the way through the very end.)
Além de ter um roteiro
divertido, o elenco também é muito divertido de se ver. Sendo o
primeiro filme do Himesh Patel, que até esse filme chegar, era
conhecido por novelas britânicas, ele faz um bom trabalho aqui. Ele
atua muito bem, canta muito bem, e conquista o espectador com seu
charme e senso de humor. Algo que complementa a atuação de Patel é
a sua química com a personagem da Lily James, conhecida pelo remake
live-action de “Cinderela” ou por ser a jovem Donna de “Mamma
Mia: Lá Vamos Nós de Novo”. Ela tem carisma de sobra, nunca vi
uma personagem ou atuação ruim dessa atriz, e a história de fundo
que os dois compartilham é bem cativante. Fora dos dois
protagonistas, temos a hilária Kate McKinnon, conhecida pelo
programa de esquetes Saturday Night Live, que aqui, tem um senso de
humor bem mais sarcástico como a agente de Jack. Ela chega até a
ser bem psicopata mesmo, só pelo olhar dela, mas mesmo assim, ela
não perde o senso de humor característico estabelecido no SNL, e
Joel Fry como um alívio cômico bem descontraído, e bem mais
genérico do que a Kate McKinnon. E temos também a participação do
Ed Sheeran. Não chega a ser infame como a participação do cantor
em Game of Thrones, ele é engraçado, uma das piadas que fez o filme
ser famoso veio do personagem dele, que é uma versão ficcional, e
até um pouco convencida, dele mesmo. E ele é um ótimo cantor e
compositor, emprestando algumas de suas músicas, e compondo músicas
originais para o filme.
(Besides having a fun
script, the cast is also really fun to watch. As the first film that
Himesh Patel was in (he was known for British soap operas until this
movie came into the picture), he does a pretty good job here. He's a
good actor, a good singer, and he conquers the viewer's heart with
his charm and sense of humor. One thing that complements Patel's
performance is his chemistry with Lily James, known for the
live-action remake of “Cinderella” and for portraying young Donna
in “Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again”. She has charisma to spare, I
have never seen a bad character or a bad performance by this actress,
and the backstory the two protagonists share is really captivating.
Outside the main two, we have the hilarious Kate McKinnon, who is
known for the sketch program Saturday Night Live. She has a really
sarcastic sense of humor here, as Jack's agent, to the point where
she begins to look like a psychopath, just because of her stare, but
still, she doesn't lose her characteristic sense of humor established
on SNL. We also have Joel Fry, as a more buffoon type of comic
relief, and way more generic than Kate McKinnon. And now, we go to Ed
Sheeran's participation in “Yesterday”. It's not infamous, like
his cameo on Game of Thrones, he's funny, one of the jokes that made
the movie famous came from his character, who is a fictional, and a
bit arrogant, version of himself. And he's a great singer and
songwriter, lending some of his songs, and composing original songs
for the film.)
E por último, mas não
menos importante, temos os aspectos técnicos. Sob a direção de
Danny Boyle, conhecido por filmes como “Trainspotting” e
“Extermínio”, “Yesterday” é um filme bem energético. Há
algumas versões das músicas dos Beatles que são mais barulhentas,
mas não são ruins, pelo contrário, elas encaixam perfeitamente no
estilo de instrumental que permeia a música atualmente. A fotografia
é muito boa, a edição é bem eficiente. Os lugares que o Jack
visita para buscar inspiração, e para lembrar das músicas dos
Beatles são repletos de referências ao trabalho da banda. As cenas
musicais são feitas para o público cantar junto, sendo uma das
melhores coisas sobre o filme. E em uma cena em particular, há um
trabalho primoroso de maquiagem, que merece ser reconhecido. Mas sem
spoilers aqui. Como um filme musical, graças aos aspectos técnicos,
“Yesterday” tem energia e charme de sobra para fazer o público
levantar da cadeira, gritar e cantar junto.
(And at last, but not
least, we have the technical aspects. Being directed by Danny Boyle,
who is known for movies like “Trainspotting” and “28 Days
Later”, “Yesterday” is a really energetic film. There are some
versions of Beatles songs here which are a bit louder, but they
aren't bad, on the contrary, they fit perfectly on the style of
instrumentals that goes through music today. The cinematography is
really good, the editing is very efficient. The places that Jack
visits in order to search for inspiration and to remember the songs
by the Beatles are filled with references to the band's work. The
musical scenes are made for the audience to sing along, being one of
the best things about the film. And in one particular scene, there's
a wonderful use of make-up, which deserves to be recognized. But no
spoilers here. As a musical film, thanks to the technical aspects,
“Yesterday” has energy and charm to spare to make the audience
get up from their seats, scream and sing along.)
Resumindo, “Yesterday”
é uma simples, mas singela homenagem à melhor banda de todos os
tempos. Com o auxílio de um roteiro divertido, um elenco talentoso,
e uma baita trilha sonora, é um filme feito para agradar os fãs de
longa data, mas também para apresentar uma nova geração de
Beatlemaníacos ao trabalho desse Quarteto Fabuloso.

hell of a soundtrack, it's a movie made to please the long-term fans,
but also to introduce a new generation of Beatlemaniacs to the Fab
Four's work.
