- O Filme”. Vamos lá!
(What's up, my dear film buffs! How are you guys doing? I'm back, and I'm here to bring to you the review for one of the most anticipated animated films of the year. Even though it has a pretty standard, predictable structure, the film I'm about to review is a fun introduction to a potential cinematic universe based on the properties by Hanna-Barbera. So, without further ado, let's talk about “Scoob!”. Let's go!)

(Feeling repressed by the Mystery Inc. team, Norville “Shaggy” Rogers (voiced by Will Forte) and Scooby-Doo (voiced by Frank Welker) are recruited by superheroes Blue Falcon (voiced by Mark Wahlberg) and Dynomutt (voiced by Ken Jeong) to stop Dick Dastardly's (voiced by Jason Isaacs) plans to open the gates of the Underworld and unleash apocalypse on Earth.)

(I must admit I wasn't so excited to watch this film. Due to the fact that I wasn't that familiar with the Scooby-Doo universe (before this movie, I had only watched the two live-action ones that had been written by James Gunn), and also because of the trailers, which promoted a film that looked totally childish. Even with a few caveats, I'm glad I was wrong. For the standards of Warner Animation Group (the same team that brought us “The LEGO Movie” and “The LEGO Batman Movie”), it's a good film. Not great, but you can have a good time watching it with your family. Let's start with the script. Starting with the strong points, the script perfectly introduces its characters in the film's first 10 minutes. The classic style of Scooby-Doo narratives is rescued and replicated in a very faithful way through this first act. The problems come with what happens after this introduction, and in what I consider to be the weak points, I'd like to highlight 3 main ones: first, when you think about Scooby-Doo, the first genre that comes into your mind is mystery, suspense and even horror, and this film transforms what would be the origin story of Mystery Inc. into a typical superhero film plot; second, “Scoob!” would've been made to be the introduction to a cinematic universe based on the properties by Hanna-Barbera, and they completely missed the opportunity of replicating what Marvel and DC successfully did to their own cinematic universes, that is, dedicating the first films to individually introduce the characters, to put them together afterwards in an epic blockbuster. The film misses that point in introducing Dick Dastardly and Blue Falcon (who belong to other Hanna-Barbera franchises) in the plot, putting these characters together way too early, in my opinion. They should've joined the Scooby-Doo gang after a Wacky Races film and a Dynomutt film, for example. And third, for a mythology that has mystery as an essence, which relies on unpredictability as one of its main attributes, “Scoob!” is a pretty predictable film, which you could already expect from an animated film targeted to children. Another thing that bothered me a lot was the humor. Much alike what happened with a recent production by Warner Animation Group, “The Lego Movie 2”, the humor is significantly turned to a younger audience, which fails in replicating the success that “The LEGO Movie” and “The LEGO Batman Movie” had with a more adult audience. In a nutshell, even though it runs away from its characteristic genre, “Scoob!” has a predictable, yet fun script, which the whole family can enjoy.)

(One of the biggest criticisms regarding this film in the US was the recasting of new names for most of the voice cast instead of using the original voice actors who were already known for voicing Scooby-Doo characters. As I only watched Scooby-Doo stuff dubbed in Portuguese, the new voice cast didn't bother me at all. I really liked Zac Efron as Fred, he's really funny, which is something I didn't expect from the character. Amanda Seyfried's voice perfectly fits Daphne, with that sweet tone in her voice that makes her impossible not to fall in love with. Gina Rodriguez could've had a larger role in the plot as Velma, but she does a great job with what the character has to offer. The gold mine in this voice cast is the quartet composed by Will Forte, Frank Welker, Mark Wahlberg and Jason Isaacs. Will Forte manages to replicate Matthew Lillard's (who played Shaggy in the live-action films written by James Gunn) mannerisms almost perfectly; Frank Welker (as the only original cast member from the Scooby-Doo franchise since 2002) does an exceptional job as the title character; Mark Wahlberg is hilarious as a superhero that has one cog less in their brain; and Jason Isaacs is exactly what a person would imagine the voice of Dick Dastardly sounded like.)

(Another thing that impressed me a lot in the film were the technical aspects, especially the animation. I usually take a step back when something that is traditionally animated is transformed into CGI, but in “Scoob!”'s case, that transition was really well-made. The design of the original characters changed very little, and its a fluid, energetic and vibrant type of animation, which will inevitably attract the eyes of the viewer. Another strong point in the technical aspects is the maintaining of the visual and sound identity of Scooby-Doo properties, meaning, those sound effects, like when Shaggy and Scooby run away from the ghosts, those classic chase sequences made for comic effect, and it goes further. Another thing that may serve as an influence for a more adult audience are the references to other properties that are both inside and outside the Scooby-Doo universe, which are really fun and relatively easy to find. If the other films in this potential Hanna-Barbera cinematic universe (please, let there be a Mad Max-styled Wacky Races film) were made in the same style as this one, at least, one thing's for sure: the animation, at the same time, will introduce a new generation of viewers to these classic characters and will bring that irresistible feeling of nostalgia to those who grew up watching these TV shows.)

Resumindo, “Scooby!

(In a nutshell, “Scoob!” has a formulaic and predictable structure, but the very talented voice cast and the vibrant and energetic animation style, which rescues the essence of these characters, will please both the audience this is targeted for and those who grew up watching the original shows.

I give it a 8,5 out of 10!!

That's it, guys! I hope you liked it! See you next time,

(What's up, my dear film buffs! How are you guys doing? I'm back, in order to bring a special post for you. In today's text, I'll list some actors and actresses that have found a new and powerful voice behind the cameras in directing, without an order of preference. And yes, I will include those directors who only have one film so far in their resumé, because of the fact that a single film substantially increased the viewer's expectations for their next projects. So, without further ado, let's begin!)

  • JORDAN PEELE (Filmes no currículo: “Corra!”
(JORDAN PEELE (Films in his resumé: “Get Out” (2017) and “Us” (2019); Next project as director: Unknown at the moment)

(Starting off with one of the most powerful voices in the thriller-horror genre in recent times, Jordan Peele started off his career as a comedian, as a recurring cast member on the sketch show “Mad TV”, where he met Keegan-Michael Key, with whom he created the acclaimed comedy show “Key and Peele”. Before his debut as a director in “Get Out”, which led him to win the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, Peele already experimented with psychological horror and social aspects in his own comedy show. After the almost unexpected success of his first film, Peele has dedicated himself more to the thriller-horror genre at the moment in his writing and directing projects, and it's safe to say that it was a perfect combination. Peele has total control over his films' atmospheres, the twists and shocking discoveries really cause one hell of an impact on the viewer, to the point where you see the film with a completely different mentality from the first time around, when you rewatch them. I can't wait for his next film.)

  • SOFIA COPPOLA (Filmes no currículo: “As Virgens Suicidas” (1999), “Encontros e Desencontros” (2003), “Maria Antonieta” (2006), “Um Lugar Qualquer” (2010), “Bling Ring: A Gangue de Hollywood” (2013), e “O Estranho que Nós Amamos” (2017); Próximo projeto na direção: “On the Rocks” (2020))
(SOFIA COPPOLA (Films in her resumé: “The Virgin Suicides” (1999), “Lost in Translation” (2003), “Marie Antoinette” (2006), “Somewhere” (2010), “The Bling Ring” (2013), and “The Beguiled” (2017); Next project as director: “On the Rocks” (2020))

(One of the most known names in the extraordinarily talented Coppola family, Sofia Coppola started off her career as an actress as a 1-year-old, in “The Godfather” (1972), directed by her father, Francis Ford Coppola. After her debut, Coppola played more roles in films directed by her father, such as “Peggy Sue Got Married” (1986), and “The Godfather Part III” (1990), where she played the daughter of Michael Corleone. Her performance in the final chapter of Francis Ford Coppola's epic trilogy was widely criticized, which ended up winning her the Golden Raspberries for Worst Supporting Actress and Worst New Star. As Coppola didn't specifically want to create an acting career, 9 years later, she made her directing debut with “The Virgin Suicides”, which had its world premiere in the renowned Cannes Film Festival, where it was widely acclaimed, along with Coppola's direction. Other highlights in her career include the remarkable “Lost in Translation”, which made Sofia the third woman to be nominated for the Oscar for Best Director, and won her the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay; “Somewhere”, which won the Golden Lion in the Venice Film Festival (making Coppola the first American woman to win the award); and “The Beguiled”, which won her the Best Director award in the Cannes Film Festival, making her the second woman to do so. Her next project, “On the Rocks”, promises to be another highlight in her career, because of the fact that it reunites Coppola and Bill Murray, who got nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor because of “Lost in Translation”; and because of the fact that it's distributed by A24, one of the most proeminent film distributors of independent cinema in recent years.)

(BRADLEY COOPER (Films in his resumé: “A Star is Born” (2018); Next project as director: Unknown at the moment)

(Before his astounding directorial debut in the fourth version of “A Star is Born”, Bradley Cooper was already consolidated on his acting career: he was nominated for 3 Oscars and a Tony Award; he made long-lasting partnerships with directors such as David O. Russell, Clint Eastwood and Todd Phillips; and had a recurring role in the superhero world as the voice of Rocket Raccoon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a role he plays to this day. When “A Star is Born” premiered in the Venice Film Festival in 2018, every aspect of the film that involved Cooper (acting, directing, producing, writing, and music) was highly acclaimed by critics. And rightfully so, because, just like it happens with Louisa May Alcott's book “Little Women”, which was adapted numerous times into films and TV shows, Cooper proved that the story of “A Star is Born” still has something to say. You can feel his control over the film, especially in the musical performance scenes, which were recorded live from some of the biggest music festivals in the world, and that aspect gives those scenes an intimate, concert-like vibe to these performances. Surprising no one, Cooper was nominated for 3 Oscars because of it: Best Picture, Actor and Adapted Screenplay, and even though he didn't win any of the 3 (and even though he was snubbed in the Best Director category), he got more recognition for his work on the director's chair, and was nominated for an Oscar one more time for his production in “Joker”. With his next film being a musical or not, being original or not, starring Lady Gaga or not, I'm already invested in Bradley Cooper's career.)

(OLIVIA WILDE (Films in her resumé: “Booksmart” (2019); Next project as director: “Don't Worry Darling” (Date to be announced))

(Just like Bradley Cooper, Olivia Wilde already had a consolidated career as an actress: she had recurring roles in shows like “The O.C.” and “House”, and starred in films like “Tron: Legacy” (2010), “Cowboys & Aliens” (2011) and “In Time” (2011). When “Booksmart”, Wilde's directorial debut, premiered on the South By Southwest Festival, the critics, without a hint of hesitation, acclaimed the film as one of the best movies of the year, and highlighted Wilde's direction as one of the reasons why the film worked so well. It didn't suprise anyone when “Booksmart” won Wilde the Best First Feature award in the Independent Spirit Awards, which celebrates independent cinema. In her first film, the director already formed a partnership with screenwriter Katie Silberman, who revised the screenplay for “Booksmart” and who is already hired to write the script for Wilde's next film, “Don't Worry Darling”, which is searching up names like Florence Pugh and Dakota Johnson to star in the movie. Just like Bradley Cooper, Olivia Wilde's got a bright future both in front of and behind the cameras, and I just can't wait for her next project.)

  • JOHN KRASINSKI (Filmes no currículo: “Breves Entrevistas com Homens Hediondos” (2009), “Família Hollar” (2016), “Um Lugar Silencioso” (2018); Próximo projeto na direção: “Um Lugar Silencioso – Parte II” (2020))
(JOHN KRASINSKI (Films in his resumé: “Brief Interviews with Hideous Men” (2009), “The Hollars” (2016), “A Quiet Place” (2018); Next project as director: “A Quiet Place – Part II” (2020))

(Now, there's something no one would've expected: Jim from “The Office” as a film director. After directing and starring in two films that didn't get that much recognition from the audience, then entered the masterpiece that is “A Quiet Place”, directed, co-written and starred by Krasinski. And what an evolution he suffered from “The Office” to this. You can see that he has complete control over what he's doing, from the sound design to the visual effects of this 2018 horror film. It wasn't a surprise when two of the biggest film institutions in the US, the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute, named “A Quiet Place” as one of the 10 best films of 2018. It's a movie that gives you the feeling that you're watching a blockbuster, yet it still has a strong emotional core. And what a dedication that Krasinski had making this film, to the point of getting the entire cast to learn sign language for them to easily enter their characters. There's no doubt that “A Quiet Place” is one of the most original horror films in recent times, and, according to the initial reactions to the sequel, which had its world premiere in New York before the coronavirus pandemic, it looks like Krasinski will have another success in his hands with “A Quiet Place – Part II”, where he will reprise his role as director, writer and actor.)

(GRETA GERWIG (Films in her resumé: “Nights and Weekends” (2008), “Lady Bird” (2017), and “Little Women” (2019); Next project as director: Unknown at the moment)

(And to wrap it up on a high note, we have Greta Gerwig, who started off as an actress in a genre known as mumblecore, characterized by its natural dialogue, shoestring budgets, bigger importance on dialogue over plot, and a focus on personal relationships between people in their 20s and 30s. After creating a 3-film partnership with director Joe Swanberg, with whom she co-directed “Nights and Weekends”, Gerwig consolidated a partnership with her future husband, Noah Baumbach, with whom she wrote “Frances Ha” (2012) and “Mistress America” (2015). Two years later, in 2017, Gerwig would dominate every conversation in the Telluride Film Festival with the premiere of her solo directorial debut, “Lady Bird”, which was highly acclaimed, and gave the director 2 Oscar nominations: Best Original Screenplay and Best Director, making her the fifth woman to be nominated for the latter. I watched a video at the movie's release window that showed Gerwig guiding actors Saoirse Ronan and Lucas Hedges through the shooting of a scene and I found her method to be pretty natural and fascinating. Two years after the success of “Lady Bird”, Gerwig helmed the latest adaptation of “Little Women”, which nominated her for the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. She says that her next project may be a musical with tap dancing, which is a pretty interesting concept, and I hope she moves forward with this proposal. Just like Jordan Peele, Greta Gerwig is one of the most original and interesting voices in modern-day cinema, and it won't be long for her to get the Oscar she deserves.)

(What's up, my dear film buffs! How are you guys doing? I'm back, in order to talk about a miniseries that was recently released in Netflix's original catalog. Written by Jack Thorne (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child), produced by Damien Chazelle (director of La La Land), and with original songs composed by Glen Ballard and Randy Kerber, this miniseries celebrates the cultural diversity in the 21st century Paris. So, without further ado, let's talk about “The Eddy”. Let's go!)

(“The Eddy” tells the story of Elliot Udo (André Holland), who owns a jazz club in Paris called The Eddy. With the unexpected visit of his distant daughter, Julie (Amandla Stenberg), shocking events begin to jeopardize the club's future.)

Vamos começar falando do roteiro.
(I believe that I felt attracted by this miniseries for the same reason as many people did: because of the fact that it was produced by Damien Chazelle, the Oscar-winning director of “La La Land”, who helms two of this project's 8 episodes. And by reading its synopsis, which has a jazz club in its core, you can see that the story fits Chazelle's filmmaking style. But here's an early warning: if you're expecting this series to have the same vibe as “La La Land”, where characters, out of nowhere, start singing and dancing wherever they are, this may not be the show for you. “The Eddy” is much more similar to “Whiplash” than “La La Land”, in terms of tone. Instead of being a full-fledged musical with well-produced musical numbers and well-rehearsed choreography, this miniseries is a family drama with a little bit of thriller thrown into the mix that uses music to move the plot forward and to make the story's message easier to comprehend. Let's start with the script. I have never seen a bad Jack Thorne script. He's a fantastic writer, for both movies (“Wonder”) and TV shows (“His Dark Materials”), and “The Eddy”, fortunately, is not an exception. One of the biggest pros in the script is the decision of dedicating each episode to one of the plot's crucial characters, while also developing the other subplots in a palatable, comprehensible way. This results in a plot that's not as complex as it sounds, with really well-developed characters, who gain the viewer's sympathy throughout the season. Due to this decision, some viewers might feel that the story has a slower pace, but those who possess the patience to watch all 8 50-minute episodes will be richly rewarded in the end. It can be said that “The Eddy” wishes to transmit a lot of messages, and the ones I could get were transmitted in a really comprehensible way: it celebrates the cultural diversity of Paris, which means that every character has their own personal story to tell, and at least for me, that was very touching; and it also deals with the power that music has to unite people and overcome every obstacle that may stop the unity of those people. It may sound a little cliché, but believe me, this miniseries is able to emotionally move its viewers through these messages. With a well-written script, and really well-developed characters, “The Eddy” is just another proof of how good Netflix is in creating contained episodic plots with quality, after the successes of “When They See Us”, “Maniac” and “The Haunting of Hill House”.)

(Just like its screenwriter, the cast of “The Eddy” is extraordinarily talented. In the main roles, we have André Holland and Amandla Stenberg as father and daughter, and they are both great here, especially Stenberg, who has matured a lot since her short, but significant role in “The Hunger Games” as Rue. It won't be a surprise if she ends up being nominated for awards because of this performance, which, in my opinion, is the best one she had to offer so far. In recurring roles, we have Joanna Kulig, a Polish actress who won my heart over with “Cold War”, and captured me even more with this role; and Leïla Bekthi, a French actress who plays a crucial role for the development of Holland's character. As the club's band members, we have really good performances by Damian Nueva Cortes, Lada Obradovic, Randy Kerber, Ludovic Louis and Jowee Omicil, but the most memorable performances in this supporting cast belong to Cortes and Obradovic. The personal stories of both these characters are extremely touching and it's almost impossible not to feel sympathy for them. At last, but not least, we have Adil Dehbi, who plays the club's bartender, and he has an excellent chemistry with Stenberg, which makes us wish for them to become a couple by the end of the plot.)

(Just like it happened with Damien Chazelle's previous projects, the technical aspects are practically flawless. The cinematography has some very elaborate continued shots, which reflects the already iconic opening sequence of “La La Land”, and I thought that was pretty cool. The art direction bets on darker, grayer tones rather than the vibrant colors in other Paris-set projects, with the objective of showing something that's more realistic, and the show does so perfectly. It's a really well-directed plot, not only by Chazelle, but also by French director Houda Benyamina, Morrocan director Laïla Marrakchi and American director Alan Poul, and all of them move the plot forward in a very organic way, which only reinforces the cultural diversity message that the show wishes to transmit. Glen Ballard and Randy Kerber's score is Oscar-worthy. It's almost entirely composed by original jazz songs, and all of them would've been worthy of being played in Seb's, the jazz club owned by Sebastian, one of the main characters in “La La Land”. And one detail that left me shocked was the actors' musical abilities, as they are extremely talented, both in acting, as explained above, and in the instruments that every character plays. Seriously, I won't be surprised if these “actors” were actually professional musicians who played the role of an actor for this show.)

(In a nutshell, “The Eddy” is just another proof of how good Netflix is in creating quality miniseries. It's a well-written show, with well-developed characters, an extraordinarily talented cast, and practically flawless technical aspects. But, above all, “The Eddy” is a celebration of the cultural diversity in the City of Lights, and a reminder of the power that music has to unite people.

I give it a 9,5 out of 10!

That's it, guys! I hope you liked it! See you next time,

(What's up, my dear film buffs! How are you guys doing? I'm back, in order to deliver the second and final part of my #StayHome post, this time talking about TV shows (some are well known, others not that much) to watch during this period of social isolation. Again, I reinforce the fact that, just like the films, the shows I'll list do not deal with sensitive themes or are about epidemics or diseases. They are shows that I consider to be good, some are light, others not that much. So, let's begin!)

  • DERRY GIRLS (2018-presente, Netflix, 2 temporadas, 12 episódios)
(DERRY GIRLS (2018-present, Netflix, 2 seasons, 12 episodes)

(Let's start with a show that isn't that well-known by Netflix subscribers. Produced by Channel 4 (which also produced the Netflix Originals “Black Mirror” and “The End of the F***ing World”), “Derry Girls” follows 5 teenagers (4 girls and one boy) living in the period known as “The Troubles” in Northern Ireland, where the Protestant population (majority) wanted to preserve its connection with Britain, and on the other side, the Catholic population wishing for independence or integration with the Republic of Ireland, whose inhabitants were mostly Catholic. I heard of this show when I read an article on the Internet that said that Jodie Whittaker (protagonist of Doctor Who, my favorite show) would like to be in an episode of “Derry Girls”. So, I started watching it on Netflix. And, indeed, it's an amazing show. The script's sense of humor is razor-sharp, like most British comedies; the characters are very well developed, and you actually care about them, which is important, when it comes to a TV show. It's a great story about growing up and friendship, and, even though it's not among the most popular Netflix shows, I guarantee you will not regret devouring this hidden gem's two seasons.)

  • FLEABAG (2016-2019, Amazon Prime Video, 2 temporadas, 12 episódios)
(FLEABAG (2016-2019, Amazon Prime Video, 2 seasons, 12 episodes)

(I'll start off by stating a fact: Phoebe Waller-Bridge is a genius. Most people heard of this show because of its highly awarded second season. But I became a huge fan of “Fleabag” since the very first moment the protagonist turned to the camera, breaking the fourth wall. Just like “Derry Girls”, Waller-Bridge's sense of humor is acid, sarcastic, and razor-sharp. But the most interesting fact about “Fleabag” is that, even though it's a really funny comedy series, it carries a very strong emotional baggage. The protagonist's character development throughout the series is amazing to behold. When she laughs, we laugh with her. When she cries, we cry with her. And Waller-Bridge, besides acting as showrunner and writer for the series, knocks it out of the park in the main role, perfectly balancing the protagonist's wit and emotional weaknesses. The supporting cast, composed by Sian Clifford, Olivia Colman, Brett Gelman, Bill Paterson and Andrew Scott, also does a wonderful job, resulting in a deeper development for its protagonist, and in lots of laughs throughout its 12 episodes. One of the best comedies in recent times, and maybe one of the best TV shows of all time, “Fleabag” is a comedy masterpiece that surely will not be forgotten that soon.)

  • KILLING EVE (2018-presente, Globoplay, 2 temporadas, 16 episódios)
(KILLING EVE (2018-present, BBC America, 2 seasons, 16 episodes)

(Another show produced by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, “Killing Eve” tells the story of Eve Polastri (Sandra Oh), an investigator for the British Secret Service who is assigned to capture the assassin Villanelle (Jodie Comer). Throughout the story, they start to build a mutual obsession for each other. This show about espionage is different from everything I've ever seen in the investigation genre. Starting with the script, which introduces and develops its characters in a gradual, intriguing way, which makes the viewer thirsty for more episodes. Then, we have the cast, led by Oh and Comer, and both of them are simply amazing. Oh's character starts off in one way, and by the end of the season, she's almost like another person, because of the characters's great development. And we have Jodie Comer, who, let's be honest here, is the queen of the show. She is funny, childish, sadistic, sarcastic, completely bonkers, and she deserved every award she won throughout these two seasons. In great supporting roles, we have Fiona Shaw and Kim Bodnia, and they mostly collaborate for the main characters' development. With a captivating, tense script, and led by an amazingly talented cast, “Killing Eve” is a sensational spy thriller. And if I were you, I'd binge-watch the whole thing, because Season 3 is about to arrive, on April 12.)

  • PENNY DREADFUL (2014-2016, Globoplay, 3 temporadas, 27 episódios)
    (PENNY DREADFUL (2014-2016, 3 seasons, 27 episodes)

(“Penny Dreadful” is the closest we have to some sort of “audiovisual poetry”. It's a gothic horror TV series that makes use of classic horror literature characters (Frankenstein, Dorian Gray, Drácula, among others) to tell the story of Vanessa Ives (Eva Green), a woman who, along with Malcolm Murray (Timothy Dalton) and Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett), battles supernatural forces. The scripts written by John Logan (a 3-time Oscar nominee) are captivating, tense, and, indeed, poetic. One of the best things about the script are the surprises it holds, and trust me, some of them are truly jawdropping. The characters are extremely well-developed throughout the series. And the cast is a particular wonder. Starting with Eva Green, who plays one of her best roles here. The emotions she can convey are something we didn't see much in her cinema work, it's otherworldly. I still don't know why she didn't win main awards (Emmy or Golden Globe) for this role. The supporting cast is really talented, with names like Timothy Dalton, Josh Hartnett, Reeve Carney, Harry Treadaway, Rory Kinnear, Helen McCrory, and Billie Piper. The production design does a wonderful job in portraying a cold, dark, not that friendly Victorian London. Filled with terror, poetry, and well developed characters, “Penny Dreadful” is one of the best shows in recent times. That's a fact.)

  • HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER (2005-2014, Amazon Prime Video, 9 temporadas, 208 episódios)
(HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER (2005-2014, 9 seasons, 208 episodes)

Aí, comecei a assistir a série do início.
(There may be people who say that “How I Met Your Mother” is a cheap copy of “Friends”, but I respectfully disagree. Starting with the story, which consists of a man, Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor, with Bob Saget narrating in voice-over in 2030), telling his children the story of how he and his wife met. And in the middle of that story, he goes through several situations with his friends Marshall (Jason Segel), Lily (Alyson Hannigan), Barney (Neil Patrick Harris), and Robin (Cobie Smulders) in New York City. To be honest, I never showed any interest in watching this series until I heard that Katy Perry (who I was in love with at age 12) made a special participation in one of the episodes. So, I watched just that episode, without knowing about the story as a whole, and I remember liking it a lot. Several years later, I noticed it was available on Netflix. So, I started watching it from the beginning. And to this day, there wasn't a single comedy series that surpassed this one as the best comedy series for me (haven't finished The Office yet, which is also really good). It's such a captivating story, it has a nice balance between comedy and drama (there were a few episodes where I almost cried), and, just like all the other shows I mentioned above, it has really well developed characters. The cast is simply amazing, and works really well with what the script has to offer. What else needs to be said? “How I Met Your Mother” is a modern classic in American comedy, and I guarantee that, if you give it a chance, the journey will be legen-wait for it-dary!)

  • CAÇADORES DE TROLLS: CONTOS DA ARCADIA (2016-2018, Netflix, 3 temporadas, 52 episódios) e OS 3 LÁ EMBAIXO: CONTOS DA ARCADIA (2018-2019, Netflix, 2 temporadas, 26 episódios)
(TROLLHUNTERS: TALES OF ARCADIA (2016-2018, Netflix, 3 seasons, 52 episodes) and 3 BELOW: TALES OF ARCADIA (2018-2019, Netflix, 2 seasons, 26 episodes)

(A fun alternative for the kids, the “Tales of Arcadia” franchise was created by none other than Guillermo del Toro (who directed “Pan's Labyrinth” and Best Picture-winner “The Shape of Water”), and as it belongs to the director's characteristic genre, there's literally no way these shows could be bad. On the contrary, I dare to say these are the best works of animation Netflix has made so far. “Trollhunters” tells the story of Jim Lake, Jr., who is chosen by an amulet to be the protector of a race of trolls that live on the undergrounds of the city he lives in. “3 Below” is a direct sequel to the story of “Trollhunters”, so I recommend watching “Trollhunters” before watching “3 Below”. How to begin describing this franchise? Well, first, it's made in association with DreamWorks (“Shrek” and “Madagascar”), so, visually, these shows are delightful to the eye. Secondly, this is Guillermo del Toro we're talking about here, so, the “Tales of Arcadia” franchise has a really rich mythology. Characters are shared between the two shows, as they are set in the same fictional universe, and one aspect of a show collaborates with one from the other, in order to, together, build one single epic story, to be concluded through a third show, titled “Wizards”, to premiere in the second semester. And the sense of humor isn't silly, as it usually is with kids's shows these days, the franchise has a universal approach, it's suitable for all ages. Both shows are fun, funny, magical and visually vibrant. And they may serve as an introduction for younger film buffs to del Toro's work, so that, when they grow up, they are able to watch the live-action masterpieces of this amazing director.)

  • LEMONY SNICKET: DESVENTURAS EM SÉRIE (2017-2019, Netflix, 3 temporadas, 25 episódios)
(LEMONY SNICKET'S A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS (2017-2019, Netflix, 3 seasons, 25 episodes)

(Several Netflix original shows, sometimes, can go unnoticed by most of the audience. Shows like “Stranger Things” and “Money Heist” are well known by Netflix subscribers, and it breaks my heart that this adaptation of Lemony Snicket's work didn't reach the same level of attention as the shows cited above. Because it should've reached. After a failed attempt of creating a movie franchise, starting with the 2004 film, which adapted the first 3 books; the TV adaptation made the best choice: split one book into two 45-minute episodes, for the story to breathe and, mainly, for the source material to be adapted in a more faithful way. And it worked perfectly. If compared to the movie, the show is a much more developed adaptation, in terms of plot. Just like in the books, the episodes follow a formula, but it's the small differences applied to that formula that make every chapter in the Baudelaires' story unique. Just like “Tales of Arcadia”, Lemony Snicket's work has a very rich mythology, and, if the viewer surrenders to the show's peculiarities, I assure that he will be greatly rewarded with the result. The cast has an amazing characterization, comparing with the illustrations in the books. Neil Patrick Harris is incredible as Count Olaf, perfectly balancing humor and threat. Malina Weissman, Louis Hynes and Presley Smith are also really good as the Baudelaire orphans, they gain our trust and compassion in every unfortunate event they go through. And another highlight is Patrick Warburton's narration as Lemony Snicket, which is a particular wonder. Visually, it is astonishing, every environment in the books has its own identity, and that's visible through the wonderful work by the production design team. One of the best original Netflix productions, in my opinion, “A Series of Unfortunate Events” unites a clever script with a talented cast in order to deliver a story that does justice to its source material, as every adaptation should be.)

Então, é isso, pessoal! Espero que tenham gostado! Até a próxima,
