(What's up, my dear film buffs! How are you guys doing? I'm back, in order to deliver the second and final part of my #StayHome post, this time talking about TV shows (some are well known, others not that much) to watch during this period of social isolation. Again, I reinforce the fact that, just like the films, the shows I'll list do not deal with sensitive themes or are about epidemics or diseases. They are shows that I consider to be good, some are light, others not that much. So, let's begin!)

  • DERRY GIRLS (2018-presente, Netflix, 2 temporadas, 12 episódios)
(DERRY GIRLS (2018-present, Netflix, 2 seasons, 12 episodes)

(Let's start with a show that isn't that well-known by Netflix subscribers. Produced by Channel 4 (which also produced the Netflix Originals “Black Mirror” and “The End of the F***ing World”), “Derry Girls” follows 5 teenagers (4 girls and one boy) living in the period known as “The Troubles” in Northern Ireland, where the Protestant population (majority) wanted to preserve its connection with Britain, and on the other side, the Catholic population wishing for independence or integration with the Republic of Ireland, whose inhabitants were mostly Catholic. I heard of this show when I read an article on the Internet that said that Jodie Whittaker (protagonist of Doctor Who, my favorite show) would like to be in an episode of “Derry Girls”. So, I started watching it on Netflix. And, indeed, it's an amazing show. The script's sense of humor is razor-sharp, like most British comedies; the characters are very well developed, and you actually care about them, which is important, when it comes to a TV show. It's a great story about growing up and friendship, and, even though it's not among the most popular Netflix shows, I guarantee you will not regret devouring this hidden gem's two seasons.)

  • FLEABAG (2016-2019, Amazon Prime Video, 2 temporadas, 12 episódios)
(FLEABAG (2016-2019, Amazon Prime Video, 2 seasons, 12 episodes)

(I'll start off by stating a fact: Phoebe Waller-Bridge is a genius. Most people heard of this show because of its highly awarded second season. But I became a huge fan of “Fleabag” since the very first moment the protagonist turned to the camera, breaking the fourth wall. Just like “Derry Girls”, Waller-Bridge's sense of humor is acid, sarcastic, and razor-sharp. But the most interesting fact about “Fleabag” is that, even though it's a really funny comedy series, it carries a very strong emotional baggage. The protagonist's character development throughout the series is amazing to behold. When she laughs, we laugh with her. When she cries, we cry with her. And Waller-Bridge, besides acting as showrunner and writer for the series, knocks it out of the park in the main role, perfectly balancing the protagonist's wit and emotional weaknesses. The supporting cast, composed by Sian Clifford, Olivia Colman, Brett Gelman, Bill Paterson and Andrew Scott, also does a wonderful job, resulting in a deeper development for its protagonist, and in lots of laughs throughout its 12 episodes. One of the best comedies in recent times, and maybe one of the best TV shows of all time, “Fleabag” is a comedy masterpiece that surely will not be forgotten that soon.)

  • KILLING EVE (2018-presente, Globoplay, 2 temporadas, 16 episódios)
(KILLING EVE (2018-present, BBC America, 2 seasons, 16 episodes)

(Another show produced by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, “Killing Eve” tells the story of Eve Polastri (Sandra Oh), an investigator for the British Secret Service who is assigned to capture the assassin Villanelle (Jodie Comer). Throughout the story, they start to build a mutual obsession for each other. This show about espionage is different from everything I've ever seen in the investigation genre. Starting with the script, which introduces and develops its characters in a gradual, intriguing way, which makes the viewer thirsty for more episodes. Then, we have the cast, led by Oh and Comer, and both of them are simply amazing. Oh's character starts off in one way, and by the end of the season, she's almost like another person, because of the characters's great development. And we have Jodie Comer, who, let's be honest here, is the queen of the show. She is funny, childish, sadistic, sarcastic, completely bonkers, and she deserved every award she won throughout these two seasons. In great supporting roles, we have Fiona Shaw and Kim Bodnia, and they mostly collaborate for the main characters' development. With a captivating, tense script, and led by an amazingly talented cast, “Killing Eve” is a sensational spy thriller. And if I were you, I'd binge-watch the whole thing, because Season 3 is about to arrive, on April 12.)

  • PENNY DREADFUL (2014-2016, Globoplay, 3 temporadas, 27 episódios)
    (PENNY DREADFUL (2014-2016, 3 seasons, 27 episodes)

(“Penny Dreadful” is the closest we have to some sort of “audiovisual poetry”. It's a gothic horror TV series that makes use of classic horror literature characters (Frankenstein, Dorian Gray, Drácula, among others) to tell the story of Vanessa Ives (Eva Green), a woman who, along with Malcolm Murray (Timothy Dalton) and Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett), battles supernatural forces. The scripts written by John Logan (a 3-time Oscar nominee) are captivating, tense, and, indeed, poetic. One of the best things about the script are the surprises it holds, and trust me, some of them are truly jawdropping. The characters are extremely well-developed throughout the series. And the cast is a particular wonder. Starting with Eva Green, who plays one of her best roles here. The emotions she can convey are something we didn't see much in her cinema work, it's otherworldly. I still don't know why she didn't win main awards (Emmy or Golden Globe) for this role. The supporting cast is really talented, with names like Timothy Dalton, Josh Hartnett, Reeve Carney, Harry Treadaway, Rory Kinnear, Helen McCrory, and Billie Piper. The production design does a wonderful job in portraying a cold, dark, not that friendly Victorian London. Filled with terror, poetry, and well developed characters, “Penny Dreadful” is one of the best shows in recent times. That's a fact.)

  • HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER (2005-2014, Amazon Prime Video, 9 temporadas, 208 episódios)
(HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER (2005-2014, 9 seasons, 208 episodes)

Aí, comecei a assistir a série do início.
(There may be people who say that “How I Met Your Mother” is a cheap copy of “Friends”, but I respectfully disagree. Starting with the story, which consists of a man, Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor, with Bob Saget narrating in voice-over in 2030), telling his children the story of how he and his wife met. And in the middle of that story, he goes through several situations with his friends Marshall (Jason Segel), Lily (Alyson Hannigan), Barney (Neil Patrick Harris), and Robin (Cobie Smulders) in New York City. To be honest, I never showed any interest in watching this series until I heard that Katy Perry (who I was in love with at age 12) made a special participation in one of the episodes. So, I watched just that episode, without knowing about the story as a whole, and I remember liking it a lot. Several years later, I noticed it was available on Netflix. So, I started watching it from the beginning. And to this day, there wasn't a single comedy series that surpassed this one as the best comedy series for me (haven't finished The Office yet, which is also really good). It's such a captivating story, it has a nice balance between comedy and drama (there were a few episodes where I almost cried), and, just like all the other shows I mentioned above, it has really well developed characters. The cast is simply amazing, and works really well with what the script has to offer. What else needs to be said? “How I Met Your Mother” is a modern classic in American comedy, and I guarantee that, if you give it a chance, the journey will be legen-wait for it-dary!)

  • CAÇADORES DE TROLLS: CONTOS DA ARCADIA (2016-2018, Netflix, 3 temporadas, 52 episódios) e OS 3 LÁ EMBAIXO: CONTOS DA ARCADIA (2018-2019, Netflix, 2 temporadas, 26 episódios)
(TROLLHUNTERS: TALES OF ARCADIA (2016-2018, Netflix, 3 seasons, 52 episodes) and 3 BELOW: TALES OF ARCADIA (2018-2019, Netflix, 2 seasons, 26 episodes)

(A fun alternative for the kids, the “Tales of Arcadia” franchise was created by none other than Guillermo del Toro (who directed “Pan's Labyrinth” and Best Picture-winner “The Shape of Water”), and as it belongs to the director's characteristic genre, there's literally no way these shows could be bad. On the contrary, I dare to say these are the best works of animation Netflix has made so far. “Trollhunters” tells the story of Jim Lake, Jr., who is chosen by an amulet to be the protector of a race of trolls that live on the undergrounds of the city he lives in. “3 Below” is a direct sequel to the story of “Trollhunters”, so I recommend watching “Trollhunters” before watching “3 Below”. How to begin describing this franchise? Well, first, it's made in association with DreamWorks (“Shrek” and “Madagascar”), so, visually, these shows are delightful to the eye. Secondly, this is Guillermo del Toro we're talking about here, so, the “Tales of Arcadia” franchise has a really rich mythology. Characters are shared between the two shows, as they are set in the same fictional universe, and one aspect of a show collaborates with one from the other, in order to, together, build one single epic story, to be concluded through a third show, titled “Wizards”, to premiere in the second semester. And the sense of humor isn't silly, as it usually is with kids's shows these days, the franchise has a universal approach, it's suitable for all ages. Both shows are fun, funny, magical and visually vibrant. And they may serve as an introduction for younger film buffs to del Toro's work, so that, when they grow up, they are able to watch the live-action masterpieces of this amazing director.)

  • LEMONY SNICKET: DESVENTURAS EM SÉRIE (2017-2019, Netflix, 3 temporadas, 25 episódios)
(LEMONY SNICKET'S A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS (2017-2019, Netflix, 3 seasons, 25 episodes)

(Several Netflix original shows, sometimes, can go unnoticed by most of the audience. Shows like “Stranger Things” and “Money Heist” are well known by Netflix subscribers, and it breaks my heart that this adaptation of Lemony Snicket's work didn't reach the same level of attention as the shows cited above. Because it should've reached. After a failed attempt of creating a movie franchise, starting with the 2004 film, which adapted the first 3 books; the TV adaptation made the best choice: split one book into two 45-minute episodes, for the story to breathe and, mainly, for the source material to be adapted in a more faithful way. And it worked perfectly. If compared to the movie, the show is a much more developed adaptation, in terms of plot. Just like in the books, the episodes follow a formula, but it's the small differences applied to that formula that make every chapter in the Baudelaires' story unique. Just like “Tales of Arcadia”, Lemony Snicket's work has a very rich mythology, and, if the viewer surrenders to the show's peculiarities, I assure that he will be greatly rewarded with the result. The cast has an amazing characterization, comparing with the illustrations in the books. Neil Patrick Harris is incredible as Count Olaf, perfectly balancing humor and threat. Malina Weissman, Louis Hynes and Presley Smith are also really good as the Baudelaire orphans, they gain our trust and compassion in every unfortunate event they go through. And another highlight is Patrick Warburton's narration as Lemony Snicket, which is a particular wonder. Visually, it is astonishing, every environment in the books has its own identity, and that's visible through the wonderful work by the production design team. One of the best original Netflix productions, in my opinion, “A Series of Unfortunate Events” unites a clever script with a talented cast in order to deliver a story that does justice to its source material, as every adaptation should be.)

(What's up, my dear film buffs! How are you guys doing? I'm back, in order to list some films and TV shows for you to enjoy during the social isolation we're all facing in this moment. My intention is to focus on films and shows that have nothing to do with diseases or epidemic, or that deal with themes that may be sensitive to people. I'll list here films that, in my opinion, are light, fun, and adequate for this delicate time we're living in. So, let's begin!)

FILMES:

  • SING STREET: MÚSICA E SONHO (2016), dirigido por John Carney (Disponível na Netflix)
(SING STREET (2016), directed by John Carney)

(I've already talked about this film several times here, and I'll reinforce the fact that this highly underrated film about a boy that forms a band to impress an older girl is the perfect antidote to the sadness and anxiety that times like these may cause. It's one of those movies that make you feel good about life. The plot set in the 1980s and the very well-developed characters are captivating. The chemistry between all the young cast (Ferdia Walsh-Peelo, Lucy Boynton, Mark McKenna, and more) moves the story in a riveting and very satisfactory way. The soundtrack is really well executed, making use of hits from that time, like Duran Duran, The Cure, The Jam, besides having highly addictive original songs composed by Gary Clark and John Carney, the movie's director. And if that's not enough to convince you to watch this amazing movie, it got so much attention, that it's now going to be adapted for the Broadway stage, from the same team that transformed another film by Carney, the intimate and sublime “Once”, into an award-winning musical.)

  • LA LA LAND: CANTANDO ESTAÇÕES (2016), dirigido por Damien Chazelle (Disponível na Netflix)
(LA LA LAND (2016), directed by Damien Chazelle)

(And we got another wonderful musical on the list. A true homage to cinema and jazz, Damien Chazelle already gets our attention from the spectacular opening number continuously shot in a jammed highway. The energy and effort put into that sequence alone are enough to invite us into Mia and Sebastian's world. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone (who won an Oscar for her role) deliver some of their best performances here. Chazelle's script may seem a little familiar, but it's the tiny differences he applies to that formula that turn “La La Land” into a unique film. Justin Hurwitz's score is simply phenomenal, the original songs composed by Justin Paul and Benj Pasek are amazing, the choreography was very well-rehearsed, the cinematography and the art direction are vibrant and hypnotizing, to the point where it looks like a fantasy, like we're in a dream. And that feeling, for me at least, was one of a kind the first time I watched it. And that ending... To this day, I still think it's unfair it didn't win Best Picture.)

  • MENINAS MALVADAS (2004), dirigido por Mark Waters (Disponível na Amazon Prime Video)
(MEAN GIRLS (2004), directed by Mark Waters)

(When I heard of “Heathers”, which was the subject of the 3 latest posts in the blog, I saw a lot of articles online comparing Michael Lehmann with “Mean Girls”. There are a lot of similarities between both films, even with their tones being the complete opposite of each other. There are several pros in “Mean Girls”, starting with the script, written by Tina Fey. It's a script that has a highly clever, sharp sense of humor, and that humor still works 16 years later. The cast, composed by talents who, at the time, were on the rise (Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried, Lizzy Caplan) is amazing, and all the characters are well developed. A person might think that, because of the title, it is a “chick flick”. Well, I assure you it's not. I honestly loved this film, and it was on my head for many days after I watched it. So, for those seeking a light, extremely funny and feel-good comedy, “Mean Girls” is the movie for you.)

  • SEM FÔLEGO (2017), dirigido por Todd Haynes (Disponível na Amazon Prime Video)
(WONDERSTRUCK (2017), directed by Todd Haynes)

(I bet most of my readers don't even know this film exists, as it wasn't really noticed at its time of release. “Wonderstruck” uses two hearing impaired narrators, Ben and Rose, who are both looking for something. Ben is searching for his father, and Rose is searching for her mother. Then it keeps switching between these two narratives, and, little by little, the script unites these two points of view into a linear timeline. It's a film based on a book by Brian Selznick (the same guy who wrote “The Invention of Hugo Cabret”), who also wrote the adaptation's screenplay. And really, it is a film that leaves you wonderstruck, because it is extremely captivanting. The song “Space Oddity”, by David Bowie, is used here in an intimately symbolic way, the performances by the child actors, especially Millicent Simmonds (who would later be recongnized by a larger audience because of “A Quiet Place”) are amazing. The way that the cinematography and the art direction use to tell the two timelines the movie is set in is a delight to the eye. It is one of the best films I've seen lately, and it is an extremely faithful adaptation to the source material, to the point that scenes are almost identical to the illustrations of the book. It's a film that captures you, captivates you, thrills you, and that leaves your heart warm in the end.)

  • A INCRÍVEL AVENTURA DE RICK BAKER (2016), dirigido por Taika Waititi (Disponível na Netflix)
(HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE (2016), directed by Taika Waititi)

(Most people may remember the name “Taika Waititi” because of “Thor: Ragnarok”, or maybe because of the excellent “Jojo Rabbit”, which won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. But before those two films, Waititi made “Hunt for the Wilderpeople”, an indie film that tells the story of an orphan boy who, after the sudden death of one of his guardians, flees into the woods with his uncle, and end up going viral on a national scale, attracting the attention of the police in the process. Waititi's characteristic sense of humor, established in the hilarious “What We Do in the Shadows”, and reinforced in “Jojo Rabbit”, is present in its most purest form here. Some jokes may seem nonsensical, and yet they're extremely funny. Julian Dennison (who would later, portray one of the villains in “Deadpool 2”) and Sam Neill have a very captivating chemistry, Rachel House (a frequent Waititi collaborator) is hilarious, and the script develops its characters in a really fulfilling way, making us care about them and the journey they're about to make. It is a film that's aesthetically similar to Wes Anderson films, and is full of good laughs, yet it also has a really strong emotional baggage (those who have seen “Jojo Rabbit” will know what I'm talking about), which isn't that common in films promoted as comedies, and Taika Waititi nails it in that aspect in “Hunt for the Wilderpeople”.)

  • MONTY PYTHON EM BUSCA DO CÁLICE SAGRADO (1975), dirigido por Terry Gilliam e Terry Jones (Disponível na Netflix)
(MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL (1975), directed by Terry Gilliam and Terry Jones)

(My favorite comedy film of all time, “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” is the masterpiece of this British comedy troupe, in my opinion. It is a satire of the tale of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, made in the most nonsensical way possible. And it is simply hilarious. The 6 members of the troupe (Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Michael Palin, Terry Jones, Terry Gilliam and Eric Idle) knock it out of the park in every role they play (yes, they play multiple roles here). It's a film with several iconic moments, like the fight against the Black Knight, the Knights Who Say Ni, the fight against the Rabbit of Caerbannog, the Bridge of Death, and it goes further. As it happens with the episodes of their show “Monty Python's Flying Circus”, this film also makes a surreal use of animation, with hilarious results. It's a film that's so funny, you'll want to look for other works by this iconic comedy troupe. Watch “Monty Python and the Holy Grail”, I guarantee you'll not regret it!)

  • SCOTT PILGRIM CONTRA O MUNDO (2010), dirigido por Edgar Wright (Disponível na Netflix)
(SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD (2010), directed by Edgar Wright)

(I say, without fear, that “Scott Pilgrim vs the World” is my favorite comic book adaptation ever, even with shared universes, like Marvel and DC. It is based on a comic book series with 6 volumes, and follows Scott Pilgrim, a slacker bass player who falls in love with Ramona Flowers, an Amazon delivery girl. But, in order to win her heart, he has to defeat her 7 ex-boyfriends. There wasn't a better person to direct this story than Edgar Wright. He takes the visual style he established in the TV show “Spaced” and in films like “Shaun of the Dead” and “Hot Fuzz” and implants them here in a really energetic, identifiable way. The film covers all 6 volumes in the series (meaning that a lot of stuff got left out), but the essence of the plot is maintained. As a matter of fact, some decisions the screenplay made were even better than some in the source material, but we'll leave that to a future post. It's a really funny movie; along with “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”, it's the closest we'll ever get to a comic book in motion; the cast is full of talented names (Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Brie Larson, Chris Evans, Jason Schwartzman) and all of them work really well with their material. There's an efficient, clever use of CGI here, and that use doesn't pollute the film at all, on the contrary, it makes the film's style even more unique. If you like action, comedy, comic books and videogames, you'll love “Scott Pilgrim”.)

  • O FANTÁSTICO SR. RAPOSO (2009), dirigido por Wes Anderson (Disponível na Amazon Prime Video)
(FANTASTIC MR. FOX (2009), directed by Wes Anderson)

(In my opinion, Wes Anderson has never made a bad film. And “Fantastic Mr. Fox” is no exception. An underrated masterpiece of stop-motion animation, Anderson's film shows that animation is so much more than just CGI. Every frame in this animated movie is literally a work of art. It's a film that has every visual and aesthetic characteristics that the director is known for (symmetry, color palette, fast-paced story, soundtrack from the 1960s and 1970s, a story with a family theme), and the stop-motion made here isn't that traditional, like with Aardman (“Chicken Run”). It's something way more sophisticated, more or less on the same level of detail as the films made by LAIKA (“Coraline”). It's a story that both kids and adults can enjoy, it has a juggernaut of a voice cast (George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Jason Schwartzman, Owen Wilson, Bill Murray), and it is so good, that you don't even see the short running time (less than 90 minutes) go by. It's my second favorite Wes Anderson film, my favorite animated film of all time and one of my favorite films of all time. It's a perfect film to introduce film buffs in formation to the work of this amazing director.)

(Greetings and salutations, my dear film buffs! I'm back, in order to deliver the third and final part of this special post on all of the work based on the screenplay for “Heathers”. And in this post, I'll be talking about the black sheep in the “Heathers” catalog, something that was really criticized when it was announced, and gathered a good amount of controversy before its official release. It may not be the same “Heathers” that movie and musical fans wanted, but it's the most relevant, current “Heathers” for the present generation. So, without further ado, let's talk about the 2018 miniseries of “Heathers”. Let's go!)

(Based on the 1988 film, the “Heathers” miniseries transports the plot into the present day, and follows Veronica Sawyer (Grace Victoria Cox), a 17-year-old who's trying to find herself in life. She's the black sheep in a school clique known as “the Heathers”, and because of the evil bullying and manipulation acts committed by the Heathers, Veronica joins forces with a new kid, JD (James Scully), to take the clique out of the school hierarchy.)

(A lot of people, especially fans of the original work, have been criticizing this adaptation in particular, because some of its aspects are different from the 1988 film, especially when it comes to the Heathers's appearances: while in the film, they are skinny queen bees; in the miniseries, Heather Chandler is overweight; Heather Duke is a gay teenager named Heath, but that prefers to be called Heather; and Heather McNamara is black and lesbian. People wondered, when the trailer for the miniseries was released: how could the Heathers manage to become the type of people they criticized in the original film? Could it be a device to make the plot politically correct? Maybe, but I think that the clearest explanation is that school societies have changed from 1988 until today, and the show wanted to apply those changes into the plot of “Heathers”. But there's the bigger problem: most fans didn't even care to actually watch the show to see if any good came out of it. As that's not my case, let's talk about the script. The script for the “Heathers” miniseries was written by Jason Micallef, who was also showrunner, and got a little help from co-writers in 8 of the 10 episodes. I really liked the concept that it had to bring the plot into the present days, to the time where everything goes viral in a matter of seconds on the Internet. And it's precisely because of this setting that makes this adaptation of “Heathers” the most relevant one for today's reality. People are always connected, knowing about everything in an instant or in a click, it really was an aspect that a modern-day version of “Heathers” needed. One thing I really liked in this plot's execution was the number of plot twists (most of them being completely unexpected) it has, if compared to the original script. If you're a fan of the 1988 film or the musical, the plot twists throughout these 10 episodes will make you care with the characters' appearances less and less. Things that happened in the original film may not happen here and vice-versa. It's different, it's violent, I could see why it gathered so much controversy in the US, but the themes it deals with are necessary for the message to be transmitted more clearly. One aspect I particularly enjoyed was the boldness to go beyond the themes discussed in the original film (which are still discussed here) and deal with themes that are way more present in recent times, especially sexual harassment and the domination technology has over our lives. The miniseries has a very current sense of humor, containing jokes about photo filters, pop culture, everything you'd expect from a teen series like “Riverdale” or “Scream Queens”. The script carries a huge amount of mystery on its characters, and also fills some gaps that weren't properly explained in the other properties that carry the “Heathers” name. And the ending of this miniseries is nothing like the original film's ending or the musical's ending. It's something that positively surprised me, especially because of the boldness the show's producers had to make the ending that way.)

O Brendan Scannell me fez rir bastante como a Heather Duke.
(In the cast, we find some of the show's biggest wild cards, but not all of them are that good. Grace Victoria Cox is a good Veronica. She's no Winona Ryder, but I really liked the amount of mystery and some of the attitudes of this Veronica, if compared to other versions of the character. Lots of the plot's surprises have to do with her, but no spoilers here. James Scully is more similar to Movie JD than Musical JD, but the actor doesn't even try to be charismatic. He delivers his lines in the most apathetic way possible, which would be adequate for a psychopath, but he doesn't have the personality that Christian Slater or the musical's writers gave to the character. In the Heathers, we have surprises, both pleasant and unpleasant. Melanie Field is the most well-developed Heather Chandler, in terms of character, in the “Heathers” canon. I really liked her performance. Brendan Scannell made me laugh a lot as Heather Duke. Unlike what happened in the other versions, Heather Duke brings the largest amount of humor into the show. And I confess that Heather McNamara, portrayed by Jasmine Mathews, was a huge letdown for me, if compared to how the character was treated in other versions of the script. The biggest surprise for me was Nikki SooHoo as Betty Finn, Veronica's best friend in the original film and in the miniseries. She has way more personality, charisma and character development than movie Betty. I loved how grownups are portrayed here, as hugely alienated people, who don't care about what happens around them, especially when it comes to Veronica's parents, who always have their eyes glued to a tablet, in every scene they're in. Fans of the original work will be very pleased with the appearances by Shannen Doherty, who played Heather Duke in the 1988 film, and who plays JD's mom here, and we get much more development regarding her mysterious death, which is only mentioned in the movie and in the musical.)

(The technical aspects are what's less problematic about the miniseries. The cinematography is quite dynamic, there's an episode that's entirely under the point of view of one of the characters, which I found to be rather interesting. The art direction mixes the 80s vibe of the film and the musical with something more of a neon tone that communicates more with today perfectly, and does the best it can to make an enormous amount of references to the original film, through the use of color, through the recreation of scenes, lines or takes in the 1988 film, or through the soundtrack, and to tell the truth, these references will be a true delight for the “Heathers” diehards out there. There is a constant use of flashbacks, and I really liked how they managed to differentiate the two settings through the technical aspects. There is an efficient use of practical effects, and the impact of these effects is heightened by the camera movements, which I thought it was pretty cool.)

(In a nutshell, the “Heathers” miniseries is pretty different from everything that was based on Daniel Waters's script, with several plot twists, if compared to the original film, but due to its present-day setting, its dealing of themes discussed both in the 1980 and in the present, and the personality of some of its characters, this ends up being the most relevant version for today. I highly recommend it for the fans of the original film or the musical!

I give it a 9,0 out of 10!!

That's it, guys! I hope you liked it! See you next time,

(Greetings and salutations, my dear film buffs! How are you guys doing? I'm back, in order to continue this special 3-part post about every piece of work that was based on the screenplay of “Heathers”, written by Daniel Waters. So, in this second part, let's talk about a lighter, more adequate version for today's times, but that still holds the same amount of impact as the original work. Let's talk about “Heathers: The Musical”. Let's go!)

(Based on the 1988 film, the musical tells the story of Veronica Sawyer, the black sheep in a school clique of bully mean girls known as “the Heathers”. One day, Veronica meets JD, a Baudelaire-reading new kid who just got transferred from another school. Because of the evil bullying acts committed by the Heathers, Veronica and JD come up with a plan to take the clique out of the school hierarchy.)

(As the plot of the musical is almost the same as the film's, this post will be less of a review of the musical, and more of a comparison between the two pieces of work. (So, if you haven't read my review of the original “Heathers” film, or more importantly, if you haven't watched the movie (which I posted at the end of that review), I recommend you do both those things before continuing to read this post, because there will be SPOILERS, both from the movie and the musical.) As I haven't seen the musical on stage, I intend to divide this post into 3 parts: one paragraph explaining the differences between the musical and the movie, in terms of plot; another paragraph explaining more about the development of the characters; and one last paragraph talking about the soundtrack. So, let's start with the book of the musical. “Heathers” is a pretty peculiar movie to be transformed into a musical. One can barely imagine how can one transform a movie about the banalization of suicide into a musical. But the authors of the adaptation, Laurence O'Keefe and Kevin Murphy, who not only wrote the book, but also all the songs in it, made this musical work in today's times. Firstly, they maintained the plot in the time where the movie was released (meaning that, as it happens with the film, the musical is also set in the 1980s). In second place, they maintained the essence of the original work, with a dark sense of humor that actually works today, and that doesn't get weird. In third place, they gave more importance to characters that didn't make that much of a difference in the original film (but we'll discuss that later). In fourth place, they transformed this story from something more mature to something more “young adult”-ish. It's way more energetic, funny, jovial, enjoyable, and as hard as it may seem, impactful than the film written by Waters. It's an adaptation that takes certain liberties in order to make the plot lighter and more digestible, but it still contains the enormous amount of emotional baggage that a serious subject as suicide carries. And the plot changes (which aren't that many) fix everything in the original movie that would be weird to process today. For example, in the cafeteria scene, where Kurt and Ram intimidate JD: in the film, the issue is settled when JD, out of nowhere, pulls out a gun off his trenchcoat and fires (blanks) in their direction; in the musical, the issue is settled through a slow-motion fight between JD and the two bullies, while Veronica sings a solo expressing her admiration for her future boyfriend because he's fighting people that bullied her. See how everything got lighter and less weird to process? Because of these changes, the musical's plot is something far more adequate for today's times, especially for the post-Columbine generation, which collaborates for an easier comprehension of the story and of the message it wishes to transmit.)

(When it comes to the characters, you can say that the musical develops them in a deeper way, if compared to the film. Starting with Veronica, who here, directions herself to the audience frequently in order to express her feelings and introduce characters. We are like her “diary” in the film. She has funnier, more sarcastic dialogues, and requires a powerful singing voice for the musical performances. And above all, in the musical, she is a protagonist whose personality is more attractive to the viewer than it is in the film. I really liked the changes the musical made to JD, who, in the movie, is a heartless psychopath, and you feel good every time something bad happens to him. Don't be mistaken: he's still a psychopath here, but the plot and the songs in this adaptation allow us to further comprehend his backstory and motivations, besides including a real relationship between him and Veronica, which is different from just seeing him manipulate her. The development of the Heathers was something interesting to see, because, unlike the film, the ghost of Heather Chandler shows up several times after her death by poisoning. And through these appearances, we get to witness very funny, sarcastic dialogues from her. Heather Duke is the one who doesn't have much new things to further her development, it's basically the same as the film, but she gets more sadistic here and becomes the most hateful character in the plot (yes, more than JD). The real new thing here stands with Heather McNamara, who is way more important to the plot, through a solo where she expresses her emotions and feelings towards the “suicide” of her best friend (Heather Chandler) and her ex-boyfriend (Kurt). Another character whose development is far different from the film is Martha Dunnstock, who is Veronica's best friend here, replacing Betty Finn. She has way more personality (in the film, she only has one line of dialogue), and her solo song is heartbreaking. Kurt and Ram have the personality of two goofballs here, and most of the comic relief the musical provides comes from these two characters. The two songs they headline are hilarious.)

(And at last, but not least, let's talk about the aspect that makes a musical a musical: the soundtrack. The soundtrack for “Heathers: The Musical” is composed by original songs written by the writers of the book (Laurence O'Keefe and Kevin Murphy), and most of them follow a genre that's more rock-ish (as the adaptation is promoted as a rock musical). And it's a pretty nice soundtrack. Sure, it's not a “Hamilton” or a “Chicago”, but the contrast between the upbeat sound of the melodies and the dark, adult aspect of the lyrics of some songs is what makes this musical different among an endless quantity of stage musicals. The musical number that starts us off (“Beautiful”) is over 8 minutes long, and it doesn't get boring at any moment. There are more pop-ish songs (“Candy Store”, “Big Fun”), more sentimental songs (“Seventeen”), heart-wrenching “repeated knife-twisting in open wound” songs (“Lifeboat”, “Kindergarten Boyfriend”), songs that make us understand more things about characters (“Freeze Your Brain”), and songs that are primarily there for comic relief (“Blue”, “My Dead Gay Son”). There's a little bit for everyone here. I'll leave a playlist of the complete soundtrack on YouTube for you guys to check it out. It's a work of genius.)

(In a nutshell, “Heathers: The Musical” fixes everything that got weird to process in the original film today, transforming the plot into something lighter and easier to digest, but that still maintains the emotional weight of a serious subject like suicide. The adaptation manages to develop its characters in a deeper way, both through dialogue and the genius soundtrack. Someone, please, make a movie out of this musical!

I give it a 10 out of 10!!

That's it, guys! I hope you liked it! See you tomorrow, with the third and final part in this post!
