da animação moderna. Não é uma série extensa, mas em 10
episódios, ela consegue ser divertida, engraçada, assustadora e
muito, muito tocante. Então, sem mais delongas, vamos falar sobre a
fantástica minissérie “Over the Garden Wall”. Vamos lá!

I'm back, and I come with the review of a masterpiece in modern
animation. It's not a large series, but in 10 episodes, it manages to
be engaging, funny, scary, and very, very touching. So, without
further ado, let's talk about the fantastic miniseries “Over the
Garden Wall”. Let's go!)
Eu já escrevi sobre
Over the Garden Wall aqui no blog em 2014, mas venho trazer uma
análise mais extensa com essa resenha. Pra quem ainda não sabe (ou
não se lembra), a minissérie conta a história de Wirt (voz de
Elijah Wood) e Greg (voz de Collin Dean), dois irmãos que se
encontram perdidos em um lugar conhecido como o Desconhecido, onde
contam com a ajuda de Beatrice (voz de Melanie Lynskey), um pássaro
azul falante, para voltar para casa, tudo enquanto tentam escapar da
temida Besta (voz de Samuel Ramey).
(I've already written
about Over the Garden Wall here in the blog, back in 2014, but I,
now, want to make a more extense analysis with this review. To those
who don't know yet (or don't remember), the miniseries tells the
story of Wirt (voiced by Elijah Wood) and Greg (voiced by Collin
Dean), two brothers who find themselves lost in a place known as the
Unknown, where they are aided by Beatrice (voiced by Melanie
Lynskey), a talking bluebird, in order for them to return home, all
while trying to escape the fearsome Beast (voiced by Samuel Ramey).)
Deixe-me começar
dizendo que a minissérie tem um pouco de tudo: comédia, drama,
suspense, romance, e até números musicais bem divertidos. A fusão
de todos esses gêneros faz de Over the Garden Wall uma experiência
extremamente agradável para todos os tipos de público: meninos e
meninas, crianças e adultos. A história é muito bem trabalhada, e
gostaria muito de saber como o Patrick McHale (criador da minissérie)
a bolou, porque ela flui de uma maneira entendível e contínua,
dando ao espectador o desejo ardente de ver o próximo capítulo.
McHale, que trabalhou em séries como “Hora de Aventura” e “As
Trapalhadas de Flapjack”, usa tudo o que ele aprendeu e eleva ao
quadrado em “Over the Garden Wall”, entregando uma história
premiada pelo Emmy que não é confusa, não é tão extensa, e que
consegue agradar e intrigar a todos que assistem, e isso é uma
tremenda realização pra uma só pessoa, o que precisa ser
reconhecido.
(Let me start by saying
that it has a bit of everything: comedy, drama, suspense, romance and
even pretty fun musical numbers. The fusion of all those genres makes
Over the Garden Wall an extremely pleasant experience to all kinds of
audiences: boys and girls, children and adults. The story is very
well developed, and I would like to know how Patrick McHale (creator
of the miniseries) made it up, because it flows in an understandable,
continuous way, giving the viewer a burning desire to check out the
next chapter. McHale, who worked in TV shows like “Adventure Time”
and “The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack”, uses everything he
learned and elevates it to new heights in “Over the Garden Wall”,
delivering an Emmy-winning story that isn't confusing, isn't too
extense, and that manages to please and intrigue everyone who watches
it, and that is a tremendous fulfillment for just one person, which
must be recognized.)
O elenco de vozes é
composto de grandes nomes na indústria cinematográfica, como Elijah
Wood (O Senhor dos Anéis), Melanie Lynskey (Almas Gêmeas),
Christopher Lloyd (De Volta para o Futuro), Tim Curry (The Rocky
Horror Picture Show) e John Cleese (Monty Python), e todos eles
trabalham muito bem. Mesmo sendo adulto, Wood consegue transmitir bem
as angústias e incertezas que um adolescente sofre, em sua
performance como Wirt; assim como Collin Dean consegue injetar em
Greg uma inocência de dar inveja, completo com uma ingenuidade muito
fofa, o que irá certamente atrair os mais pequenos para assistir a
série. Melanie Lynskey trabalha maravilhosamente como Beatrice,
possuindo uma química inegável com o personagem de Wood, uma
química que juntou Wood e Lynskey novamente no filme da Netflix “Eu
Já Não Me Sinto Mais em Casa Nesse Mundo”. Os personagens de
Lloyd e Curry são ameaçadores na medida certa, assim como a Besta
de Samuel Ramey, que possui uma aura sinistra em toda cena que ela
está presente. “Over the Garden Wall” é uma das animações com
o maior número de talento reunido no elenco nos tempos atuais, e
isso é fato.
(The voice cast is
composed by big names in the movie industry, like Elijah Wood (The
Lord of the Rings), Melanie Lynskey (Heavenly Creatures), Christopher
Lloyd (Back to the Future), Tim Curry (The Rocky Horror Picture Show)
and John Cleese (Monty Python), and all of them work really well.
Even as a grown-up, Wood manages to transmit well the anguishes and
uncertainties a teenager suffers, in his performance as Wirt; just
like Collin Dean succeeds in injecting Greg with a perfect childhood
innocence, along with a really cute naivety, which will certainly
attract the youngest into watching the show. Melanie Lynskey works
wonderfully as Beatrice, possessing some undeniable chemistry with
Wood's character, a chemistry that brought Wood and Lynskey together
again in the Netflix movie “I Don't Feel At Home in This World
Anymore”. Lloyd and Curry's characters are threatening in a certain
measure, as is Samuel Ramey's Beast, who conjures a sinister
atmosphere in every scene it's in. “Over the Garden Wall” is one
of the animated shows with the largest number of talent gathered in a
cast in recent times, and that is a fact.)
Agora, vamos ao
destaque da minissérie: os aspectos técnicos. A começar pelo
visual: “Over the Garden Wall” pode muito bem ser a série
animada mais visualmente bem feita que eu já vi. O visual trabalha
muito com um tema de outono (já que nos EUA, a minissérie estreou
na época do Halloween), com folhas caindo, plantações de abóboras,
e um tom mais vintage e vitoriano para os figurinos e cenários.
Vários frames da minissérie são tão lindos, mas tão lindos, que
podem servir de wallpaper no PC de alguém facilmente. Outro aspecto
em que “Over the Garden Wall” acerta em cheio é na trilha
sonora. Há vários momentos musicais nessa série, alguns
inesperados, alguns inusitados, e alguns adequados, e todos são
bons, grudando na cabeça que nem chiclete (Oh, potatoes and
molasses...). A animação é inteiramente desenhada à mão em 2D,
pra mim o melhor jeito de animar uma série do estilo de “Over the
Garden Wall” (“Gravity Falls” tá aí pra provar), o que cai
como uma luva para Patrick McHale e cia, porque é uma série
simples, sem nenhum motivo para recorrer à computação gráfica, o
que poderia seriamente arruinar os traços dos personagens e dos
cenários. Resumindo, tecnicamente, “Over the Garden Wall” é
impecável, contando com uma trilha sonora viciante, um visual
magnífico, e animação tradicional que combina muito com o estilo
da minissérie.
(Now, let's get to the
highlight of the miniseries: the technical aspects. Starting with the
visuals: “Over the Garden Wall” may, very well, be the best
animated show I've ever seen, visually. It works with a fall-ish
theme (as it premiered on October, Halloween time), with falling
leaves, pumpkin fields, and a more vintage, Victorian tone to the
costumes and sets. Several frames in the miniseries are so beautiful,
they would easily fit as a wallpaper for someone's computer. Another
aspect that “Over the Garden Wall” succeeds in is the soundtrack.
There are several musical moments in the show, some unexpected, some
unusual, and some adequate, and they're all good ones, with their
choruses sticking to our heads like chewing gum (Oh, potatoes and
molasses...). The animation is entirely hand-drawn in 2D, which is,
for me, the best way to animate a series in its style (Gravity Falls
is there to prove it), and that fits like a glove for Patrick McHale
and his crew, because it's a simple series, with no reason to run to
CGI, which could really ruin the traces of the characters and the
scenarios. In a nutshell, technically, “Over the Garden Wall” is
flawless, with a catchy soundtrack, magnificent visuals, and
traditional animation that fits the style of the miniseries.)
Uma coisa que vem se
popularizando em desenhos atuais são os easter eggs, segredos de
outras séries ou talvez da própria série escondidos para que os
espectadores achem. Há vários deles aqui, então, na segunda vez
que assistirem “Over the Garden Wall”, prestem atenção nos
vários detalhes que a série deixa, especialmente nos dois últimos
episódios, que estão recheados de easter eggs do início da
história.
(One thing that's
becoming popular in recent cartoons is the use of easter eggs,
secrets belonging to other shows or, maybe, to the show they are in,
hidden for the viewers to find. There are several of them here, so in
the second time you get to watch “Over the Garden Wall”, pay
attention to the many details the series leaves, especially in the
last two episodes, which are filled with easter eggs connecting to
the beginning of the story.)
Resumindo, “Over the
Garden Wall” é uma minissérie muito bem escrita e tecnicamente
impecável, que junta um elenco que esbanja talento com uma trilha
sonora viciante, para contar uma história que você talvez não
esquecerá tão cedo!
