E aí, meus caros
cinéfilos! Tudo bem com vocês? Estou de volta, para trazer a
crítica de um filme necessário na época que estamos enfrentando
hoje. Não porque ele aborda temas muito presentes (apesar de trazer
uma mensagem bem bonita), mas porque a atmosfera dele cria um
contraste muito necessário com a desesperada e bagunçada realidade
em que estamos vivendo agora. Então, sem mais delongas, vamos falar
sobre “Stargirl”. Vamos lá!
(What's up, my dear
film buffs! How are you guys doing? I'm back, in order to review a
film that's necessary in these times we're facing today. Not because
it deals with really recent themes (although it brings a rather
beautiful message), but because its atmosphere creates a much needed
contrast with the desperate, messy reality we're living in right now.
So, without further ado, let's talk about “Stargirl”. Let's go!)
Baseado no livro “A
Extraordinária Garota Chamada Estrela”, escrito por Jerry
Spinelli, o filme conta a história de Leo (interpretado por Graham
Verchere), um menino de 16 anos que vive com a mãe viúva
(interpretada por Darby Stanchfield) em uma pacata cidade no estado
do Arizona, nos EUA. Certo dia, sua vida vira de cabeça para baixo
quando uma garota otimista e de espírito-livre, Stargirl
(interpretada por Grace VanderWaal), é transferida para a sua escola
e começa a mudar todos dentro dela.
(Based on the novel of
the same name, written by Jerry Spinelli, the film tells the story of
Leo (portrayed by Graham Verchere), a 16-year-old boy who lives with
his widowed mother (portrayed by Darby Stanchfield) in a quiet town
in the state of Arizona, in the US. One day, his life turns upside
down when an optimistic, free-spirited girl, Stargirl (portrayed by
Grace VanderWaal), gets transferred to his school and starts to
change everyone in it.)
Quando ouvi falar desse
filme, nunca tinha ouvido falar do livro em que ele foi baseado, mas
acredito que ele capturou minha atenção pelo mesmo motivo que
muitas pessoas: o fato da personagem-título ter sido interpretada
pela Grace VanderWaal, que foi a vencedora do programa America's Got
Talent em 2016. E, mesmo não tendo lido o livro, posso ver porque
VanderWaal foi escalada para esse papel. Mas, agora, vamos falar do
roteiro. Não há nada de relativamente novo ou original aqui. Esse é
um daqueles filmes que o espectador sabe exatamente para onde o
enredo vai, mas o diferencial dele é o charme, algo que esse filme
tem de sobra, graças ao carisma dos atores. Os personagens são bem
desenvolvidos, mesmo com alguns recebendo mais reconhecimento do que
outros. O roteiro faz com que nós venhamos a nos importar com os
protagonistas (Leo e Stargirl) em seus primeiros momentos de tela.
Isso porque, assim como a maioria dos filmes ambientados em escolas,
o tema frequente do bullying é abordado aqui, de forma bem
superficial, mas eficiente. Eu realmente gostei da caracterização
da personagem Stargirl, que possui uma aura fantasiosa em cada cena
que ela aparece. Ela é tão cativante que, nos momentos onde ela não
está em tela, o espectador sente que aquela cena está faltando
alguma coisa, o que foi algo bem similar ao que a Leslie, de “Ponte
para Terabítia”, nos fez sentir ao assistir as cenas onde ela não
está presente. Parte de mim está satisfeito que o livro tenha sido
adaptado na forma de longa-metragem, mas para um desenvolvimento mais
aprofundado dos personagens (especialmente os coadjuvantes e os
adultos) e para desacelerar um pouco o passo, a outra parte de mim
acha que o formato de série teria sido mais adequado para a trama.
Na introdução, mencionei que o filme trazia uma mensagem bem
bonita, a qual, no caso, seria a da auto-aceitação, algo do tipo
“Seja você mesmo, mesmo que a sociedade tente te moldar à vontade
dela.”. E “Stargirl” lida com essa mensagem e a entrega de uma
forma bem bonita e poética, até. É um filme bem inspirador e
motivacional, especialmente para o público-alvo principal dele,
composto por adolescentes que estão tentando se encontrar no mundo.
E além disso, é um filme bem leve, cativante, agridoce, e
totalmente adequado para toda a família, o que faz dele algo bem
apropriado para assistir na época turbulenta em que vivemos hoje.
(When I first heard
about this film, I had never even heard about the book that it was
based upon, but I believe that it has captured my attention because
of the same reason that it captured other people's: the fact that the
title character is portrayed by Grace VanderWaal, who won America's
Got Talent, in 2016. And, even though I haven't read the book, I
could see why VanderWaal got cast for this role. But now, let's talk
about the script. There's nothing relatively new or original here.
This is one of those films where you know exactly where it's going,
but what makes it different is the charm it carries, and that is
something “Stargirl” has to spare, thanks to the actors'
charisma. The characters are well-developed, even with some getting
more recognition than others. The script makes us care about the main
characters (Leo and Stargirl) from their first moments on-screen.
That happens because, just like most school-set films, the frequent
theme of bullying is dealt with here, in a very superficial, but
efficient way. I really liked the characterization of the character
Stargirl, who has a fantasy-ish aura all around her in every scene
she's in. She's so captivating that, in the moments where she's not
on-screen, the viewer feels that scene is missing something, which is
similar to what Leslie, from “Bridge to Terabithia”, made us feel
in every scene she's not in. Part of me is satisfied that this was
adapted in feature-length form, but in order to give supporting and
adult characters some more depth and to slow down the pace a bit, the
other part believes it would've turned out a little better in a
limited series format. In the introduction, I mentioned that it
carried a beautiful message, which, in this case, would be that of
self-acceptance, something like “Be yourself, even though society
tries to mold you their way”. And “Stargirl” deals with and
delivers that message in a very beautiful and poetic way, even. It's
a really inspiring and motivational film, especially for its main
target audience, composed by teenagers who want to find themselves in
the world. And besides that, it's a light, captivating, bittersweet
film that's fit for the whole family, which makes it appropriate to
watch during the turbulent times we're living in today.)
O elenco trabalha muito
bem com o que é dado a cada um. Eu gostei bastante da atuação do
Graham Verchere, ele consegue transmitir muito bem todos os
sentimentos que um adolescente apaixonado por alguém transmite. A
química dele com VanderWaal é praticamente instantânea. Os
melhores momentos do filme são aqueles onde os dois estão em tela
juntos. Ainda prefiro a atuação dele em “Summer of '84”, mas
ele faz um ótimo trabalho aqui. A Grace VanderWaal literalmente dá
vida ao filme. Achei a performance dela impressionante para uma
estreante. O talento musical dela é usado aqui de forma que
complementa a atuação dela com diálogos perfeitamente. Assim como
disse no parágrafo anterior, a personagem (e por consequência, a
atriz) tem tanto carisma, que nas cenas onde ela não está presente,
nós sentimos que algo está faltando. Nas cenas musicais, VanderWaal
injeta nelas uma aura bem fantasiosa e lúdica, o que colabora com um
sentimento de mistério que surge no público, quando se trata de sua
personagem, o que é intensificado pelo uso dos aspectos técnicos,
mas falaremos disso depois. Eu gostei muito da performance do Karan
Brar, conhecido por interpretar o Chirag na série de filmes “Diário
de um Banana”. É adequado dizer que foi uma evolução bem
visível, porque em “Diário...”, o personagem dele era
extremamente estereotipado e limitado a trejeitos que serviriam de
alívio cômico. Aqui, ele também serve como alívio cômico, mas é
possível ver que ele está bem mais à vontade com seu personagem, o
que eu, particularmente, acho muito bom. Eu queria ter visto mais da
Darby Stanchfield, que fez um ótimo trabalho em “Locke & Key”
recentemente (também interpretando uma mãe viúva), mas em
“Stargirl”, ela é bem distante de Leo, diferente do que
aconteceu com a Sra. Locke e os filhos. Talvez em formato de série,
a personagem dela poderia ter sido desenvolvida de forma mais
eficiente. O Giancarlo Esposito faz um bom trabalho em expor
informações e colaborar para o desenvolvimento de Leo e de seu
relacionamento com Stargirl. Não é um papel tão importante assim
(temos aqui outro caso de personagem cujo desenvolvimento seria
melhor numa série), mas ele tem muito carisma.
(The cast works really
well with what's given to each of them. I really enjoyed Graham
Verchere's performance, he manages to transmit all the feelings that
a teenager in love goes through really well. His chemistry with
VanderWaal is practically instant. The best moments in the film are
those in which the two are on-screen together. I still think his
performance in “Summer of '84” is a little better, but he does a
really good job here. Grace VanderWaal literally gives life to the
film. I personally thought her performance was impressive, for a
debut acting performance. Her musical talent is used here as a
perfect complement to her dialogue work. Like I said in the previous
paragraph, the character (and consequently, the actress) is so
charismatic, that during the scenes she's not in, we can't help but
feel they're missing something. In the musical scenes, VanderWaal
injects them with a fantasy atmosphere, which collaborates with the
feeling of mystery the viewer has regarding her character, and that's
heightened through the technical aspects, but we'll get to that
later. I really liked Karan Brar's performance, who is known for
playing Chirag in the “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” movie series. It's
proper to say that this was a visible evolution, because his
character in “Diary...” was highly stereotyped and limited to
certain attitudes that would serve for comic relief. Here, he's also
the comic relief, but it's visible that he's way more comfortable
with this role, which I, particularly, think it's really good. I
wanted to see more of Darby Stanchfield, who did a great job in
“Locke & Key” recently (also playing a widowed mother), but
in “Stargirl”, she's more distant from Leo, unlike what happened
with Mrs. Locke and her kids. Maybe in a series format, her character
could've been developed in a more efficient way. Giancarlo Esposito
does a good job in exposing information and collaborating for the
development of Leo and his relationship with Stargirl. It's not a
very important role (we have here another case of character whose
development would've been better in a series), but he has a lot of
charisma.)
E, por último, mas não
menos importante, temos os aspectos técnicos. A fotografia não
demonstra nada de novo, mas é bem operante. A montagem faz algo bom
e algo ruim ao mesmo tempo: nos números musicais, a edição é
dinâmica e confere uma veia mais de videoclipe às cenas, tornando
tudo mais “perfeito” e colaborando ainda mais para o mistério da
personagem Stargirl; mas certos cortes fazem tudo ficar um pouco
apressado, o que interfere no desenvolvimento de alguns personagens e
no passo da história. A trilha sonora foi muito bem escolhida, sendo
a maioria covers de músicas famosas de bandas como The Beach Boys,
Big Star e The Go-Go's, e VanderWaal injeta uma nova identidade mais
acústica a elas, o que é bem legal. A trilha sonora instrumental de
Rob Simonsen também é bem agradável de se ouvir, mantendo o tom
acústico do trabalho de VanderWaal, e construindo a identidade de
alguns dos personagens a partir das melodias.
(And at last, but not
least, we have the technical aspects. The cinematography doesn't show
anything new, but it's really operative. The editing does something
good and something bad at the same time: in the musical numbers, the
editing is dynamic and it gives the scenes a music video-ish vein,
making everything more “perfect” and collaborating even more for
the mystery of Stargirl's character; but some cuts make everything
feel a little rushed, which interferes in the development of some
characters and in the story's pacing. The soundtrack was really well
chosen, with most of the songs being covers of famous songs by bands
like The Beach Boys, Big Star and The Go-Go's, and VanderWaal injects
them with a new, more acoustic identity, which is pretty cool. Rob
Simonsen's score is also really pleasant to hear, maintaining the
acoustic tone of VanderWaal's work, and building the identity of some
of the characters through the melodies.)
Resumindo, “Stargirl”
é o tipo de filme que deveria fazer mais presença na época
turbulenta em que estamos vivendo hoje. Não é uma história
totalmente original, mas ele consegue transmitir uma mensagem de uma
forma bonita, e é carregado pelo carisma de seus atores e pelo
enorme talento de Grace VanderWaal.

“Stargirl” is the type of film that should be more present in
these turbulent times we're living today. It's not a totally original
story, but it manages to transmit a message in a beautiful way, and
is carried by the charisma of its actors and by Grace VanderWaal's
enormous talent.
I give it an 8,5 out of
10!!
