(And don't forget to like the blog's Facebook page:)

(What's up, film buffs! João Pedro here. I believe that as time goes by, many bands and singers use filmmaking as a way to promote their work. Beyoncé made a Lemonade short film, Arcade Fire and Imagine Dragons will make long short films on their new songs, and some make a cinematic story based on songs from their albums. Melanie Martinez, a former The Voice contestant, uses filmmaking as, besides to promote her work, a method to tell stories. That is what she does with her debut album, “Cry Baby”, released in 2015. I was introduced to this young and promising song artist's work through school, and I was impressed with her songwriting and her well produced music videos (which she wrote and directed herself). So, I ask for you to be my guest on a journey through the unfortunate, explicitely dark world of “Cry Baby”, track by track. Let's go!)

(“Cry Baby” has 13 tracks, and maybe some of them connect to each other in a way. All of them have traditionally childish titles (“Dollhouse”, “Sippy Cup”, “Milk and Cookies”, “Tag, You're It”, among others), but keep it in your mind that Martinez's work deals with serious themes like abuse, madness, kidnapping, betrayal, drug addictions and even rape, and also has songs with really heavy profanities. I will make here an analysis of the album's story as a continuous story, as if the 13 tracks were completely connected, which they are. Let's begin!)

(On the first 3 tracks, “Cry Baby”, “Dollhouse” and “Sippy Cup”, we are introduced to the protagonist of Martinez's story, Cry Baby (played in the music videos by Martinez herself) and her family. We already learn in the first lines of “Cry Baby”, whose instrumentals are a mix of babies laughing and crying, that the protagonist is a very emotional person, as she “replaces her brain with her heart” and “takes things so hard”, which makes her fall apart. Her family, introduced in “Dollhouse”, is highly unstable and dysfunctional: the mother has a huge addiction to smoking and drinking, the son smokes marijuana, and the father cheats on his wife constantly, but even so,
they try to lead people to believe that they are a perfect family, manipulating it like it's a dollhouse.
Like the chorus says:
“Picture, picture, smile for the picture
Pose with your brother, won't you be a good sister?
Everyone thinks that we're perfect
Please, don't let them look through the curtains
D-O-L-L-H-O-U-S-E, I see things nobody else sees”
And if “Dollhouse” is about hiding what's through the curtains, “Sippy Cup” is about all the trouble that happens in that place, but still the family tries to put a “perfect” mask over it. The verse that explicits that is “Syrup is still syrup in a sippy cup”. The syrup in question would be alcohol, one of Cry Baby's mother's addictions, that means, even she tries to ease it up and think that wouldn't cause any trouble, pouring the liquid in a sippy cup, it's still alcohol. In the music video, we see Cry Baby's mom passed out on the kitchen (which is mentioned in Dollhouse) floor, while the dad arrives with a lover, and so, her anger, joined by the alcohol addiction, leads her to murder both of them with a knife, while Cry Baby watches everything. The mother poisons Cry Baby, taking away her innocence and making her forget everything that happened.)

Always aiming paper airplanes at me when you're around
You build me up like building blocks just so you can bring me down
You can crush my candy cane but you'll never catch me cry
If you dangle that diploma and I dead you, don't be surprised”
(In the next two tracks, “Carousel” and “Alphabet Boy”, we see Cry Baby falling deeply and hopelessly in love with a boy. In Carousel, we see that, even if she runs and runs after him, she never manages to reach him, as if he's on the carousel horse in front of hers, which makes her relationship with this boy something cyclical, as a carousel itself. The next track, Alphabet Boy, shows the “break-up” of Cry Baby and the boy, with the girl tired of riding in an infinite carousel. Alphabet Boy is one of the most brilliant tracks on the album, containing continuous parts with the letters of the alphabet one after the other, in this case, the letters A, B, C, and D. See the example below:
Always aiming paper airplanes at me when you're around
You build me up like building blocks just so you can bring me down
You can crush my candy cane but you'll never catch me cry
If you dangle that diploma and I dead you, don't be surprised”
The title of the song does that (Alphabet Boy), and because of its cool beat, addictive lyrics, and genius songwriting, this is definitely one of my favorite Melanie Martinez songs.)

(In the next two tracks, “Soap” and “Training Wheels”, Cry Baby falls in love again, this time, for a boy named Johnny. In Soap, we see Cry Baby trying to get to know Johnny, but she did not take care and tells him everything that happened to her until that moment, from her dysfunctional family to the carousel which spun in an infinite loop. That shocks Johnny, as if Cry Baby “threw a toaster in a bathtub”, but he understands, and Cry Baby's feeling of love becomes mutual in the next track, Training Wheels, whose background instrumentals are bicycle wheels, where the two live the typical of a stable couple: they have a misunderstanding, fight, but in the end, they say sorry for each other, and for a moment, we think something good has finally happened to our emotionally unstable protagonist. Too bad that from the next track and beyond, it'll just get worse.)

Ele me perseguia e não parava
Peguei, tá com você, peguei, peguei, tá com você
Agarrou meu cabelo, me empurrou
(The next 3 tracks, “Pity Party”, “Tag, You're It” and “Milk and Cookies”, are the saddest ones in Cry Baby's point of view. In Pity Party, it's Cry Baby's birthday and she plans a big party with a 60s theme, with vinyl music and pastel colours. She invites all her friends, including Johnny, and makes handmade invitations, waiting anxiously for her birthday. The day finally comes. She waits for her guests. And waits some more, and then some more time. And nothing. Nobody comes, not even her loved one. She then asks herself “Should I have told them something so they would've come to my party?” and she gets really sad. REALLY sad. Tired of being disappointed by others, she screams really loud and simply destroys the party: pops the balloons, pulls out the filling of the stuffed animals, drops the cake on purpose, and it goes further. Here we have the first glimmers of madness in Cry Baby. After her mess, she goes to put the rest of the things she used in her party in the garbage, and heads to the supermarket, which leads to the most traumatizing experience in her life so far.
The next track, “Tag, You're It”, is really disturbing to hear, but it's necessary whatsoever. It tells the story, through voice changes Martinez made to play another character, of how Cry Baby got kidnapped by a Big Bad Wolf ice cream man, in the parking lot of a supermarket. Just like it says on the chorus:
“Running through the parking lot
He chased me and he wouldn't stop
Tag, you're it, tag, tag, you're it
Grabbed my hair, pushed me down
Took the words right out of my mouth
Tag, you're it, tag, tag, you're it”
The song's beat becomes a little creepy, the voice changes are quite terrifying (you start to hear Martinez's sweet voice, and then, all of a sudden, you start to hear a super thick voice, which is also Martinez's, but now playing the role of the wolf), and the ending haunts me even now. But let's remember two can play this game, and in the next track, “Milk and Cookies”, it's Cry Baby's turn to play.
In “Milk and Cookies”, we see Cry Baby in the wolf's lair, where he gives her a mandatory mission: to bake cookies for him to eat with some milk. And then Cry Baby remembers that the cashier from the supermarket gave her a flask with a mysterious blue liquid inside. She, guessing it's poison, pours the entire bottle in her cookie mix. The time comes to an end, and she gives her kidnapper his milk and cookies. Her guess was right: the wolf starts to choke with the poisoned cookies, and, to finish the job, she pours an entire bottle of milk on his head and heads out of the lair, with her madness growing and growing.)

Agora, chegamos à reta final do álbum: “Pacify Her”, “Mrs. Potato Head”, e “Mad Hatter” (Acalme-a, Sra.
“Sou louca, querido, sou insana

(Now we get to the final lap of the album: “Pacify Her”, “Mrs. Potato Head” and “Mad Hatter”. In Pacify Her, we see a completely insane Cry Baby trying to steal a boy that's already committed. She sends notes, attracts his attention, makes him laugh, tries to play with him, but then, his girlfriend shows him her breasts, getting him into some sort of trance. Hypnotized, the boy and his girlfriend leave Cry Baby, alone once again, which leads her to think about esthetics.
She goes to her home, and turns on the TV, where she watches commercials for diet pills and blonde wigs. Cry Baby, a wreck because of all the stuff happening in her life, and because of the recent Pacify Her happening, fills up her chest with paper towels to “augment” its volume, takes some diet pills and puts on a blonde wig. Feeling “satisfied” with herself, she goes back to the TV room and sits to watch the Mrs Potato Head TV show. Then, we go into “Mrs. Potato Head”, a brilliant social review about the actual esthetics pattern and one of my favorite songs on the album. In it, we follow a young woman that, one day, receives presents from her boyfriend, one of them being a facelift plastic surgery. After the surgery, her boyfriend cuts off her bandages, revealing that her face has been severely disfigured. She tries to make it “better”, putting on makeup and a blonde wig, but then she sees something that makes her regret everything she has done about herself: her boyfriend hitting on another woman. Devastated, she cries.
Shocked with the program, Cry Baby removes the paper towels from her chest and the blonde wig, leading on to “Mad Hatter”, where she accepts who she really is, crazy and all. The music video shows Cry Baby on an “Alice in Wonderland” trip, where she encounters “friends” who are just as crazy as she is, and she accepts her craziness, as she says on the chorus:
“I'm nuts, baby, I'm mad
The craziest friend that you've ever had
You think I'm psycho, you think I'm gone
Tell the psychiatrist something is wrong
Over the bend, entirely bonkers
You like me best when I'm off my rocker
Tell you a secret, I'm not alarmed
So what if I'm crazy?
The best people are”
The song closes the album in a creepy, fun way, with the music video leaving doors open for Melanie Martinez's second album and its accompanying movie (yeah, you heard that right) instead of 13 music videos.
This album is one of my favorites, and I can't wait for Martinez's sophomore album. I LOVE IT SO MUCH!!!!

I give it a 10 out of 10!!!)

Bom, então é isso pessoal! Espero que tenham gostado!! Até a próxima!!

Life is Strange: uma experiência de viagem no tempo exuberantemente impactante (Bilíngue)

(And don't forget to like the blog's Facebook page:)

(What's up, film buffs. João Pedro here! I'm gonna do something different in this post, I won't write about movies, or TV, but about a videogame that could easily fit in those two categories. It's an exuberantly impactful experience, derivative in the right amount, and simply genius. Get ready to enter the thrilling and realistic (sort of... hahahahaha) world of Life is Strange.)

(Life is Strange is a game distributed by Square Enix and published by Dontnod Entertainment that tells the story of Maxine Caulfield (Max for short), an 18-year-old college student who returns to her hometown in Oregon, to study at the prestigious Blackwell Academy. On one fateful day, after class, she witnesses a murder, and when she reaches out to intervene, she discovers she can travel back in time. Joining forces with her childhood friend, Chloe Price, a punk anarchist transformed by the disappearance of her closest friend, Rachel Amber, Max will use her recently discovered ability to solve this mysterious case, while she has to race against time to discover the answers before a natural disaster, present in a prophetic dream that Max had during class, happens.)

(This story totally looks like a movie, I admit it. But it's so good that it got released as a videogame first. The game works with choices, like the games by TellTale (The Walking Dead), which will affect the past, present, and future of the experience (that is literally the warning given in the start of the game). So, to have a nice experience, and to complete the game, you have to make good choices, not necessarily having to be the right ones. That's why there's the rewind (Max's power to go back in time), to, if you thought that choice wasn't the most adequate, you go back in time to make another choice, one that you think it's the most certain. I had to go back several times in some parts. SEVERAL times. So, to play Life is Strange, you need patience and calm, to analyze the choices and choose the most adequate, and as long as the game goes by, the choices are harder to make.)

(The game has great graphics and a fantastic voice work, especially Chloe's, voiced by Ashly Burch. Her performance is really sentimental, you can feel the emotion through her voice, and that's quite impactful. And I want to make it very clear that this game is not for children. Besides containing scenes with drug consuming and heavy profanities, the story deals with serious themes, like kidnapping, murder, bullying, drug trafficking, depression and suicide. The most adequate age line I would recommend this game to is 16 and above. Honestly, Life is Strange deals with these themes (especially suicide) in a more human and shocking way than movies and TV shows around. There could be several debates and discussions about how this game deals with reality in such a human and realistic way. The communication this game has with reality is quite impressive.)

(Even with the shocking themes, Life is Strange has got nostalgia. There are references to several things in pop and cult culture here: Planet of the Apes, Twin Peaks, The Twilight Zone, Doctor Who, Sherlock Holmes, Faster Pussycats! Kill! Kill!, John Hughes movies, and it goes on. And that's good, because if the player knows these stuff, they'll feel themselves wrapped in the good feeling that is nostalgia.)

Resumindo, Life is Strange é o melhor jogo que eu já joguei. Mal posso esperar pra ver a série baseada no jogo!!
(In a nutshell, Life is Strange is the best game I've ever played. It has a great story, well produced visuals, a very sentimental voice work, time travel, realism in some aspects, and it's really, really thrilling. One of the most cinematic games I've played. It's a captivating, exuberant, revolting, emotionally-charged experience that is worth your time and money. I can't wait to see the TV show based on it!!!)

8 – MELHOR ROTEIRO ADAPTADO (BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY)

QUEM VAI GANHAR: “ME CHAME PELO SEU NOME”, ESCRITO POR JAMES IVORY, BASEADO NO ROMANCE DE ANDRÉ ACIMAN
(WHO WILL WIN: “CALL ME BY YOUR NAME”, WRITTEN BY JAMES IVORY, BASED ON THE NOVEL BY ANDRÉ ACIMAN)

(This may be the only award that Luca Guadagnino's romantic drama will take in the ceremony. Snubbed in the Best Director and Best Supporting Actor (Michael Stuhlbarg and Armie Hammer) awards, the script written by James Ivory, who is 89 years old, won several awards for adapted screenplay (Critics' Choice, WGA, BAFTA and the USC Scripter Award). I won't be surprised if Ivory wins, and I haven't read the book in which the film is based, but by what everyone is saying, it is a good adaptation of André Aciman's acclaimed novel.)

QUEM EU QUERIA QUE GANHASSE: “LOGAN”, ESCRITO POR SCOTT FRANK, JAMES MANGOLD E MICHAEL GREEN, BASEADO NOS PERSONAGENS DA MARVEL COMICS
(WHO I WISH IT COULD WIN: “LOGAN”, WRITTEN BY SCOTT FRANK, JAMES MANGOLD AND MICHAEL GREEN, BASED ON CHARACTERS CREATED BY MARVEL COMICS)

(Logan started a revolution on superhero movies. It can be said that Logan is an action-filled drama film, it's the least super “superhero film” Marvel has ever made. A neo-noir Western film set in the future, Logan is the Wolverine film we needed so badly, with a high rating, violence, profanity and an acid sense of humor. James Mangold, also responsible for “The Wolverine”, can direct this film in an astounding way, and the script written by Scott Frank, Mangold, and Michael Green can succeed, at the same time, to entertain those who came looking for a blockbuster and introduce discussion-worthy heavy themes into the story. Logan was very snubbed by the Academy, it could be easily nominated for Best Picture, Actor, Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress, as said in previous posts, but with a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay, Logan earns its spot in the list of acclaimed and successful superhero films, for having a somber and melancholic tone, and for closing the 17-year trajectory of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine so wonderfully. It's highly likely that Call Me by Your Name might take the award, but if Logan does, it will be well deserved! What a movie!!)

OS OUTROS INDICADOS (THE OTHER NOMINEES):

QUEM PODERIA TER SIDO INDICADO, MAS NÃO FOI (WHO COULD HAVE BEEN NOMINATED, BUT WASN'T):

(“Wonderstruck”, written by Brian Selznick and based on the novel of the same name written by Brian Selznick)

(“It”, written by Cary Joji Fukunaga, Gary Dauberman and Chase Palmer, based on the novel of the same name written by Stephen King)

9 – MELHOR ROTEIRO ORIGINAL (BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY)

QUEM VAI GANHAR: “CORRA!”, ESCRITO POR JORDAN PEELE
(WHO WILL WIN: “GET OUT”, WRITTEN BY JORDAN PEELE)

(You can't be more original than that. A comedian turned into the new Hitchcock. Jordan Peele manages here, at the same time, to give a little fright and to give his audience thoughts and conscience on racism. It's simply brilliant the way that Peele can manipulate the real scenes and not to mess them up with fantasy scenes, and most of the time, both of them are combined. “Get Out” had two endings, one of them theatrical, and another which was in the initial draft. The initial ending would have extra chances to boost the audience's thoughts on racial prejudice, but the theatrical ending is also good, I really liked it. Being a nominee for Best Picture, “Get Out” is an experience like nothing you've ever seen, and by combining Jordan Peele's mind with the performances by Daniel Kaluuya (who was nominated for Best Actor), Catherine Keener and Allison Williams, it becomes a discussion-worthy movie you can't miss. If it wins, I'll be satisfied, because it is a great script, but not the best, in my opinion, but, as it's getting lots of awards, including the Writers Guild of America Award, it's highly likely that Peele gets the Oscar.)

QUEM EU QUERIA QUE GANHASSE: “DOENTES DE AMOR”, ESCRITO POR KUMAIL NANJIANI E EMILY V. GORDON
(WHO I WISH IT COULD WIN: “THE BIG SICK”, WRITTEN BY KUMAIL NANJIANI AND EMILY V. GORDON)

(“The Big Sick” is a true story whose main characters are the screenwriters. And it's a romantic comedy. A. ROMANTIC. COMEDY. Besides introducing an initially unlikely love story, Nanjiani and Gordon's screenplay also deals with heavy themes, such as racism, cultural differences and prejudice. All without losing the sense of humor the film carries through most of its running time. Being another film that was heavily snubbed in the ceremony, Nanjiani and Gordon, in my opinion, have a slight advantage: they lived all that happened in real life: a coma that Emily V. Gordon faced some time ago, from which she almost died. It's really heartbreaking the impact of these events in the people who were there in that moment. Imagine Kumail Nanjiani's experience to live all that over again just to do a movie. And it is an emotionally charged, surprisingly funny experience, and boosted by the competent directing by Michael Showalter and by the performances of Nanjiani, Zoe Kazan, Ray Romano and the real star of the show, Holly Hunter, the “real” script of “The Big Sick” is beautiful. Incredibly beautiful. If “Get Out” wins, I'll understand why, but if this film wins, then I'll say it deserved it!!! If you haven't seen this movie yet, you don't know what you're missing!!)

OS OUTROS INDICADOS (THE OTHER NOMINEES):
  • “Lady Bird”, escrito por Greta Gerwig
(“Lady Bird”, written by Greta Gerwig)

4 – MELHOR ATOR (BEST ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE)

QUEM VAI E MERECE GANHAR: GARY OLDMAN, POR “O DESTINO DE UMA NAÇÃO”
(WHO WILL AND DESERVES TO WIN: GARY OLDMAN, FROM “DARKEST HOUR”)
(Though it was a particular surprise, for me, that “Darkest Hour” got nominated for the main award of the evening, it wasn't a surprise that Gary Oldman's performance would be between the nominees for Best Actor. Incarnating the former Prime Minister of England, Winston Churchill, underneath heavy and extremely well-made makeup, which really makes it feel like Oldman is Churchill, the actor gives life to the film directed by Joe Wright, most known for “Pride and Prejudice”, with tense and funny moments, and with a scene, that in my opinion, is worth the entire ride. I really liked “Darkest Hour”, but Gary Oldman's performance is, for me, one of the best representations of real life figures in film in these past years, and he, after his first nomination for the fantastic “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy”, can and deserves to win his first Academy Award.)

OS OUTROS INDICADOS (THE OTHER NOMINEES):
  • Timothée Chalamet, Me Chame pelo Seu Nome (Call Me By Your Name)
  • Daniel Kaluuya, Corra! (Get Out)
  • Daniel Day-Lewis, Trama Fantasma (Phantom Thread)
  • Denzel Washington, Roman J Israel Esq.

QUEM PODERIA TER SIDO INDICADO, MAS NÃO FOI (WHO COULD HAVE BEEN NOMINATED, BUT WASN'T):
  • James Franco, Artista do Desastre (The Disaster Artist)
(Isso sim é que é esnobada! (Now, that is a snub!)
  • Hugh Jackman, Logan

5 – MELHOR ATRIZ (BEST ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE)

QUEM VAI GANHAR: FRANCES MCDORMAND, POR “TRÊS ANÚNCIOS PARA UM CRIME”
(WHO WILL WIN: FRANCES MCDORMAND, FROM “THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI”)

(It's undeniable that Frances McDormand delivers one of her best performances in Martin McDonagh's new film. After several supporting roles in other films, some of them directed by her husband and his brother (The Coen Brothers), she finally found an award-worthy role, which she keeps receiving acclaim from. She's brutal, destructive, vindictive, in some moments, sensitive, and when necessary, violent as Mildred Hayes. The film has a heavy supporting cast (built by the also nominated Sam Rockwell and Woody Harrelson), but Frances is the heart and soul of the dark humored drama. She won every acting award you can imagine because of this film (Golden Globe, BAFTA, SAG, and so it goes), and it would be even fair to give her the award, because honestly, I LOVED Frances' performance! And it wouldn't be the first time she gets the award, as she won because of the unforgettable role of Marge Gunderson in the Coen Brothers' Fargo. Frances McDormand nailed it, and that's a fact.)

QUEM EU QUERIA QUE GANHASSE: SALLY HAWKINS, POR “A FORMA DA ÁGUA”
(WHO I WISH THAT COULD WIN: SALLY HAWKINS, FROM “THE SHAPE OF WATER”)

(I don't know if it's because Hawkins' role as Elisa in The Shape of Water didn't have any lines and there was only sign language, but I (I) sympathized a lot more with Sally than with Frances. By the fact of the character being mute, Hawkins leaves the entire job to her facial expressions. She can deliver any possible expression in this movie: happiness, sadness, anger, curiosity, frustration, indignation, torment, compassion, fear, courage, etc., all without saying ONE. SINGLE. WORD. I'll make something very clear here: Sally deserved an Oscar since Mike Leigh's “Happy-Go-Lucky”, by interpreting the super optimistic Poppy. She got nominated because of Blue Jasmine, which I didn't see yet, for Best Supporting Actress, so it isn't the first time she is recognized by the Academy. She also deserved at least a nomination because of the independent film “Maudie”, but it didn't work out that way. I fell in love with Elisa, I worried and cared about her during the 2-hour running time, something that, unfortunately, did not happen with Mildred Hayes, protagonist of “Three Billboards...”. Here's the thing: if Frances wins, I won't be surprised, because, as said above, she simply rocks, but if Sally wins, it will be me giving a prize to Guillermo del Toro all over again (LOL)... The Shape of Water is simply spellbinding, and Sally, just like Frances in “Three Billboards”, is the heart and soul of Guillermo del Toro's new fairy tale, and just like I wish the film could win the main award, I wish Sally could win Best Actress.)

AS OUTRAS INDICADAS (THE OTHER NOMINEES):
  • Margot Robbie, Eu, Tonya (I, Tonya)
  • Saoirse Ronan, Lady Bird
  • Meryl Streep, The Post

QUEM PODERIA TER SIDO INDICADA, MAS NÃO FOI (WHO COULD HAVE BEEN NOMINATED, BUT WASN'T):
  • Brooklynn Prince, Projeto Flórida (The Florida Project)

6 – MELHOR ATOR COADJUVANTE (BEST ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE)

QUEM VAI E MERECE GANHAR: SAM ROCKWELL, POR “TRÊS ANÚNCIOS PARA UM CRIME”
(WHO WILL AND DESERVES TO WIN: SAM ROCKWELL, FROM “THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI”)

(Just like McDormand, Rockwell delivers one of his best performances since The Green Mile and The Way Way Back. Officer Dixon is corrupt, violent, does not take any crap from anybody, and he has a real potty mouth. (LOL) Thanks to Martin McDonagh's script, Rockwell plays the character in a spectacular way and makes an unlikely and unpredictable duo with McDormand in “Three Billboards...”. He, just like McDormand, won every possible award for his performance (Golden Globe, BAFTA, SAG, Critics' Choice, etc.), and it is very likely that in his first, really well-deserved nomination, Rockwell takes his first Oscar home.)

OS OUTROS INDICADOS (THE OTHER NOMINEES):
  • Woody Harrelson, Três Anúncios para um Crime (Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri)
  • Richard Jenkins, A Forma da Água (The Shape of Water)
  • Willem Dafoe, Projeto Flórida (The Florida Project)
  • Christopher Plummer, Todo o Dinheiro No Mundo (All The Money in the World)

QUEM PODERIA TER SIDO INDICADO, MAS NÃO FOI (WHO COULD HAVE BEEN NOMINATED, BUT WASN'T):
  • Ray Romano, Doentes de Amor (The Big Sick)
  • Patrick Stewart, Logan
  • Michael Stuhlbarg, Me Chame Pelo Seu Nome (Call Me By Your Name)

7 – MELHOR ATRIZ COADJUVANTE (BEST ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE)

QUEM VAI E MERECE GANHAR: ALLISON JANNEY, POR “EU, TONYA”
(WHO WILL AND DESERVES TO WIN: ALLISON JANNEY, FROM “I, TONYA”)

(I, Tonya is a film with a clever script, a nostalgic soundtrack, very good editing, and award-worthy performances. Margot Robbie nails it as skater Tonya Harding, but who really gets the spotlight is Allison Janney, who plays Tonya's mother, LaVona Golden. She, just like Officer Dixon in “Three Billboards...”, is a real potty mouth, and she forces her 4-year-old daughter to start skating as soon as possible, punishing her if there was a wrong step. She's like the Jackson 5's father, but a female version of him. (LOL) The funniest parts with Janney are the present interview scenes, where she has a little bird on her shoulder, which brings another funny aspect in the film. Thanks to Steven Rogers' script, Janney, known for the comedy series Mom, delivers one of her best performances here, and for that, she deserves the award.)

AS OUTRAS INDICADAS (THE OTHER NOMINEES):
  • Lesley Manville, Trama Fantasma (Phantom Thread)
  • Laurie Metcalf, Lady Bird
  • Mary J. Blige, Mudbound
  • Octavia Spencer, A Forma da Água (The Shape of Water)

QUEM PODERIA TER SIDO INDICADA, MAS NÃO FOI (WHO COULD'VE BEEN NOMINATED, BUT WASN'T):

  • Holly Hunter, Doentes de Amor (The Big Sick)
(If she had been nominated, she would've won the Oscar.))
  • Dafne Keen, Logan
  • Bria Vinaite, Projeto Flórida (The Florida Project)
  • Millicent Simmonds, Sem Fôlego (Wonderstruck)

2 – MELHOR DIREÇÃO (BEST DIRECTOR)

QUEM VAI E MERECE GANHAR: GUILLERMO DEL TORO, POR “A FORMA DA ÁGUA”
(WHO WILL AND DESERVES TO WIN: GUILLERMO DEL TORO, FROM “THE SHAPE OF WATER”)
(As said above, he's one of my favorite directors, and I've never seen a bad movie he has made. Cronos, The Devil's Backbone, Pan's Labyrinth, the Hellboy movies, Crimson Peak... I like them all! But “The Shape of Water” is the one which he most deserves the award. He can combine light, shadow, music and color in a magnificent way. Besides coming up with a fantastic script along with Vanessa Taylor, del Toro becomes a master at directing, and if I was told to read the Best Director envelope and if his name was there, I'd be like: “GUILLERMO DEL TORO!!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAA” I'd cry and jump of happiness, and when he gets up on the stage, I would give him a super hug!!! Yeah, I would come to that point to give an award to Guillermo del Toro. (LOL) As the ceremony also celebrates diversity even more after the #OscarsSoWhite controversy, it would be more than fair for them to award del Toro.)

OS OUTROS CANDIDATOS (THE OTHER NOMINEES):
  • Jordan Peele, Corra! (Get Out)
  • Greta Gerwig, Lady Bird
  • Christopher Nolan, Dunkirk
  • Paul Thomas Anderson, Trama Fantasma (Phantom Thread)

QUEM PODERIA TER SIDO INDICADO, MAS NÃO FOI (WHO COULD HAVE BEEN NOMINATED, BUT WASN'T):
  • Martin McDonagh, Três Anúncios para um Crime (Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri)
  • Sean Baker, Projeto Flórida (The Florida Project)
  • Todd Haynes, Sem Fôlego (Wonderstruck)

3 – MELHOR FILME DE ANIMAÇÃO (BEST ANIMATED FEATURE)

QUEM VAI E MERECE GANHAR: VIVA: A VIDA É UMA FESTA
(WHO WILL AND DESERVES TO WIN: COCO)
O Poderoso Chefinho e O Touro Ferdinando poderiam ser substituídos facilmente pelo extremamente superior Lego Batman: O Filme, o divertido Capitão Cueca e os independentes Psiconautas, As Crianças Esquecidas; The Big Bad Fox and Other Tales; e Mary and The Witch's Flower, todos considerados muito bons pela crítica e audiência.
(The Best Animated Feature category this year is very less competitive than the previous years. There are 5 nominees and only 3 (Coco, Loving Vincent and The Breadwinner) are considered to be good. The Boss Baby and Ferdinand could easily be replaced by the extremely superior The Lego Batman Movie, the fun Captain Underpants, and the independent films Birdboy: The Forgotten Children; The Big Bad Fox and Other Tales and Mary and the Witch's Flower, all considered to be very good by critics and audience. Even with the delightfully wonderful visuals of Loving Vincent, Pixar's first musical has a well-written narrative and emotional impact, with bilingual songs as a background, composed by the same team as Frozen. I really, really loved Loving Vincent, but I would still give the award to Coco, because, as with the biopic of the most creative painter in history, it's an unforgettable experience.)

OS OUTROS INDICADOS (THE OTHER NOMINEES):
  • Com Amor, Van Gogh (Loving Vincent)
  • The Breadwinner
  • O Poderoso Chefinho (The Boss Baby)
  • O Touro Ferdinando (Ferdinand)

QUEM PODERIA TER SIDO INDICADO, MAS NÃO FOI (WHO COULD'VE BEEN NOMINATED, BUT WASN'T):

  • Psiconautas: As Crianças Esquecidas (Birdboy: The Forgotten Children)
  • The Big Bad Fox and Other Tales
  • Capitão Cueca (Captain Underpants)
  • Mary and the Witch's Flower

(And don't forget to like the blog's Facebook page:)

Oi, galera!
(Hey guys! Well, there's less than a month to the Oscars, and I am very excited for the biggest ceremony which celebrates the best in the movie industry. We all have our bets, and the films that we love. The films we love may or may not win the awards we expect them to win, but in some categories, the winners deserve it. So, I'll put here my bets to some of the categories of the 2018 Oscars, and in some cases, in my opinion, what I wish it wins, but it might not do so. I'll say my bets in the categories I think are the main ones (Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Adapted and Original Screenplays, and Best Animated Feature). So let's begin!)

1 – MELHOR FILME (BEST PICTURE)

QUEM IRÁ GANHAR: TRÊS ANÚNCIOS PARA UM CRIME
(WHO WILL WIN: THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI)
(This was one of the first pre-Oscar films I've seen, and I've had a certain expectation for it. I hoped it was more like a Coen Brothers movie, not because it just had the amazing Frances McDormand in the cast, along with an incredible supporting cast (Woody Harrelson, Sam Rockwell, Peter Dinklage and Lucas Hedges). It's a not Tarantinesque revenge movie. It has the right amount of gore, dark humor and violence. The dialogues and scenes are flawless. However, this film has only one flaw, in my opinion: the ending is way too ambiguous, it was the most ambiguous ending since The Lobster, from 2015. Since the Golden Globes, where it won the Best Picture – Drama award, I was more trustworthy that Martin McDonagh's acclaimed work will win the Best Picture Award in this year's Oscars. 9,5 out of 10.)

QUEM EU QUERIA QUE GANHASSE: A FORMA DA ÁGUA
(WHO I WISH IT COULD WIN: THE SHAPE OF WATER)

(Just for starters, Guillermo del Toro is one of my favorite directors. And with his new work, he made a love letter to cinema and diversity, like it was a mix between La La Land and Moonlight's respective love letters. A fairy tale with, in the point of view of the society in the time portrayed in the film, imperfect main characters, del Toro focuses and gives light and voice to these minorities, and almost all the main actors in the film got nominated for an Oscar for brilliantly portraying this small part of society, which wins more amounts of voice as time goes by. I am really happy that finally del Toro is getting the recognition he deserves since Pan's Labyrinth, as he won the Golden Lion in Venice because of his new work. One of the best movies I've seen on the big screen in these times, and one of the best films of all time for me (yeah, really), “The Shape of Water” is the film the Oscars need to award in troubled times like these. 10 out of 10.)

“The Shape of Water” is a 2017 American dark fantasy romance film directed by Guillermo del Toro and written by Guillermo del Toro and Vanessa Taylor. It stars Sally Hawkins, Doug Jones, Richard Jenkins, Octavia Spencer, Michael Shannon and Michael Stuhlbarg. The film is based on an idea created by Guillermo del Toro and Daniel Kraus.

Just for starters, I've been waiting for this movie for a very long time. Like, a very long time. I accompanied every festival it was shown, and every review, good or bad, it has received. After the Brazilian release date got delayed from January 11 to February 1, I finally could watch the final results of the film. And I must say Guillermo del Toro made another masterpiece in his most recent work. The script led by del Toro and Vanessa Taylor combined with the cinematography, the sets, the original score, the performances by its wonderful cast and the different shades of green present in the film give birth to the best movie of 2017 and, in my opinion, Guillermo del Toro's best work since the spectacular Pan's Labyrinth, from 2006. It is simply fantastic what the Mexican director can achieve here. He brings a film that mixes a lot of genres, including espionage, romance, science fiction, drama, some touches of comedy, and even musicals, going way beyond a love story between different species. Sally Hawkins is marvelous in her performance as Elisa, delivering several emotions with only facial expressions, which pushes her against Frances McDormand in the battle for the Oscar for Best Actress. Doug Jones, as always, doing partnerships with del Toro in roles that require heavy make-up, is fantastical as the Amphibian Man, in a performance which could have been Oscar-nominated. The Oscar-nominated supporting actors Richard Jenkins and Octavia Spencer have wonderful performances as people who are part of minority groups who suffered a lot of prejudice in the time the movie is set (and these groups still do). Michael Shannon is the new Captain Vidal, threatening and sadistic, a really great villain. In visual and technical aspects, the film is flawless. The cinematography is beautiful, the award-winning original score by Alexandre Desplat is magical, and the production design is realistic and very well made. And I feel very safe to say that there isn't one moment in the 2 hours and 3 minutes in this film that it feels slow and dragged in rythym, it's the complete opposite, when the spectators sit in their seats, their attention is fully concentrated in the film until it, which goes quicker than a sigh, ends. And it feels very lovely. The feeling is so beautiful I finished it applauding with a very big smile on my face, after a very gratifying experience of true cinema.
Being an adult, violent, sensual, and made-for-the-big-screen film, the 13 Oscar-nominated (including Best Picture and Director – Guillermo del Toro) “The Shape of Water” is del Toro's love letter to movies, monsters, diversity, and love, which will certainly leave all the people who watch it wonderstruck.
I loved this film so much! I totally recommend it to the fans of the director's work!! I give it a 10 out of 10!
