(And don't forget to like the blog's Facebook page:)

(What's up, film buffs! I'm back, with the review of the excellent third episode of the eleventh season of Doctor Who, which can return to the show's educational roots, titled “Rosa”! Let's go!)

(After several attempts to return to Sheffield, the Doctor (Jodie Whittaker), Yaz (Mandip Gill), Ryan (Tosin Cole), and Graham (Bradley Walsh) find themselves in 1955, in the state of Alabama, as they investigate an unknown source of alien energy, which leads to Rosa Parks (Vinette Robinson), a black seamstress.)

(Segregationist America, for me, is one of the best and most interesting themes to work on in the movies, as it has the capacity to move and aware the public. An example of a movie in this style is the acclaimed “The Help”, released in 2011. And when I knew that the new season of Doctor Who would include an episode set in the segregation times in the US, with Rosa Parks, a symbol of the American black movement, who was arrested for refusing a bus seat to white people, as one of the central characters, I immediately got excited. And the episode managed to attend all my expectations. The script, written by debut screenwriter Malorie Blackman, who is known for writing books set in segregational dystopias, and by Chris Chibnall, the show's showrunner, is an example of one of those Doctor Who episodes that find a way to tell an event in History in an entertaining way, with light aspects of sci-fi inserted in it. There were certain moments in this episode that made me forget, for a few instants, that I was watching a sci-fi show with aliens and time travel. And because of that, I consider it to be the best episode of the season so far, for keeping History as a main plot and putting sci-fi as a background.)

(The performances continue to be very good. Jodie Whittaker keeps on having energy and charisma to spare, as well as a lot of courage, as the Doctor, revigorating the character. Bradley Walsh keeps on being my favorite of the three companions as Graham, serving once again as a comic relief, bringing necessary humor into a predominantly serious script. Tosin Cole and Mandip Gill have a deeper development in this episode as Ryan and Yaz, in a specific scene where the two discuss about prejudice, and I am really rooting for these two to end up together by the end of the season. But who really shines in this episode is guest actress Vinette Robinson as Rosa Parks. She nails the accent, Rosa's voice, and her performance is, probably, the best portrayal of an historical figure in the show since Tony Curran as Van Gogh in “Vincent and the Doctor”, it's really amazing.)

(The visuals and art direction capture the essence of the 1950s with perfection, and I always love when some cinematography work, combined with art direction and production design, manage to re-create a determined time. The clothes, the habits, the sets, it's all really beautiful. Once more, this eleventh season proving itself to be one of the most visually attractive seasons in the show's history, with cinematic visuals and top-notch special effects.)

(I usually don't deepen much on these reviews, but there's one particular scene I have to discuss here, so here goes a SPOILER alert!)

(The bus scene, set in December 1st, 1955, is simply phenomenal. The moment in which Rosa Parks chooses to sit on the bus and the driver threatens to arrest her and she simply says “You may do that” gave me the will to give it a standing ovation. It was a moment recreated with the most minimal details. The reactions from the Doctor and her companions by seeing Rosa being taken, unable to do anything to help her, are heartbreaking, especially Graham's, who was standing, and was one of the white people for which Rosa, by law, should've vacated the bus seat. And the use of the song “Rise Up”, by Andra Day, made everything even more emotional and symbolic, because Rosa did exactly the opposite of the song's title, and this simple, courageous gesture sparked the rise of the black movement's actions to do something about it. It is the best use of a modern song in Doctor Who since the use of “Chances”, by Athlete, in the heart-wrenching finale of “Vincent and the Doctor”, that's a fact.)

Acabaram os SPOILERS.
(SPOILERS over.)

(And don't forget to like the blog's Facebook page:)

(What's up, film buffs! I'm back, and I come here with a review of one of the most emotionally charged musicals in recent times! It is the third remake of a story firstly told in 1937, but it remains relevant in these days. As actor Bradley Cooper's directing debut, and Lady Gaga's first main role in a Hollywood movie, let's talk about the 2018 version of “A Star is Born”! Let's go!)

(The movie tells the story of two artists: Jackson Maine (Bradley Cooper), a famous, renowned singer in the music market, and Ally (Lady Gaga), a waitress who's a wannabe singer. One day, Jackson watches Ally performing and ends up enchanted by her talent. He offers her help by letting her participate in one of his concerts as a special guest, and the two end up falling in love. After their performance, Ally's career takes off, while Jackson's finds difficulties along the way.)

(When I first heard of this movie, I thought it was an original film which told Lady Gaga's trajectory as an artist. Then, I saw it was a remake of an old movie, which already had two remakes. Before seeing this version, I saw the 1954 one, with Judy Garland and James Mason in the main roles. It was quite long, but I loved it. In September, the first song in the soundtrack was released (“Shallow”), and I instantly became a fan. I was pretty excited to see this movie, and it's with a smile on my face that I tell you that this is, for me, the best movie of the year so far. As it is a musical, let's analyze it by parts: the plot, the performances, the technical qualities, and of course, the soundtrack.)

(The plot is already known, and the same thing happens here as it did in the 1954 version, only this time, it's focused on the world of music (the 1954 one is focused on showbiz and acting). And for me, there's no better type of musical than a musical about musicians, because the songs get a double meaning in this kind of film: they are both a different way to express one's feelings and what the main characters do for a living. And we can see that in Cooper and Gaga's characters, who give their bodies and souls to the songs they write and perform to the great public. The script, co-written by Bradley Cooper, Eric Roth and Will Fetters, can be emotionally charged, moving, and funny in the right dose, which can lead the film to be nominated for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay in next year's Oscars.)

(On the way to the performances, we have here Bradley Cooper's best performance since his Oscar-nominated role in “Silver Linings Playbook”, and he'll, probably, be nominated for this one as well with justice. He manages to portray a musician whose career is falling down the hill with real honesty and realism, besides, the guy can really sing and play, being a quadruple threat (director, writer, producer and actor) in next year's award shows. Who also comes on strong as one of the main contenders for Best Actress is Lady Gaga, who here, is far from being the highly theatrical artist from times of “Bad Romance” and “Paparazzi”. We have here a more raw, honest, believable, realistic Lady Gaga, and that's her best side for me. The only one who can beat her way to the award is Olivia Colman, who, because of her acclaimed performance in “The Favourite”, has been being praised by everyone. But in one way (Actress) or another (Original Song), she will get an Oscar for this movie. One important thing in the “A Star is Born” movies is the chemistry between the main characters, which went perfectly well between Cooper and Gaga. The two work absurdly well together, unlike the 1976 version, with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson, criticized for the lack of spark in the pair's chemistry. Others who are very well here are Sam Elliott and Dave Chappelle, who give an operating “paternal figure” to Cooper's character.)

(On the technical qualities, three things are noticed here: the direction, the editing and the cinematography. As Bradley Cooper's directing debut, I never expected he would do so well, headlining the contenders for Best Director in next year's award shows, in my opinion. The editing is very agile and fast-paced, which is primordial in a musical, and the cinematography is flawless. The three aspects combined make the movie a completely immersive experience for the audience, which is very nice, as we feel like watching a concert of the main characters while they're singing. I can already predict a handful of technical awards for this movie!)

(And at last, but not least, what makes a musical a musical, the soundtrack. Composed almost entirely by original songs written by Gaga and Cooper, the soundtrack becomes an active character in the film, thrilling the audience and giving them the will to sing it out loud in the middle of the theater. To me, the acoustic-ish songs, like “Shallow”, “Maybe It's Time” and “Always Remember Us This Way”, work better than the pop-ish songs, but that's on each person's taste in music. These three songs have high chances of being nominated and, maybe, even win the Best Original Song awards in 2019. They are effective, emotional, catchy and gorgeous. If “La La Land” scooped up the original score and song awards in 2017, next year it'll be this movie's turn to do it. And with justice, because this soundtrack is highly addictive.)

(In a nutshell, the 2018 version of “A Star is Born” is a highly emotional, realistic, sonorously thrilling immersive experience, that extracts the best out of its main actors, and marks a promising start for Bradley Cooper in directing and Lady Gaga in acting. Oh, and it's also the best movie of the year so far.

I give it a 10 out of 10!!

That's it, guys! I hope you liked it! See you next time,

(And don't forget to like the blog's Facebook page:)

(What's up, film buffs! João Pedro here, and last week, I posted a poll in my blog's Facebook page if you, the readers, would like me to review the following episodes of the eleventh season of Doctor Who. The response was an unanimous “yes”, so here is the review of the second episode of the show's new era, titled “The Ghost Monument”. Let's go!)

(The episode starts right where the first one ended, and follows the Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) and her friends Yaz (Mandip Gill), Ryan (Tosin Cole) and Graham (Bradley Walsh) in a race against time in a deserted planet to find the missing TARDIS, and they find themselves in a rally competed between two intergalactic pilots (Susan Lynch and Shaun Dooley), who have the objective to find the “ghost monument”.)

(After a primarily introductory episode, “The Ghost Monument” goes straight to the action, with a precise, to-the-point script written by Chris Chibnall, who is the show's current showrunner, which can already bring some recent references to the previous episode, and introduce intriguing new concepts, which can serve as the mystery that will be developed through the season and solved in its conclusion (something similar happened with “the Hybrid” in the show's ninth season). The script has a certain dose of everything that makes Doctor Who a good show: family-adequate humor, tense and thrilling moments, and epic battle scenes, and that shows why Chris Chibnall, who has written so little for the show so far, is the right person to guide the new era of this iconic TV program.)

(The performances keep on being very good. Jodie Whittaker continues to bring energy, charisma and confidence in her version of the Doctor. The connection between Ryan (Tosin Cole) and Graham (Bradley Walsh) is one of the best aspects in this season's plot. Due to what happened on the previous episode, the scripts should give the needed time to evolve that connection, so that, by the end of the season, there might be a thrilling, emotional conclusion to it. The chemistry between the Doctor and her companions is also excellent, it seems that they are already close friends in this second episode, and that is another really good thing about the plot, the fact in which the Doctor treats his (or her) companions as friends, something I've rarely seen in previous seasons. The guest actors, even with little screen time, have the potential to create sympathy with the viewers and make those people care about them, and that, even if it's the only episode in which they show up, is very welcome.)

(The visuals keep on being awesome. One curiosity about it is that this particular episode was filmed in South Africa, counting with several breathtaking scenarios, resulting in one of the best cinematography works in the series so far. The same thing can be said about the visual effects, which are levels above previous seasons' special effects. The cinematic visuals of the season, which uses anamorphic lenses in its cameras, combined with the first-class visual effects make this season look like a 10-hour epic sci-fi film. If they keep this quality throughout the season, this is definitely the show's most visually beautiful season so far.)

  1. A abertura (e a música-tema): Precisa e curta, essa nova abertura faz uso de efeitos especiais para criar uma certa nostalgia à série clássica, o que também pode ser dito sobre a música-tema composta por Segun Akinola, que consegue reinventar a icônica melodia atual, mas mesmo assim contando com sons que marcaram a abertura da série clássica. Tanto a abertura quanto a música-tema ficaram excelentes;
(Two iconic things about the show made their triumphant return in this episode:
  1. The opening sequence (and the theme song): precise and short, this new opening sequence makes use of visual effects to create a certain nostalgia to the classic series, which can also be said about the theme song composed by Segun Akinola, who can reinvent the iconic current melody adding sounds that marked the opening sequence of the classic series. Both things were excellent;
  2. The TARDIS: I have to confess, when I heard the TARDIS materializing, I almost screamed of excitement. The iconic police box has changed, inside and outside. For both aspects, I must congratulate the production design team, because they reinvented the time machine by adding several new stuff and at the same time, evoking some nostalgia to the David Tennant era. If I can confirm anything, it's this: this TARDIS is gorgeous!!)

(Precise and nostalgic, “The Ghost Monument” marks the return of an old friend and the beginning of a new mystery, while showing everything that makes Doctor Who a great show!

I give it a 9,0 out of 10!!

That's it, guys!! I hope you liked it!! See you next time,

(And don't forget to like the blog's Facebook page:)

(What's up, film buffs!! João Pedro here, and I have come to speak about a film franchise that surprised me. I went to see it with no expectations at all and I ended up surprised by its technical and narrative quality. It's a children's franchise, but it will surely conquest the hearts of several adults with its visuals and charm. My friends, this is probably the best children's franchise in recent times. Let's talk about the “Paddington” franchise, based on the books by Michael Bond. Let's go!!)

(So, the good thing about the “Paddington” franchise is that its movies don't have a precise sense of continuity, in a way that it's not 100% necessary to see the first movie to understand the second one. The necessary is to understand the basis: Paddington (voiced brilliantly by Ben Whishaw) is a marmalade-loving bear that traveled from Peru to London in the search for a home, after a natural disaster destroys his own home. He finds comfort with the Browns, a family of humans which, in the midst of several conflicts, learns to enjoy the little bear's company. But the best thing is to really see both movies back-to-back, because, apart from both being very good movies, there are important parts, which aren't part of the basis, for the development of the title character.)

(The narrative of the first film, at least, is very predictable. You feel like you have already seen that plot somewhere. To the kids, that goes unnoticed, but for the film buffs, like you and me, it is a little noticeable. But what stops the film from being completely derivative is the way of telling that story. Instead of a human, we have a bear looking for a home. And, along with the Browns, the neighbors and all the people that Paddington gets to meet treat him like an ordinary human being, even though he's from a completely different species. And that gets really funny in some parts of the film. Before watching it, I only felt attracted to it because Peter Capaldi (who played the Twelfth Doctor in Doctor Who) was in it, but after watching it, I saw that there's a lot of stuff to like there. The cast, which includes Hugh Bonneville (from Downton Abbey), Sally Hawkins (from The Shape of Water), Julie Walters (from Harry Potter and Mamma Mia), Nicole Kidman, and it goes further; the visuals, which are very colorful and vibrant; the camerawork, which is very symmetric, and it made me think that this movie would do very well if it had been directed by Wes Anderson; and the sense of humor, that keeps the kids entertained and at the same time, hides some inside jokes for the grown-ups.)

(And all that was in 2014. 3 years later, comes “Paddington 2”, with the return of director-screenwriter Paul King, and the entire main cast of the original film, which, let's say it, it's always a good thing. If the cast of the first film wasn't heavy enough, the second film adds Hugh Grant and Brendan Gleeson to the cast, two very heavy names on the British movie market. And the film repeats most of the formula that made the first film so good. And, unlike most times that is made on movie franchises, it worked perfectly. It's not as predictable as the plot from the first film, but it recycles some jokes that marked its humor, and references like that are always welcome. The whole cast is good, each one has their moment to shine, but the real scene stealer here is Hugh Grant, who is really funny as a decadent actor who is forced to work for ads on dog food. The film again has rapturous visuals, with a strong use of pastel colours (another reference to Wes Anderson's style), it has a perfect symmetry on the camerawork, and the sense of humor is as attractive to kids as it is to adults, and that is always good. Speaking for real, “Paddington 2” is the best movie I've seen in 2018 so far, and that's not kidding, it's because it's really, really good.)

(In a nutshell, the “Paddington” franchise has two fantastic, visually attractive films, with extremely talented casts, which are capable to warm the hearts of children and adults, boosted by Ben Whishaw's amazingly cute voice performance as the title character, which fits him perfectly. I can't wait for the future of this promising franchise!!

I give it a 10 out of 10!!

That's it, guys!! I hope you liked it!! See you next time,

(And don't forget to like the blog's Facebook page:)

(What's up, film buffs!! João Pedro is here, and who really knows me knows that I simply love the British sci-fi TV show Doctor Who, which tells the story of a time-traveling alien known as the Doctor, who travels through space and time in a spaceship (which is also a time machine) disguised as a police telephone box, solving problems in all sorts of places. I've already made some episode reviews here, and I intend to make a special post in the series' 55th anniversary next month, but now, I'd like to concentrate on the premiere episode of the eleventh season, which brings Jodie Whittaker as the thirteenth incarnation of the title character, and the first female Doctor in the series, titled “The Woman Who Fell to Earth”. Let's go!!)

(The episode introduces 3 companions: Ryan (Tosin Cole), a young man who suffers from dyspraxia, Yaz (Mandip Gill), a police officer in training, and Graham (Bradley Walsh), a former bus driver, and they are joined together by a mysterious train accident. Suddenly, they witness a woman (Jodie Whittaker) fall from the train's ceiling, who can't remember her name. Together, they will figure out what (or who) caused the accident.)

(The new showrunner, Chris Chibnall, between several other things, promised to make this season a starting point for new viewers to start following the show. And that, he did perfectly. Chibnall's script is simple, yet not perfect. At contrast with some of the scripts written by Steven Moffat, which sometimes required knowledge from previous episodes and seasons, Chibnall does not use flashbacks and makes one or two references to the Twelfth Doctor, portrayed by Peter Capaldi. Honestly, I, as a fan of the show, missed one or two moments that reference to previous episodes, or even a brief cameo from some character from the Capaldi era. But I get the reason of why Chibnall did it and I completely respect his point of view. As everything he does, he leaves us with a tense cliffhanger to lead the viewer to want to see what will happen in the following episode. Those who have seen Broadchurch will know what I'm talking about. The only thing I have to complain about the script is that the development of the villains, which are new ones, stayed on the surface. It was one of the only things in the entire episode which I felt it was out of place. It's a shame, but as it's to build an introductory character to new viewers, I see why.)

(I have to admit, I had my doubts if a woman would work in a role which was always portrayed by men. I watched a good part of Whittaker's filmography before the premiere episode, including the entire series of Broadchurch, Attack the Block, and the great Adult Life Skills, and she is a fantastic actress. And she simply shines as the show's first female Doctor. She has an energy very similar to David Tennant's and Matt Smith's energies, a quirky sense of humor, and a heavy accent, like Peter Capaldi's. The moment when she says “I'm the Doctor”, like in every episode that introduces a new Doctor, is epic. So epic that everyone in the movie theater screening I was at applauded the moment, including me. The people who stopped watching the show because of the simple fact that the title character is now a woman (Doctor could be male and female, as a title) do not know what they're missing. The companions also work very well: Mandip Gill brings out an extra piece of girl power to the show, Bradley Walsh is the comic relief of the 3, and Tosin Cole has an extremely emotional arc in this premiere episode. In the acting part, this cast simply nails it!!)

(Something that has improved greatly comparing to previous seasons is the visuals of the show. The screen format has changed, along with the type of lens they use in the cameras, to give a more cinematic tone to the show, and that's always good; the special effects evolved drastically, due to the fact that Double Negative, the visual effects company responsible for, probably, almost every blockbuster out there, including Best Special Effects Oscar-winner “Blade Runner 2049”, which is visually stunning, is now in VFX duty for the show; and the fact that every episode is a contained story makes each episode a 50-minute mini-movie, and that's welcome, after several seasons with double season premieres and finales. I'm not complaining about the double episodes, but this new method helps to a much easier understanding of the episode as a whole, and that's really good.)

Resumindo, “The Woman Who Fell to Earth” não é um episódio perfeito, mas é uma boa introdução da 13a Doutora para os fãs, assim como é uma ótima introdução da série como um todo para uma nova geração de espectadores.

Nota: 9,0 de 10!!

É isso, pessoal! Espero que tenham gostado!! Até a próxima,
João Pedro

(In a nutshell, “The Woman Who Fell to Earth” is not a perfect episode, but it is a good introduction of the 13th Doctor to the fans, as it is a great introduction of the series as a whole to a new generation of viewers.

I give it a 9,0 out of 10!!

That's it, guys!! Hope you liked it!! See you next time,

(And don't forget to like the blog's Facebook page:)

Criada por Carol Black e Neal Marlens, me acompanhem na resenha da inesquecível série “Anos Incríveis” (The Wonder Years, no original). Vamos lá!
(What's up, film buffs!! I took a bit longer than expected, but I'm back! And I come here with the review of a TV show I recently finished. It's a coming of age journey of a boy who lives in the suburbs of the US. It was highly acclaimed when it was shown on TV, and it is still remembered as one of the biggest phenomenons on American television. Created by Carol Black and Neal Marlens, follow me in the review of the unforgettable TV show “The Wonder Years”. Let's go!)

(In case you guys don't know, “The Wonder Years” was shown between 1988 and 1993, is set between 1968 and 1973, and tells the story of Kevin Arnold (Fred Savage), who is also the narrator of the show, in his older version (Daniel Stern, Marv from “Home Alone”), a kid who lives a normal life, with his friends Paul Pfeiffer (Josh Saviano) and Winnie Cooper (Danica McKellar), and his family: father, Jack (Dan Lauria), mother, Norma (Alley Mills), middle brother, Wayne (Jason Hervey) and older sister, Karen (Olivia d'Abo), but at the same time, he lives through extraordinary moments that change history, like the Beatles rising in the US, the Vietnam War and Neil Armstrong's landing on the Moon.)

(This show, as many of the great ideas that popped into my head, was recommended to me by my father, and I confess I was doubtful into starting it, but now I recognize I was severely mistaken. “The Wonder Years” is, indeed, wonderful. The setting is perfect, the actors, young and adult, are fantastic, the plot suprises us each season, giving us several gut-punches right in the feelings at each season finale. Of course, essentially, “The Wonder Years” is a comedy, but not every comedy goes without some drama here and there. There are moments that “The Wonder Years” is really, really sad. I even cried in some episodes and felt bad for the characters, just so you can understand how powerful the sentimentalism of the series is. Besides sentimental, “The Wonder Years” is also incredibly realistic. So realistic that it seems that we're there, living that moment with Kevin, as if the spectator is a part of that lead character's extraordinary life, and that's pretty genius.)

(The aspect that most impressed me about The Wonder Years was the fact of the number of seasons is the same number of years in which this show is set, as if each season is one year of Kevin's life. And we see a lot of things happen in these 6 years, amongst them his first kiss, him trying out his driver's license, doing his SATs, going to school dances and prom, working half-time to get himself some money, and it goes further. And I strongly congratulate Fred Savage, that makes all these moments seem real with gusto in his performance as Kevin Arnold. The parents, played by Dan Lauria and Alley Mills, are by far the show's best characters. They are wise, sometimes strict, and always give wise and honest advice to their children, because above all things, they care about them, and our feelings are deeply hurt when the kids disagree with the parents' affirmations or questions. And even if the show is about the children, we can't help but feel a little sorry for the parents. And that feeling is what makes “The Wonder Years” one of the most emotionally effective TV shows I've ever seen.)

(Other aspects in which the show stands out are the use of flashbacks of early seasons in later seasons, and the soundtrack. Sometimes, both are combined, and there's a particular flashback in which I almost exploded of how freaking cute it is. It was used in a recent season, and in it, the actors are really young, and in the background, “We've Got Tonight”, by Bob Seger, plays. Besides Seger, several other artists from that time get their songs played here: the Beatles (who wrote the theme song to the show), Lesley Gore, John Lennon, Carole King, Van Morrison, Joe Cocker, Buffalo Springfield, and it goes further. In the soundtrack area, The Wonder Years is phenomenal, there's no doubt about it. Now, the flashbacks are used in a very effective way in these final seasons to evoke some kind of nostalgia for the early seasons, and the way that it really works is one of my favorite things about the show, which is, essentially, older Kevin having an overdose of nostalgia for his younger years, and that's really cool.)

(In a nutshell, “The Wonder Years” is an epic coming of age saga, counting with meticulously refined stereotypes, an explosive, nostalgic soundtrack, memorable performances by its cast, and it is loaded with emotional moments. It may be from 30 years ago, but it doesn't mean that it's not worth your precious time. Everyone deserves, at least once in a lifetime, to see Kevin Arnold's extraordinary life, and that is a fact.

I give it a 10 out of 10!!

That's it, guys!! I hope you liked it!! Sorry it took so long! See you next time,
João Pedro)
