cinéfilos! Aqui quem fala é o João Pedro, e semana passada, eu
postei uma enquete na página do Facebook do meu blog se vocês, os
leitores, queriam que eu fizesse resenhas dos episódios subsequentes
da décima-primeira temporada de Doctor Who. A resposta foi um
unânime “sim”, então aqui vai a resenha do segundo episódio da
nova era da série, intitulado “The Ghost Monument” (O Monumento
Fantasma). Vamos lá!
(What's up, film buffs!
João Pedro here, and last week, I posted a poll in my blog's
Facebook page if you, the readers, would like me to review the
following episodes of the eleventh season of Doctor Who. The response
was an unanimous “yes”, so here is the review of the second
episode of the show's new era, titled “The Ghost Monument”. Let's
go!)
O episódio começa
exatamente onde o primeiro terminou, e acompanha a Doutora (Jodie
Whittaker) e seus amigos Yaz (Mandip Gill), Ryan (Tosin Cole) e
Graham (Bradley Walsh) em uma corrida contra o tempo em um planeta
desolado para achar a TARDIS desaparecida, e eles se encontram em um
rali competido entre dois pilotos intergalácticos (Susan Lynch e
Shaun Dooley), que possuem o objetivo de achar o “monumento
fantasma”.
(The episode starts
right where the first one ended, and follows the Doctor (Jodie
Whittaker) and her friends Yaz (Mandip Gill), Ryan (Tosin Cole) and
Graham (Bradley Walsh) in a race against time in a deserted planet to
find the missing TARDIS, and they find themselves in a rally competed
between two intergalactic pilots (Susan Lynch and Shaun Dooley), who
have the objective to find the “ghost monument”.)
Depois de um primeiro
episódio prioritariamente introdutório, “The Ghost Monument” já
parte para a ação, com um roteiro preciso e que vai direto ao ponto
escrito por Chris Chibnall, showrunner da série, que consegue já
trazer referências recentes ao episódio anterior, e introduzir
intrigantes conceitos novos, que poderão servir como o mistério que
será desenvolvido ao longo da temporada e resolvidos no final dela
(algo parecido aconteceu com “o Híbrido” na nona temporada do
programa). O roteiro possui uma dose certa de tudo o que faz Doctor
Who uma série boa: humor adequado para toda a família, momentos
tensos, emocionantes, e cenas épicas de batalha, e isso mostra
porque Chris Chibnall, mesmo tendo escrito pouco até agora para a
série, é a pessoa certa para guiar essa nova era desse programa
icônico.
(After a primarily
introductory episode, “The Ghost Monument” goes straight to the
action, with a precise, to-the-point script written by Chris
Chibnall, who is the show's current showrunner, which can already
bring some recent references to the previous episode, and introduce
intriguing new concepts, which can serve as the mystery that will be
developed through the season and solved in its conclusion (something
similar happened with “the Hybrid” in the show's ninth season).
The script has a certain dose of everything that makes Doctor Who a
good show: family-adequate humor, tense and thrilling moments, and
epic battle scenes, and that shows why Chris Chibnall, who has
written so little for the show so far, is the right person to guide
the new era of this iconic TV program.)
As atuações continuam
sendo muito boas. Jodie Whittaker continua esbanjando energia,
carisma e confiança em sua versão do Doutor. A dinâmica entre Ryan
(Tosin Cole) e Graham (Bradley Walsh) é um dos melhores aspectos no
enredo dessa temporada. Devido aos acontecimentos do episódio
anterior, os roteiros devem dar um tempo necessário para desenvolver
essa dinâmica para que, no final dessa temporada, possa ter uma
conclusão emocionante. A química entre a Doutora e seus
acompanhantes também é excelente, parece até que eles já são
amigos do peito nesse segundo episódio, e essa é outra coisa muito
boa do enredo, o fato do Doutor tratar seus acompanhantes como
amigos, algo que raramente vi nas temporadas anteriores. Os atores
convidados, mesmo com pouco tempo de tela, têm o potencial de criar
simpatia com os espectadores e fazer com que os mesmos se importem
com eles, e isso, mesmo que seja o único episódio em que eles
apareçam, é muito bem-vindo.
(The performances keep
on being very good. Jodie Whittaker continues to bring energy,
charisma and confidence in her version of the Doctor. The connection
between Ryan (Tosin Cole) and Graham (Bradley Walsh) is one of the
best aspects in this season's plot. Due to what happened on the
previous episode, the scripts should give the needed time to evolve
that connection, so that, by the end of the season, there might be a
thrilling, emotional conclusion to it. The chemistry between the
Doctor and her companions is also excellent, it seems that they are
already close friends in this second episode, and that is another
really good thing about the plot, the fact in which the Doctor treats
his (or her) companions as friends, something I've rarely seen in
previous seasons. The guest actors, even with little screen time,
have the potential to create sympathy with the viewers and make those
people care about them, and that, even if it's the only episode in
which they show up, is very welcome.)
O visual continua sendo
incrível. Uma curiosidade é que esse episódio em particular foi
gravado na África do Sul, contando com vários cenários de tirar o
fôlego, resultando em um dos melhores trabalhos de fotografia da
série até agora. A mesma coisa sobre os efeitos especiais, que
estão níveis acima dos efeitos de temporadas anteriores. O visual
cinematográfico da temporada, que faz uso de lentes anamórficas nas
câmeras, combinado com os efeitos visuais de primeira classe fazem
essa temporada parecer um filme de sci-fi épico de 10 horas de
duração. Se essa qualidade for mantida pelo restante da temporada,
essa é definitivamente a temporada mais visualmente bela do programa
até agora.
(The visuals keep on
being awesome. One curiosity about it is that this particular episode
was filmed in South Africa, counting with several breathtaking
scenarios, resulting in one of the best cinematography works in the
series so far. The same thing can be said about the visual effects,
which are levels above previous seasons' special effects. The
cinematic visuals of the season, which uses anamorphic lenses in its
cameras, combined with the first-class visual effects make this
season look like a 10-hour epic sci-fi film. If they keep this
quality throughout the season, this is definitely the show's most
visually beautiful season so far.)
Duas coisas icônicas
para o programa fizeram seu retorno triunfal nesse episódio:
- A abertura (e a música-tema): Precisa e curta, essa nova abertura faz uso de efeitos especiais para criar uma certa nostalgia à série clássica, o que também pode ser dito sobre a música-tema composta por Segun Akinola, que consegue reinventar a icônica melodia atual, mas mesmo assim contando com sons que marcaram a abertura da série clássica. Tanto a abertura quanto a música-tema ficaram excelentes;
- A TARDIS: Eu tenho que confessar, quando eu ouvi o barulhinho da TARDIS se materializando, eu quase gritei de tanta animação. A icônica cabine policial mudou, tanto internamente quanto externamente. Para tanto um aspecto quanto o outro, devo parabenizar a equipe de direção de arte, pois ela conseguiu reinventar a máquina do tempo, adicionando várias coisas novas e ao mesmo tempo, evocando uma nostalgia aos tempos de David Tennant. Se eu posso confirmar uma coisa, é que essa TARDIS ficou linda!!
(Two iconic things
about the show made their triumphant return in this episode:
- The opening sequence (and the theme song): precise and short, this new opening sequence makes use of visual effects to create a certain nostalgia to the classic series, which can also be said about the theme song composed by Segun Akinola, who can reinvent the iconic current melody adding sounds that marked the opening sequence of the classic series. Both things were excellent;
- The TARDIS: I have to confess, when I heard the TARDIS materializing, I almost screamed of excitement. The iconic police box has changed, inside and outside. For both aspects, I must congratulate the production design team, because they reinvented the time machine by adding several new stuff and at the same time, evoking some nostalgia to the David Tennant era. If I can confirm anything, it's this: this TARDIS is gorgeous!!)

“The Ghost Monument” marca o retorno de uma velha amiga e o
início de um novo mistério, enquanto mostra tudo o que faz de
Doctor Who uma série ótima!
