cinéfilos! Aqui quem fala é o João Pedro, e venho aqui com a
resenha do filme que eu considero ser o melhor musical de todos os
tempos! Não é pra todo mundo, tem estilo de sobra, é uma homenagem
aos filmes B de ficção-científica e terror dos anos 40 e 50, tem
uma trilha sonora incrivelmente viciante e conta com uma performance
inesquecível do maravilhoso Tim Curry no papel principal. Vamos
falar sobre o estranho e absurdamente divertido “The Rocky Horror
Picture Show”! Vamos lá!
(What's up, film buffs!
I'm back, with the review of what I consider to be the best movie
musical of all time! It's not for everyone, it has huge amounts of
style, it is an homage to sci-fi and horror B movies from the 40s and
50s, it has an incredibly addictive soundtrack and it counts with an
unforgettable performance by the wonderful Tim Curry in the main
role. Let's talk about the weird and absurdly fun “The Rocky Horror
Picture Show”! Let's go!)
O filme conta com um
dos enredos mais absurdos que eu já vi: um casal recém-noivo (Barry
Bostwick e Susan Sarandon) se vê perdido no meio de um temporal com
um carro defeituoso, e eles encontram refúgio no castelo de um
cientista maluco, o Dr. Frank-N-Furter (Tim Curry), um alienígena
transsexual que vem construindo um experimento peculiar: um homem
loiro musculoso (Peter Hinwood), no melhor estilo Frankenstein.
(The film has one of
the most absurd plots I've ever seen: a recently engaged couple
(Barry Bostwick and Susan Sarandon) find themselves lost in the
middle of a storm with a malfunctioning car, and they find refuge in
the castle of a mad scientist, Dr. Frank-N-Furter (Tim Curry), a
transexual alien who has been building up a peculiar experiment: a
blonde, muscular man (Peter Hinwood), Frankenstein-style.)
A primeira vez que ouvi
falar de Rocky Horror foi em um episódio temático do musical da
série Glee, da qual eu era fã nas duas primeiras temporadas, mas
como eu era muito novo ainda para ver (o filme é de 18 anos), deixei
quieto. Mas aí, 3 anos depois, veio “As Vantagens de Ser
Invisível”, que contava como plot point uma apresentação de
Rocky Horror feita pelos protagonistas. Gostei bastante das músicas
apresentadas tanto em Glee quanto em “As Vantagens...”, então,
eu vi o filme.
E cara, que filme
esquisito. Mas no bom sentido. Funciona tanto como uma paródia como
uma homenagem aos filmes B citados acima, e tem de tudo um pouco
nesse filme. Tem aventura, comédia, terror, romance, suspense, e
acima de tudo, tem músicas. E é cada uma melhor do que a outra! É
impossível não querer dançar ao som de “Time Warp” ou “Hot
Patootie”, ou cantar junto em “Dammit Janet” ou “Science
Fiction Double Feature”, a trilha sonora desse filme é
simplesmente irresistível.
(The first time I heard
about Rocky Horror was because of a thematic episode of TRHPS in
Glee, and I was a big fan of it during the first two seasons, but as
I was too young to see the film (it's R-rated), I let it be. But
then, 3 years later, “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” came into
the picture, and it has a Rocky Horror performance by the main
characters as a plot point. I really liked the songs performed in
Glee and “Perks”, so I watched the film. And man, what a weird
film. But in a good way. It works as a parody and a homage to the B
movies cited above, and there's a bit of everything in this movie.
There's adventure, comedy, horror, romance, suspense, and above
everything, there are songs. And it's one hit after the other! It's
impossible not wanting to dance to the sound of “Time Warp” or
“Hot Patootie”, or sing along to “Dammit Janet” or “Science
Fiction Double Feature”, the soundtrack for this film is simply
irresistible.)
As interpretações do
elenco são muito boas. Deve-se tomar em conta que a maioria do
elenco desse filme fez parte das montagens da Broadway e do Reino
Unido do musical que deu origem ao filme, chamado Rocky Horror Show,
escrito pelo Richard O'Brien, que aqui faz o papel do mordomo Riff
Raff, além da voz dos lábios em “Science Fiction Double Feature”.
Barry Bostwick e Susan Sarandon (ambos com poucos filmes no currículo
na época desse filme) interpretam os inocentes Brad e Janet com
maestria, contando com diálogos que, às vezes, podem parecer
clichê, mas a química entre os dois é inegável. Patricia Quinn,
Nell Campbell e Richard O'Brien, que aqui interpretam Magenta,
Columbia e Riff Raff, respectivamente, arrasam como os ajudantes do
Dr. Frank-N-Furter, contando com momentos musicais memoráveis, como
a inesquecível e dançante “Time Warp”. Jonathan Adams e Charles
Gray são hilários como o Dr. Everett Scott, um cientista rival, e o
Criminologista, o narrador do filme, e contam com alguns dos momentos
mais engraçados aqui. Mas quem rouba a cena é Tim Curry, que
estreou no cinema com esse filme, como o Dr. Frank-N-Furter, contando
com uma das entradas triunfais mais icônicas do cinema cult, ao som
da hilária “Sweet Transvestite”, e ele expande a capacidade
vocal aqui em “Fanfare/Don't Dream It” e “I'm Going Home”,
ambas sensacionais. No quesito atuações e capacidades vocais do
elenco, The Rocky Horror Picture Show arrasou!
(The cast's
performances are very good. It must be told that most of the film's
cast was a part of the Broadway and West End productions of the
musical that served as a basis to the movie, named The Rocky Horror
Show, written by Richard O'Brien, who plays butler Riff Raff here,
along with voicing the lips in “Science Fiction Double Feature”.
Barry Bostwick and Susan Sarandon (both with very few films in their
curriculum at the time) play the innocent Brad and Janet masterfully,
counting with dialogues that, sometimes, may sound like a cliche, but
the chemistry between the two is undeniable. Patricia Quinn, Nell
Campbell and Richard O'Brien, who here, play Magenta, Columbia and
Riff Raff, respectively, nail it as Dr. Frank-N-Furter's helpers,
counting with memorable musical moments, like the unforgettable and
dance-worthy “Time Warp”. Jonathan Adams and Charles Gray are
hilarious as Dr. Everett Scott, a rival scientist, and the
Criminologist, the film's narrator, and have some of the funniest
moments in the movie. But who steals the scene is Tim Curry, in his
film debut, as Dr. Frank-N-Furter, who has one of the most iconic
triumphant entrances in cult cinema, with the hilarious “Sweet
Transvestite” as a soundtrack, and he expands his vocal abilities
here in “Fanfare/Don't Dream It” and “I'm Going Home”, both
amazing. When we talk about acting and vocal capacities of the cast,
The Rocky Horror Picture Show nailed it!)
O filme só teve US$ 1
milhão de orçamento aproximadamente, e era até razoável comparado
com os filmes que lançaram no mesmo ano, como “Tubarão” (US$ 9
milhões) e “Um Estranho no Ninho” (US$ 3 milhões). Aspectos
técnicos que valem a pena serem notados em Rocky Horror são a
direção de arte, o figurino, a maquiagem e os efeitos especiais. O
castelo do Dr. Frank-N-Furter tem um quê de mansão mal-assombrada,
misturado com laboratório de cientista maluco, e isso funciona muito
bem. O figurino e a maquiagem funcionam muito bem juntos, pois o uso
em grande porte da maquiagem dá um tom de mistério e até ameaça
ao Dr. Frank-N-Furter e seus ajudantes. E os efeitos especiais são
toscos, mas com motivo: como o filme era pra ser uma homenagem aos
filmes B dos anos 40 e 50, os efeitos foram feitos tentando replicar
os efeitos daquela época, e isso eles fizeram com maestria.
(The film only had US$
1 million as a budget approximately, and it was quite reasonable
compared to the movies released on the same year, like “Jaws”
(US$ 9 million) and “One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest” (US$ 3
million). Technical aspects worthy of being noticed in Rocky Horror
are the art direction, the costume design, the makeup and the special
effects. Dr. Frank-N-Furter's castle has a hint of haunted mansion
combined with a mad scientist's lab, and that works out fine. The
costumes and the makeup are great together, as the large use of
makeup gives a tone of mystery and even threat to Dr. Frank-N-Furter
and his helpers. And the special effects are cheesy, but with a
reason: as the movie's supposed to be a homage to the B movies from
the 40s and 50s, the effects were made trying to replicate the
effects in that time, and they've done that masterfully.)
Agora, vamos falar da
obra-prima que é a trilha sonora de The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Abrindo o filme com um par de lábios vermelhos cantando a memorável
“Science Fiction Double Feature”, uma música que faz várias
referências à filmes de monstros e criaturas antigos, nós já nos
sentimos imersos no filme que iremos assistir. Chegando ao castelo,
temos os hits “Time Warp” e “Sweet Transvestite”, que possuem
um tom mais de rock, assim como a irresistível “Hot Patootie”,
que conta com os vocais do cantor de rock Meat Loaf. Todas as
músicas, inclusive as mais lentas, são instantaneamente viciantes,
com o filme se tornando uma ópera de rock com tons de terror e
ficção-científica. Ainda sonho em ver o musical ao vivo, ou o
filme no cinema, para fazer parte da icônica participação da
plateia, que vem perdurando até hoje, com Rocky Horror sendo o filme
mais exibido em cinemas de todos os tempos, mais normalmente na época
do Halloween em sessões da meia-noite, pelas quais o filme ficou
mais famoso. Honestamente, a trilha sonora de The Rocky Horror
Picture Show, pra mim, pode ser uma das melhores trilhas de musicais
de todos os tempos, de tão boa que é!
(Now, let's talk about
the masterpiece that takes form as the soundtrack. Opening the film
with a pair of red lips singing the memorable “Science Fiction
Double Feature”, a song that references several monster and
creature films, we already feel imersed in the movie we're about to
watch. Getting to the castle, we have the hits “Time Warp” and
“Sweet Transvestite”, which possess a rock-ish taste to them,
just like the irresistible “Hot Patootie”, sung by rock singer
Meat Loaf. All the songs, even the slower ones, are instantly
addictive, turning the film into a sci-fi-horror rock opera. I still
dream of seeing the musical live, or watching the film in a theater,
to be a part of the iconic audience participation, which keeps on
coming to this day, with Rocky Horror being the most shown film in
theaters of all time, normally around Halloween in midnight
screenings, for which the film became most famous. Honestly, the
soundtrack to The Rocky Horror Picture Show, for me, may be one of
the best musical soundtracks of all time, because it is so freaking
good!)
Icônico, estranho, e
extremamente divertido, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” conta com
um enredo absurdo, interpretações memoráveis de seu elenco, e uma
trilha sonora que o espectador não tirará da cabeça tão cedo.
(P.S.: Pelo amor de
Deus, não vejam o remake feito pra TV de 2016! Não chega nem perto
da estranheza e do espírito amador dessa obra-prima de 1975.)

extremely fun, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” counts on an
absurd plot, memorable performances by its cast, and a soundtrack
that will stay on its viewers' minds for years to come.
(P.S.: For the love of
all that's sacred, do not watch the 2016 made-for-TV remake! It
doesn't come even close to the weirdness and amateur spirit of this
1975 masterpiece.)
